Any one else watched it?

Binged it over a couple of days. I'm not sure what to think.

The '60 minutes' documentary is coming to Netflix at the end of Feb, that's worth a watch as it lets you know what happened at the end with the charity fraud and where she is now and what she's up to

I listened to The Scmanda podcast a while ago about another wellness influencer who lied. I don't know why I'm so drawn to these kinds of stories, I'm fascinated! I also loved open.spotify.com/show/2XDmYuGRP1bq2AxMRsFzOt?si=EVT5W-I5T6SKJpfS55oDZw the Bad Blood podcast Elizabeth Holmes and the theranos debacle.

Edited

I also have a weird fascination with this kind of stuff! Believe in Magic is another brilliant podcast if you haven't already listened. So intriguing and also sad https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/brand/p0fhzh45?partner=uk.co.bbc&origin=share-mobile

Read an article today on local online news about a woman with terminal cancer fundraising to go to Mexico to an alternative clinic. Googled the clinic and one of the treatment is coffe enemas.

jay55 · 17/02/2025 12:32

Finished this yesterday. Remembered the story of the scammer but didn't know there were two in the same space.

When my sister was out of treatment options the number of people pushing cannabis concoctions on her was distressing enough. I think she'd have thrown juices back at anyone who tried to suggest those.

I couldn't get a handle on Clive either. He could have walked away early on.

sofio · 17/02/2025 14:22

I know someone through work who I suspect
might be lying about something similar, but yes as the pp said, it's so hard to call it out unless you have all the information and facts.

Can't believe two people on this thread that they feel a bit sorry for her.

I don't know if it's because I've had cancer but I don't feel that way at all. She should be in prison.

I agree she should be in jail but her back story did offer some explanation as to why she was a compulsive liar.

ArtTheClown · 17/02/2025 22:32

felt very sorry for the Jess character by the end. She was only 23 when she was diagnosed, it was easy to see how she got sucked into the wellness movement when she was presented with the prospect of losing an arm.

I've looked that up and it's an absolutely brutal operation, they take off the scapula and clavicle as well and need to close it with skin grafts:

I mean, they're both grifters but in different ways, and one paid a higher price than the other for the grift.

Cancer grifters (and I include 'positive mental attitude' people in that category) absolutely boil my piss, I hate them all, so I rage watched this. Thought it was smart and clever and the influencer 'gloss' of it was really thought-provoking. Is Lucy a real person, does anyone know?

Toddlerhelpplease123 · 17/02/2025 23:49

Absolutely mental!

The mills/jess story is very sad. That poor dad

TheElvesLongSleeves · 18/02/2025 05:02

I don't think Jess was a grifter. I think she waa basically a cult victim

Lucy isn’t a real person as such but probably based on someone. I’m going to read the book next I think, ‘The Woman Who Fooled the World’

I probably would feel sorry for a lot of people in prison, I imagine the vast majority of them have had rotten luck and a challenging upbringing. Doesn't mean I agree with their actions which lead them to prison.

I also have enormous sympathy for people with cancer, I've experienced it in my family, will likely experience it myself, I can't imagine there is anyone on this thread who hasn't known someone close to them been diagnosed with cancer and seen how frightening and terrible it can be.

Sympathy isn't finite. I think Bella was a very lonely and troubled person. I don't think she was evil.

Book, insta feed, range of juices? That's when the victim hood turns to grift imo.
