Whoop. S5 starts

Can't wait - love this and seems s6 is on the cards as well

The new four-part series will adapt four stories from Pater James’s books,

Dead If You Don’t

Dead At First Sight

Need You Dead

Find Them Dead.

John Simm will (thankfully!) return as DS Roy Grace, and we’ll see him deal with cases including a missing teenager, a gang of fraudsters running an online dating (https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/uk/lifestyle/a63082040/dating-apps-dating-culture/)
agency, as well as themes including drugs, trafficking and judicial blackmail.

Based on the best-selling novels by Peter James, the new four-part instalment will see John Simm return as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, the hard-working police officer who’s given his life to job – and let’s just say he’s got a lot on his plate. A personal tragedy - missing persons, a brutal robbery…it’s going to be quite the series.

The Brighton-set series is based on the bestselling novels by Peter James, with the first ever episode airing in March 2021. John Simm starred in the lead role as Detective Superintendent Roy Grace, a tenacious detective haunted by the disappearance of his wife some years earlier.

Over the course of four series, he and sidekick Glenn Branson (Richie Campbell) have investigated everything from a missing groom to a vicious robbery and a 30-year-old murder case. It’s safe to say, there’s rarely been a dull moment!

There’s also a lot going on in Roy’s personal life. At the end of series 4, Roy was finally reunited with his long-lost wife, Sandy (Clare Calbraith), and she revealed he had a son named Bruno.

The news came just as Roy was preparing for the arrival of his first child with his new partner Cleo (Zoë Tapper).

In a recent interview, however, John Simm revealed that there’s tragedy in store for the couple.

When we find Cleo and Roy, they are dealing with the loss of a child which has happened between the series," he explained. "So you realise quite quickly what's happened.

They're also trying to deal with Bruno, who's now kind of living with them. They both have to try and bond with Bruno through obviously tragic circumstances, what happened to Sandy, etc in the previous series."

"It’s quite heightened but great to play, you need some dramatic tension. As actors, it's much better to play something like that. It was a lovely challenge, actually."

Zoë Tapper, who plays Cleo, said of the new storyline: "You find out very early on that she's lost the baby, so that's the sort of first image you have of her and of them is dealing with this really devastating loss.

"They were really poignant, moving scenes to film and interesting in another way, because I think for Cleo, her work is so integral to who she is as a person, and she's on bereavement leave at the beginning of this series, and Roy has had to go back to work, so they're separated in their grief as well."

Enjoyed episode 2 more than episode 1. That Cassian is a wrong’un. I can’t remember if he was responsible for Sandys death at the end of season 4 & as I haven’t read the books not a spoiler. I wouldn’t be surprised. Bruno is intuitive that he realised cassian wasn’t sorry.

No, Cassian wasn't responsible.

Thank you @Agenoria

Checking in. I too am confused about the hotel murder as that wasn't by the wronged couple was it?

I think that was a red herring. Georgina was one of his many flings, she wreaked her revenge after stalking him and dressing up in the green coat then as an aside she was targeted by the murderous rampage couple?

I may be wrong. It would seem farfetched to concoct a murder then be the target yourself for unrelated matters so I'm happy to be corrected.

E3 tonight

when a woman if discovered murdered in her flat the evidence points to a burglary gone wrong but is concealing a chilling secret

The usual gender tropes annoyed me. Roy finds out he has a son and rather than take parental leave or make any attempt to bond with and parent his child, he swans off all the time to his Big Important Job, leaving Cleo to do everything during Bruno's visits and he just pops by once in a while. Cleo made more effort with Bruno than Roy did and he's not even her kid!

And why did Bruno automatically go to live with Sandy's parents and not with his dad? Bruno didn't know his grandparents so it's not because he needed familiarity after losing his mum. Roy should have stepped up as a father straight away and Bruno could visit grandparents at the weekend instead of it being the other way round.

mum2jakie · 20/04/2025 20:31

Maybe Bruno went with (presumably retired) grandparents precisely because of the type and hours of work that Roy does? Otherwise, it really would be leaving the bulk of the parenting down to Cleo. It wasn't exactly a planned parental arrangement so can forgive Roy for not stepping up immediately. He had a lot to get used to. Presumably Cleo had some time off work due to the miscarriage too so would have more opportunity to spend time with Bruno, at least initially.

PerkyGreenCat · 20/04/2025 20:39

@mum2jakie yeah, I think you're probably right. I just felt so sorry for Bruno. His mum has just died, he's had to move to a different country where he doesn't know anyone and is living with family who are strangers to him. His dad is too busy with work to be bothered with him much. It felt like he was an inconvenience.

I need to have a word with myself, it's not real, it's just a TV show! 😂

howcanitbetrue · 20/04/2025 21:09

I'm a bit behind tonight but I can't believe there are two police offers with problems who are being sidetracked by family matters. Presume either/both are involved in the plotlines - ie they drop the ball on a crucial bit of evidence.

howcanitbetrue · 20/04/2025 21:42

Three if you count Bella

howcanitbetrue · 20/04/2025 21:55

That was a good episode!

moto748e · 21/04/2025 00:49

Oh, come on, that was just terrible! The stereotypical chase up ladders up ladders and along walkways that we've all seen a million times, but wait, the twist this time is, he's chasing his own boss? 🙄I did think, in earlier eps, that Grace might be a bit more aware of Cassian than he was making out (beyond his obvious dislike, I mean), but it seems not! Not a great detective, as well as being not a great husband, and not a great father (maybe). Cleo must be pondering.

moto748e · 21/04/2025 01:01

Also, even just basic drama stuff: any storyline that relies on a lengthy piece of explication, in a police interview, even, three-quarters the way through, is very lazy writing. "Show, don't tell", FFS.

Yes it is odd that at an awful murder scene one of them is scratching his chin musing over his poor dp's work situation. There's a time and a place surely to be discussing personal matters.

I just cannot imagine what catastrophic head injury would cause blood to drip through floor boards onto someone sleeping below as if a tap had been left on.

Not much else on so I'll perservere but it is very clunky and silly.

NicolaDeLaHaye · 21/04/2025 08:24

The Cassian character was turning into a pantomime villain with a pantomime name to match. Just what is wrong with him?

Happened in Cracker as well The storyline where prostitutes were being murdered

JenniferBooth · 21/04/2025 13:59

I thought that there had already been DNA done?

Or is it the case that he's assumed to be Bruno's dad unless provided otherwise as they were married?

(Or doesn't that happen anymore?)

howcanitbetrue · 21/04/2025 16:22

See, I've never like Cassian . What sort of name is that. Always thought he was creepy.

I think Cassian is a great name.

Think a few of us thought he was a wrong 'un though.

moto748e · 21/04/2025 17:30

Also, Cassian is a senior rank to Roy, and yet Roy often calls him 'Cassian' rather than Sir. And it's not like they're mates. This always struck me as weird,
