Any one else watched it?

Binged it over a couple of days. I'm not sure what to think.

There is a documentary coming to Disney Plus tonight called Scamanda, about Amanda Riley who is now in prison for faking illness and ripping people off. Her husband even went to court to lower his child support to his ex based on having to pay for medical bills for Amanda's non existent cancer. I will be watching later, I've become a bit fascinated by the stories of influencers and vloggers who end up in disgrace.

Me to!!!

Quite enjoyed the Dropout with Amanda seyfried too. Bit slow at first but was hooked by the end. She conned in a very different way but the level of sociopath behaviour exhibited is off the charts. On Disney plus.

really looking forward to Scamanda later!

GlitchStitch · 20/02/2025 12:37

Is that about Elizabeth Holmes? I started to watch a documentary about her but her fake voice made me want to put my head through the screen!

I watched An Update On Our Family last night, about the Stauffer family. They didn't fake illness but adopted a child, exploited him on their channel for over 2 years and then gave him up. Was really disturbing.

Katie Sorensen is another one, her story is just bizarre. I can only think that the need for adulation becomes so great that they lose their minds.

Oooo great, thanks for the heads up.

If we take the Clive character from ACV at face value he was sceptical and tried to get her to stop scamming.
Don't see that he had many good options- carry on or blow the whistle on her.

I’m not normally a fan of true crime but really enjoyed this. The Clive character is interesting, I’d assumed he’d told his story which is why he was getting a sympathetic portrayal, although it does suggest he knew something about it.

The Milla part of the story was really sad.

I watched the Australian documentary. The dramatisation doesn't quite paint the full picture of the real-life 'Milla'. The real young woman was almost certainly terminally ill even if she'd had her arm amputated. And she had had some conventional treatment first.
All very, very sad.

Oh brilliant. I listened to the podcast and it was fascinating.

I can't see any info on that when I googled only that it's on Hulu?

GlitchStitch · 20/02/2025 17:29

Sorry it's premiering on Disney Plus tomorrow, not tonight.

Just binged this. Found it a bit confusing at first but I deliberately didn't google it before I watched it. Very interesting and desperately sad. Awful to think about those poor people who believed in her and other similar rubbish.

Eldermilleniallyogii · 20/02/2025 18:20

I haven't seen it yet but I've watched some of the recent interviews and she has no remorse for what she's done

Is the Australian one different to the one on ITV?

GlitchStitch · 20/02/2025 19:25

I think so as I don't remember the ITV one talking about the real "Milla". It's been added to Netflix now too.

ArtTheClown · 20/02/2025 19:26

Thanks to whoever recommended the Anatomy of Lies documentary. It's wild.

I may be confusing them, it may have been the ITV documentary. It's such a fascinating and horrible story, I binge-watched the Netflix drama then went in search of the real-life accounts.

I also watched an Australian one on YouTube which was mainly an extended interview with Belle Gibson.

It's insane isn't it. Amazing how she made herself untouchable even though some colleagues were suspicious. The fake Tree of Life shooting story was so far fetched I don't know how it wasn't questioned, as if they let civilians in to clean up crime scenes!

I feel so bad for the family she manipulated her way into, especially the children who had already had so much trauma.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 20/02/2025 22:25

The scene where Millas mum collapsed out of her wheel chair and you could see the blood on the seat of her trousers was heart breaking.

@PrincessBing Jess Ainscough (the inspiration for Milla)'s mum died from breast cancer. Not that that's any less horrific, but I didn't want you dwelling on that image from the TV show and thinking it happened that way IRL.

FanofLeaves · 20/02/2025 23:08

Ive just started the book and oh my god. Belle did actually pull Jes’ fiance aside at the wake and asked him for a private chat and cried into his shoulder and said how terrified she was to die 😮 he said he was so bewildered and confused by who she even was and what she was doing there that he just let her. No one could work out how she got to the house or why she’d come but they sort of politely comforted her.

What a nerve

sillybillydh · 21/02/2025 11:27

I'm almost through and really enjoying ACV. It's so shocking.
Re the Milla character. Did the girl she's based on also never go back to get proper tests and just lied about being cancer free? Or was she just totally deluded? I'd hope the later of she actually then encouraged her mum to follow the same which essentially ended up killing her.
