ITV’s hit crime drama The Bay is back for its fifth series, bringing more mystery, drama and emotional twists to Morecambe.

The new series starts on Sunday, 2 March at 9PM on ITV1, with episodes continuing on the Monday and Tuesday.

Marsha Thomason – who took over from Morven Christie as series lead for season 3 in 2022 – will return as family liaison officer DS Jenn Townsend (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-bay-season-4-marsha-thomason-jenn-newsupdate/)
, who will once again be tasked with investigating a shocking crime.

Meanwhile, other regular cast members back for the new season include Daniel Ryan as DI Anthony 'Tony' Manning, Erin Shanagher as DS Karen Hobson and Andrew Dowbiggin as DS James Clarke.

There are also new arrivals in the shape of Happy Valley star Olwen May and The Full Monty's Tara Lynne O’Neill, while some more returnees include Barry Sloane as Chris Fischer, Georgia Scholes as his daughter Erin, and David Carpenter and Emme Hayes as Jenn’s children Conor and Maddie.

A synopsis for the new run teases: "When 23-year-old university student Hannah is found dead on the edge of the docks, Morecambe’s MIU team has another case to solve

Jenn, who is returning to work following the death of her father, pushes aside her own grief to support Hannah’s bitterly divided family.

"With the stakes of the investigation high, Jenn and the team dig deeper into the case, uncovering hidden friendships and secret liaisons as anger rises in the student community."

@Gloriia I think the earlier series are definitely worth a watch

Agree. Think 1&2 the best

3 possibly not so good. Think that was the twins

'The woman who replaced him (while he was off,) was dreadful!'

Yes she seemed to be channelling Anna Maxwell Martin's sour faced character in Line of Duty.

Ive only seen the last 2 series are the first couple any better?

Yeah, she was defo copying Anna is L.O.D. Almost like a carbon copy of the behaviour and character!

Well definitely disappointed with the ending on this one, and there was some seriously terrible acting in this show , Hannah’s Mum, Craig etc, the brother … Tony seemed to shout his way through the whole thing as a prelude to his heart attack , Jen is also very unlikeable, feels like the series has lost its way which is a shame because the first couple of series were really good

I agree first couple of series were watchable but we've only watched the last couple of series for views of Morecambe which is close to where we live. Unfortunately this latest series didn't even show much of Morecambe at all either, so nothing of interest for us. A plot that took 6 episodes that could have been done in one without all the irrelevant boring "side stories" (ofsted, cuts etc) drone footage of nothing in particular, and very disappointing that they didn't even use the real Lancaster University. Add in the poor casting and bad acting. I won't bother if they make another series, but realistically, I think it's the end of the road and I'd be surprised if they make another.

They’re all mad. Not one of the main adult characters displays any maturity or professionalism and the kids wouldn’t be out of place in a Kevin The Teenager sketch.

I find Chris really irritating.

Jenn had got really angry & shouted & when she apologised I think he said something like "the kids were really scared"

I couldn't help thinking that it had been a long time coming!

I think she should fuck the lot of them off!

Well maybe not her own kids.

But bloody Erin!

Come on! Chris was holding the family together. Yes, Jenn was under stress, but lots of people's jobs are stressful and demanding, not just hers.

Have only just binge watched this latest series, and have to say compared to earlier ones I thought this quite good. Or my memory of the earlier series not being very good.

Found the story line quite interesting, and although I had my suspicions about who the killer was, still liked the way it took them some time to get there.

But realised that I find the family drama / tension all a bit tedious. Although I think there was less in this one. But then finishing in the final scene of the final episode we are all one big happy family just a tiny bit fake.

And in fact nearly everyone in the family is not very likeable.

But suspect they are hoping for another series with the question of whether 2 key members of the police team will return.

The Ofsted thing made me laugh - 3 days notice! They give 24 hours notice irl.

And the head teacher deciding to call in sick 😮

deeahgwitch · 23/03/2025 07:59

Did they have different writers/ producers/ directors in this series I wonder ?

Two new directors. One I don't know and can't remember his name, the other was Shaun Evans from Endeavour. They did three consecutive episodes each.

Thank you for replying to my question @Zenana 💐
