Whoop. S5 starts

Can't wait - love this and seems s6 is on the cards as well

The new four-part series will adapt four stories from Pater James’s books,

Dead If You Don’t

Dead At First Sight

Need You Dead

Find Them Dead.

John Simm will (thankfully!) return as DS Roy Grace, and we’ll see him deal with cases including a missing teenager, a gang of fraudsters running an online dating (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a63082040/dating-apps-dating-culture/)
agency, as well as themes including drugs, trafficking and judicial blackmail.

Based on the best-selling novels by Peter James, the new four-part instalment will see John Simm return as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, the hard-working police officer who’s given his life to job – and let’s just say he’s got a lot on his plate. A personal tragedy - missing persons, a brutal robbery…it’s going to be quite the series.

The Brighton-set series is based on the bestselling novels by Peter James, with the first ever episode airing in March 2021. John Simm starred in the lead role as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a tenacious detective haunted by the disappearance of his wife some years earlier.

Over the course of four series, he and sidekick Glenn Branson (Richie Campbell) have investigated everything from a missing groom to a vicious robbery and a 30-year-old murder case. It’s safe to say, there’s rarely been a dull moment!

There’s also a lot going on in Roy’s personal life. At the end of series 4, Roy was finally reunited with his long-lost wife, Sandy (Clare Calbraith), and she revealed he had a son named Bruno.

The news came just as Roy was preparing for the arrival of his first child with his new partner Cleo (Zoë Tapper).

In a recent interview, however, John Simm revealed that there’s tragedy in store for the couple.

When we find Cleo and Roy, they are dealing with the loss of a child which has happened between the series," he explained. "So you realise quite quickly what's happened.

They're also trying to deal with Bruno, who's now kind of living with them. They both have to try and bond with Bruno through obviously tragic circumstances, what happened to Sandy, etc in the previous series."

"It’s quite heightened but great to play, you need some dramatic tension. As actors, it's much better to play something like that. It was a lovely challenge, actually."

Zoë Tapper, who plays Cleo, said of the new storyline: "You find out very early on that she's lost the baby, so that's the sort of first image you have of her and of them is dealing with this really devastating loss.

"They were really poignant, moving scenes to film and interesting in another way, because I think for Cleo, her work is so integral to who she is as a person, and she's on bereavement leave at the beginning of this series, and Roy has had to go back to work, so they're separated in their grief as well."

In TV-land, you never have to drive around looking for a parking space. Even in central London!

Cocolapew · 14/04/2025 13:02

No spoilers, I've watched them all and some questions here do get answered.
The rest of the series is really good, I think its been the best yet.

But how did the second woman know the first was wearing a green dress/jacket in time to impersonate her? Was the unit 12 where the computers were tha same as used in previous episode (kidney one?). I grew up locally and get irritated by the flexible geography of the area and unlikely convenient parking spaces! Has anyone tried to park on street in Brighton recently?!

I’m guessing she had been watching him for a few weeks and maybe she always wore her green coat

I haven't seen any previous eps but like a police drama so thought I'd give it a go.

I know we have to suspend belief to some degree but even so it was ludicrous.
Someone manhandled a woman into a hanging and and the only way they worked it out was by the length of the rope? Surely there'd have been signs of a disturbance, defence injures or if she was killed first then wouldn't that have been clear on postmortem? The other chap just quietly forced into an overdose? Or did I miss something.

I can't believe the mild mannered lady in a wheelchair and her boyfriend (?) Were so keen on revenge they cooked up the whole murderous rampage.

Interesting with the theft identity scenes.

The acting is a bit hammy too. Nice scenery though.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/04/2025 17:12

She was drugged

But Ben did not seem that much taller to be able to lift her her up. We missed most of s4 so are lost as far as his ex is concerned. Was the medical disciplinary related to her death or someone else.

Has there been a dna test to confirm Bruno is Graces son? I can’t remember the end of the last series. Did Cassian have anything to do with Sandys death?

I think Sandy told Grace so, but I don't know whether it's ever been checked.

NewAgeNewMe · 14/04/2025 17:52

Enjoyed episode 2 more than episode 1. That Cassian is a wrong’un. I can’t remember if he was responsible for Sandys death at the end of season 4 & as I haven’t read the books not a spoiler. I wouldn’t be surprised. Bruno is intuitive that he realised cassian wasn’t sorry.

I think there was.

diddl · 15/04/2025 08:42

Didn't she take something from Grace's house to do a DNA test?

A hairbrush, I think. But Cassian doesn't know Bruno isn't his and was fishing for info. I reckon he ran her over.

Blondeshavemorefun · 14/04/2025 00:49

He went there weekly so maybe she stalked him and saw his mistress leaving weekly wearing the green coat

She wore the same outfit every week 😅?

He’s a wrong one in my eyes and yes could have ran her over or paid someone to do it. Slippery customer I reckon.

Sandy looked terrified of him when they met. Was that because he scared her or because she'd seen someone who knew her when she was supposed to be missing/dead? I think he did something to her and that's why she ran away.

moto748e · 15/04/2025 12:20

What could Sandy have had on Cassian to even contemplate murder, though? He's certainly being presented as a right slimy git.

diddl · 15/04/2025 13:37

Or Cassian have on Sandy for her to have looked so scared?

If they'd had an affair& she didn't know who Bruno's father was would that be reason enough to run away & neither of them know they might have a son?

A secret past that she didn't want Grace to know about?

I'm wondering now if it was suicide.

Clawdy · 15/04/2025 14:26

Rather a confusing episode, but watchable.

EggandStress · 15/04/2025 16:03

It was said that Sandy had killed herself in the last series (after being run over and after Grace and Clio visited her in hospital).

parking is a nightmare.
love the programme, do laugh at some of the random names for places.

I thought a dna test had been done.

Freysimo · 15/04/2025 16:58

Don't try and make sense of it, it's completely daft.

Gloriia · 15/04/2025 17:03

How did they make the man take an overdose, all made to look like he was sat comfy in his chair? Again, surely there have been signs of a disturbance broken objects bruising on his face as he was forced to swallow pills.
It was the oddest drama I've seen for ages.

moto748e · 15/04/2025 17:14

Ground the pills up and put them in his food.

lazymum99 · 15/04/2025 22:08

I reckon we are all a bit confused by the storyline because they shove a whole book into one under 2 hour episode. I haven’t read the books but if there is anyone who has read this one could they post more detail about he made them commit suicide.
