Can't see a thread on this yet.
I've just finished watching this three parter. Is anyone else watching it?
It's so sad seeing the effect the management and media had on all of them. I already hated Louis Walsh but this cements it for me!

@DJrocks No and I don't believe I ever said that it did. Shane comes across as a thoroughly decent, down to earth person.

Ronan's personally + ego + pearl earring= knob. IMO.

DJrocks · 07/02/2025 06:44

So someone who wears jewellery is a knob? You don’t know the bloke. Shane had a bracelet on in the documentary. Is he a knob too?

Hello Ronan 👋

Hello Ronan 👋

Oh hahahaha! Aren’t you funny 🙄

Convinced it was LW that tipped the press off re Stephen. The way he acted when he was handed the newspaper with that headline on. He was like an excitable little boy. He's vile 🤢

cliffdiver · 08/02/2025 09:50

Watching the documentary prompted me to buy Stephen Gately and Boyzone on my Kindle. Apparently it was a bodyguard trying to sell the story about Stephen being gay to the papers.

Disclaimer: I’m not actually sure how credible the book is!

After watching the final episode, I was surprised how little Stephen’s family were involved following his death. Boyzone seemingly organised the funeral, kept vigil and carried his coffin.

This Insta post made me laugh 🤭

If anyone knows me in real life this will totally out me.

Love me for a Reason came out a month after my dad died. We had watched their first appearance on the Late Late Show and dad joked how awful they were and they'd never make it lol. I was obsessed at a really difficult time in my life they brought me real joy.

Mikey was totally my favourite from day one. Shortly after I began dating my husband Mikey brought out You're my Angel we had only been dating a few weeks and it was the first thing he bought me. The song has always meant so much to me and it has always been a standing joke that the husband is definitely my No 2.

I've just watched the first 2 parts while DH and DS were out and found it really interesting.
Agree Louis Walsh does not come across well at all, and felt sad for Mikey.

But it seems history repeats itself time and again as shown by the bbc boy bands documentary last year. And 1D weren't on it but I think the pattern repeated with them that as teens they are promised fame and fortune (and obviously they got the fame - more than they might ever have imagined) but as very young , not yet adult boys they are not supported or protected from everything that comes with it.

Louis telling them he was "working" and promoting them when he was basically making up fake stories to sell to the tabloids.

AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta · 08/02/2025 16:40

@Fizbosshoes That BBC boybands documentary was a terrible eye opener. There was at least one member from every band who was damaged somehow by it all and it's really no different now, just look at Liam Payne. The music industry and the people who run it really do give zero fucks and will just spit you out once they have rung you dry. I wonder if they'll do a girlbands one too.

I vividly remember that plane crash story coming out as a few girls at my school were in tears that morning at the thought of how close their idols came to dying. Strange how none of the papers though to check it out though.

I thought the plane crash or other "near disater" stories were disgraceful. Their families could have read that and been distraught, and not necessarily able to contact them. Literally no thought about that, from Louis, as he sat there chuckling at his made up stories.
But even now, the same thing happened with Liam Payne that the story (although tragically true) was released before the family had been informed. They read it on social media.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/02/2025 20:15

Watching this now. Louis Walsh and the newspaper! Absolute scumbag. Done himself no favours with this doc.

MonickerMonica · 08/02/2025 20:28

Finally watched the 1st of 3 so about to watch next one. 🫤

Louis intrigues me. A strange man indeed.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/02/2025 20:32

I read a book last year called Reach For The Stars by Michael Cragg and that covers a lot of manufactured bands including Girls Aloud, he doesn't come across well in that either!

That was a GREATbook. Id highly recommend it for anyone who grew up on late 90s pop and the smtv cduk era

It's a brilliant book. I was a bit 😳 when one of the managers (can't remember of which band) admitted the tried to deliberately keep the members insecure about their place in the band so that they would be more docile. What a horrible way to live.

Loved reading about the Spice Girls and Mel B I think described Geri as a bullshitter who they all went along with for the ride!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 08/02/2025 21:08

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta

@itsnotabouthepasta

Yes it was a great book, the stuff about 5ive was 👀

itsnotabouthepasta · 08/02/2025 21:09

@AnAlpacaForChristmasPleaseSanta my literal only criticism of that book was that there wasn’t a playlist ready made to go and download all those songs! I made my own obv and I listen to it fairly regularly on the cross trainer!!

the stuff about how Rachel Steven’s didn’t realise that Some Girls was about blow jobs made me HOWL!

wordleinthemorning · 08/02/2025 21:21

Louis Walsh is an odious little man. He definitely was the one who outed Stephen.

witwatwoo · 08/02/2025 21:37

Just watching it - horrendous - the Sun journalist is odious

LoafofSellotape · 08/02/2025 23:28

Lighten up 😂

Thornybush · 09/02/2025 08:22

God I've always thought Louis was an eejit but never realised what a toxic , nasty dweeb he really is. I actually lol'd at him and Sharon on factor, she used to call him Lou Lou.
The way he treated those men when they were boys is disgusting. He is so fickle. And spreading vicious rumours shows just how far he'll go to make a quick buck. Vile man.

I thought they all came across well. Shane renowned for being a hard man is a softie deep down. He was always hugging Steo in the old footage. I like Keith's personality, he seems like good fun. And poor Mikey is a troubled soul. He looked so young and innocent and full of hope in their early says. It's sad to see him sound so defeated and to hear how depressed he was.
Who could blame Ronan for wanting a slice of the solo life. Boyzone had reached saturation by that point. He wanted to try out pastures new. The others not being as hungry and opportunistic as him wasn't his fault. He eventually saw the error of his ways and they embarked on another Boyzone tour before Steven passed away, which I'm sure Ronan is thankful for now.

cliffdiver · 09/02/2025 14:09

I started reading the Reach for The Stars this morning but couldn’t even get through the first chapter.. it just was pages of quotations.

Briefly dipped into other chapters but it was no different.

I actually returned it to Amazon it was that bad.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 09/02/2025 14:11

Oh that's a shame @cliffdiver personally I really enjoyed it

itsnotabouthepasta · 09/02/2025 17:15

It wasn’t a great writing style @cliffdiver but I found the insights really interesting. I can see how others would struggle cos your right, it was very quote heavy
