But "Corrie" and "Enders" (yuk) suffer from the problem of all soaps - they are lauded as "realistic", and "gritty", and yet: people get jobs within a hundred yards and a couple of weeks of losing their last one, the local pub is always open and always available for functions at short notice, people forget their entire histories and fixate on what has happened to them over the last 5-6 months (this is official soap scriptwriting policy), key family members don't turn up for funerals and weddings, everyone goes the the pub/cafe/launderette in their lunch hour...

"Doctor Who" is outlandish fantastical fun which doesn't pretend to be "believable" for a minute.

tortoiseSHELL · 13/05/2008 13:33

Ones I haven't seen are;
Lost
The Apprentice
24
Sex in the City
The Office
Dr Who
Torchwood
Little Britain

In fact just about all the programmes mentioned on this thread with the exception of Friends which I love!

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/05/2008 13:35

Yes, but Dr Who is still dozy old nonsense though UQD, it's still crap, just a different category of crap (fight, fight, fight!! )

DeeRiguer · 13/05/2008 13:37

satc ....pointless piffle with plenty of product placement and psuedo awareness oh so dreary story lines..

the sopranos is fab though
cant beleive anyone doesnt like it

love corrie, the dialogue is the ting
norris and roy are the best characters atm imho

most telly is nonsense
chewing gum for the eyes as they say..

UnquietDad · 13/05/2008 13:37

It's very well-made though. And cleverly-scripted. I think people judge it by the old series which had some ropey eps.

MargaretMountford · 13/05/2008 13:38

have to defend Coronation Street - love Roy too and Eileen !

Lauriefairycake · 13/05/2008 13:38

Reality tv including the Apprentice
Dr Who/Torchwood
Smallville
The OC/Hollyoaks
Soap Operas including the Bill

I love most of those mentioned here
like Frasier/Friends/SATC/Brothers and Sisters/Desperate Housewives/Grays Anatomy/ER/Moonlighting/30 Something

PuppyMonkey · 13/05/2008 13:40

Corrie isn't supposed to be realistic. It's the sixties with modern bits thrown in. I can't believe you're not a fan of Roy Cropper...

UnquietDad · 13/05/2008 13:42

I agree it isn't supposed to be realistic. I don't think critics share that view.

Who's Roy Cropper?!

DeeRiguer · 13/05/2008 13:44

anyone watching a soap for reality blast is sadly misguided uqd
it just a soap..not a version of real life in any shape or form
i mean if that was the case why could people who earn living in laundrettes/mini cabs/pulling pints even afford to live in the houses they do in east end..
dont even think of the relationship angle of it all..

they are escapism dressed up as real life, no?

UnquietDad · 13/05/2008 13:44

deerigeur - oh I agree, I just wish more people would be honest about that.

DeeRiguer · 13/05/2008 13:47

oh roy is fab
he runs greasy spoon Roys Rolls cafe as ecologically as possible and has banned the builders due to their dodgy dealings with protected bats!
he's married hayley (who used to be harold) and
makes one half of a lovely couple!
he's also officially a trainspotter
what's not to love..

CatIsSleepy · 13/05/2008 13:51

have seen a little bit of Curb your Enthusiasm and didn't think it was very funny, even though I love Seinfeld

saw one episode of Scrubs and thought it was shite

was underwhelmed by Lost
and relieved when 24 moved to Sky as I didn't have to waste any more hours of my life worrying about the next ridiculous situation keifer's daughter was going to get herself into

molecularbreakdown · 13/05/2008 13:51

The Royle Family (eeuugh)
Little Britain
All soaps
Casualty
Anything involving football
Sex And The City

scampadoodle · 13/05/2008 13:52

Shameless
24
Lost
Sopranos
West Wing
Mad Men (tried it for 5 weeks then got fed up with complete lack of narrative drive)
Big Brother (except series 1)
Extras
Ugly Betty

Quite liked SATC but hated all that squealing over shoes & bags you're supposed to do...

binkleandflip · 13/05/2008 13:53

Shameless makes me gag - there are people who ASPIRE to be like those on shameless - thats the problem with society etc etc blah blah blah

CatIsSleepy · 13/05/2008 13:53

shameless was very good to start with then went downhill

Glad I'm not alone on Shameless. It's like, if you disapprove of their lifestyle then you're a middle class snob.

Other ones:
Little Britain
Curb your Enthusiasm
Most stuff on BBC3

But underrated is most stuff on BBC4 - aah! just how BBC2 used to be!

MamaG · 13/05/2008 13:57

MargaretMountford · 13/05/2008 13:59
