ITV’s hit crime drama The Bay is back for its fifth series, bringing more mystery, drama and emotional twists to Morecambe.

The new series starts on Sunday, 2 March at 9PM on ITV1, with episodes continuing on the Monday and Tuesday.

Marsha Thomason – who took over from Morven Christie as series lead for season 3 in 2022 – will return as family liaison officer DS Jenn Townsend (www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/the-bay-season-4-marsha-thomason-jenn-newsupdate/)
, who will once again be tasked with investigating a shocking crime.

Meanwhile, other regular cast members back for the new season include Daniel Ryan as DI Anthony 'Tony' Manning, Erin Shanagher as DS Karen Hobson and Andrew Dowbiggin as DS James Clarke.

There are also new arrivals in the shape of Happy Valley star Olwen May and The Full Monty's Tara Lynne O’Neill, while some more returnees include Barry Sloane as Chris Fischer, Georgia Scholes as his daughter Erin, and David Carpenter and Emme Hayes as Jenn’s children Conor and Maddie.

A synopsis for the new run teases: "When 23-year-old university student Hannah is found dead on the edge of the docks, Morecambe’s MIU team has another case to solve

Jenn, who is returning to work following the death of her father, pushes aside her own grief to support Hannah’s bitterly divided family.

"With the stakes of the investigation high, Jenn and the team dig deeper into the case, uncovering hidden friendships and secret liaisons as anger rises in the student community."

The shoplifter was very brazen. Stealing right infront of her

Yeah, she was. Like she thought she had something on her. Poor Erin. As for Tony, it wasn't looking good for him at best, was it, but bloody hell! And not making the apology? Just do it, FFS!

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2025 06:39

Given I know exactly how inaccurate the whole Ofsted thing was , I am assuming their policing facts are somewhat off... I assume there is no way Karen wouldn't have been given union representation given a (spurious) complaint was raised against her and Tony wouldn't in reality be dealing with it.

Erin had helped her in a previous episode. She'd told her the shop owner wouldn't notice, or something like that.

Did she help her or just ignore her

I thought at first they were friends from school etx

Erin didn't actively help the shoplifter, she said she'd turn a blind eye just once but that her boss was into her.

Shoplifter is Poppy's mum.

I do wonder if it's just the locals who are fans, spotting all the filming locations.

Us haha! It really is a truly dreadful series but my sister’s house was on it and I vaguely know Tom Lister (Carl King) although that’s not his real surname.

so cal got tossed over the cliff and survived

To be fair, it’s not a very big cliff, although IRL, you couldn’t get a car there.

Ohhh i didn't click that it was Poppys mum! Wonder if that will lead to a bigger storyline where poppy goes to live with them?

You know the cliff ?

I love it when people are local on here

@Blondeshavemorefun I think Poppy is the younger daughters school friend who didn’t want her to see where she lived

Very much so! It’s one of my favourite places off a dog walk and my sister’s house overlooks it. I’m pretty sure you could survive a fall off it quite easily!

duc748 · 10/03/2025 15:07

Don't try this at home, kids!

it looked a long way down /up when we saw him lying there

plus guess head injury via rocks

I was convinced Tony was about to have a heart attack as he'd touched his chest a few times but a crash ! Do we think he's being written out ? He was talking to his partner saying he'd had enough .

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/03/2025 17:20

Yes I said about him always touching chest the other week - hope he’s ok

seems very unforgotten. She wanted to be written out and dead

Hope Tony is ok

Jenn seems to be very uninvolved with her kids? Her Mum, Conor's G-ma, had to tell her he'd broken up with his boyfriend.

My theory is that Hannah's Mum was the violent one in her and Steve's relationship and hence Hannah didn't want to have much to do with her. We're told the police were called out by Hannah to DV but not which parent was the victim. We saw Hannah's Mum (sorry can't remember her name) really shouting at Craig and then being embarrassed when Jenn saw her.

That almost kiss between Jenn and Steve - ffs! They've had a few laughs in the 3 or 4 conversations they've had since meeting (in the worst possible circumstances) and then all of a sudden they nearly snog. Tut tut!

Gloriia · 10/03/2025 17:43

How does a carpet fitter and a cleaner afford such a lovely house. Ditto Jen, a detective plus teacher can't be loaded surely, their house is also v impressive.

duc748 · 10/03/2025 17:46

I actually thought that scene rang quite true. It showed Steve's head to be all over the place.

PrincessScarlett · 10/03/2025 17:56

@Blondeshavemorefun yes Poppy is Maddie's friend from school.

@LindorDoubleChoc I also think Hannah's mum was the violent one when she was married to Steve. Everyone has assumed that Steve was the abusive partner but Steve is now coming across as the nicer and more stable of the two parents.

Morecambe is cheap, relatively.

It just all looks so gorgeous I wonder why it's cheap. Maybe they miss out any scruffy areas.

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2025 18:15

Think we saw them at Poppy's!

Piggywaspushed · 10/03/2025 18:17

Tony's airbag didn't seem to deploy. Presumably that was just the filming and not a plot point!

Gloriia · 10/03/2025 18:21

I must've missed an episode in series 3 do we know who Tony's gf is, wasn't he wirh his ex wife in the last one?
