Can't see a thread on this yet.
I've just finished watching this three parter. Is anyone else watching it?
It's so sad seeing the effect the management and media had on all of them. I already hated Louis Walsh but this cements it for me!

Louis Walsh is a piece of work. What a nasty man.

It was a really interesting documentary. I feel like they could have gone into even more topics and 3 episodes wasn't enough.

Myfanwyprice · 02/02/2025 17:29

I feel like the next documentary of this type will be about Louis Walsh - I imagine westlife and those he mentored on X factor etc will have similar stories, what an awful man.

walsh when he looks at the front page outing Stephen gately … rank

Tabitha500 · 02/02/2025 17:54

I binged this today! A very insightful documentary! I also disliked Louis Walsh, mainly from when he was in Celebrity Big Brother, but he was truly awful looking at the front of the newspaper regarding Stephen Gately and laughing! Really horrible thing to do especially seeing all the hurt that was being felt by the others and his family! A very good documentary and well worth a watch!

MustBeGinOclock · 02/02/2025 20:50

Luis Walsh looks quite ill to me.
Docu itself hmm wasn't the most exciting I've got to say.

TequilaAndPickles · 02/02/2025 20:54

I watched it all earlier, was a huge fan back in the day.

He was diagnosed with a cancer

coolmum123 · 02/02/2025 22:33

I’ve just finished watching this. I had no opinion on Louis Walsh before this as I very rarely watched X Factor but I came away today really disliking him. He is horrible. I felt so sad about Steven Gately. I thought the documentary was very good as a non Boyzone fan.

DurhamDurham · 02/02/2025 22:37

It was fascinating and I think they could easily have made a fourth episode. Sad that Mikey didn't meet up with the others, maybe be will if and when he's ready to.
I thought Ronan looked great, he's aged very well.

Louis came across as a truly awful man, no empathy at all for what the band members were going through. Laughing at that front page was hideous.

Lookwhoitisnae · 02/02/2025 22:41

Binge watched it at 5am this morning! I used to be a BZ fan back in the 90's though! (I had a BZ pager!)
I thought it was really insightful. I felt so sorry for Mikey though.
I did notice that Ronan and his manager produced and directed it.
Ronan didnt come across great and neither did Louis. But he did his job and made them famous. I'd forgotten how sad it was when Stephen died. Poor lad being forced to come out.
Sad how it ended though. Mikey understandably wants nothing to do with them. The film of 3 of them laughing and then Mike sat by himself was very poignant.

Sockmate123 · 02/02/2025 22:54

Excellent documentary. I was a fan back in the day. Felt so sorry for Mikey. Louis didn't come across well...laughing at the front page about Stephen.
Who leaked the story I wonder? 😡
His premature death was so heartbreaking to rematch 💔

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/02/2025 23:18

Watched the first one so far. Lovely to see the boys. Why does Shane look so youthful? Amazing skin.

I finally saw them live a few years ago, it was a dream come true 😊

Greentableleg · 03/02/2025 00:02

Just finished watching all three parts. Louis Walsh positively salivating over the front page story about Stephen coming out was nauseating. I was at some of those concerts they showed and memories flooded back.

I thought they were all quite honest about the ups and downs of being a pop star. Mikey has obviously suffered and the fact he wouldn't film with the others spoke volumes.

Firefly1987 · 03/02/2025 01:18

I don't have Sky so can't watch this! Hoping someone puts it on youtube at some point. I used to be a fan in the day, saw them in concert a couple times but don't know too much about their personal lives or experiences in the band so I'd LOVE to watch it. I imagine Ronan comes across as arrogant, Shane a bit of a prat and Keith comes across well? What's the deal with Mikey-why doesn't he speak to the others? Louis is obviously way more ruthless than I gave him credit for! And that's just going by the trailer.

DizzyPuss · 03/02/2025 02:06

Ah this was so heartbreaking to watch.

My daughter was 5 when Love Me For A Reason hit the big time, and she immediately became a fan. I had been a massive Osmond's fan from age 8-16 and loved that they had re-released the song with Boyzone singing it.

I encouraged my daughter with her fanaticism, she saw her first BZ concert in Manchester with me and her dad in 1997, then her friend and her mum accompanied us to the one a year later after her dad and I had split up.

I don't think we went to the 1999 farewell tour concerts, however we did go to see Ronan and also attended The Games when Shane Lynch took part. My daughter, Becki, hung around outside of Manchester Granada studio waiting for a glimpse of Keith Duffy, and Steo, her favourite, we went to see in Cinderella in Kent, and to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in London, Becki and other fans used to meet once a year in Hyde Park in the noughties to have their Steo Picnics, and Steo actually attended some of them with his boyfriend, joining in the quizzes and games they played. He signed pictures, greetings cards and records to give to fans within that gathering, as prizes sometimes, and even signed a Get Well Soon card for Becki after surgery.

It was so lovely to meet him at least 4 or 5 times in my case, and more times for my daughter, he was such a loving, gentle and kind man.

I appreciated the documentary very much, and agree that there was so much more info on each band member that could've been included. Louis Walsh came across so badly, my opinion of him has gone right down as I really wasn't quite aware of how badly he'd treated them. It seems obvious that he manipulated Ronan so that he became the scapegoat when they split up the first time, and caused so much tension from separating him from the others to do more TV presenting work and such.

I cried when I watched the footage as they were splitting up, and was in tears again throughout almost all of the 3rd episode when they were talking about poor Steo and his passing. I remember watching his Mass and funeral on Sky TV when it was broadcast live, again my daughter was so devastated when he died.

I'm sorry this is such a long post, but both my daughter and I have carried on loving Boyzone, we attended their concerts in 2007 and 2008, we attended a special celebrity concert in London that was held as a tribute to Stephen after he died, which Boyzone attended, and we later watched their last shows and bought their later albums before finally splitting for good in 2019, it's so tragic that so much Ill feeling has built up. I was sad that Mikey didn't feel able to meet up with the others, but I was glad that we were able to hear his side of their story too.

Every time I watch a boy band documentary I realise how much the 'kids'(and they are kids ) are worked too hard and are 'used.'

There is so much pressure.

The management is responsible every single time.

walsh when he looks at the front page outing Stephen gately … rank

He just didn’t care did he. The glee of it all was shocking. I strongly suspect he was behind the story but of course can’t say so now
Horrible horrible man

LonelyMom123 · 03/02/2025 08:54

Louis Walsh is the lowest of the low. His reaction to Stephen Gately's newspaper 'coming out' interview was despicable and imo made all the worse by the fact that despite all the rumours about his own sexuality, he has never chosen or been forced to talk about it.
I felt for Mikey. Love his accent. Also Shane looks so good!

itsnotabouthepasta · 03/02/2025 10:16

I loved every minute of it. I was a huge BZ fan (still am to be honest) and my husband came with me so many times to see the boyz live, that he sat and watched all three episodes with me

I think it could have been a few more episodes to be honest - there was a lot they missed out (Shane getting drunk and swearing live on stage at the MTV awards - keith was absolutely LIVID at that, the groundbreaking moment that they were the first boyband to openly have girlfriends and kids - I suspect that cos Mikey split with his ex, Ronan split from Yvonne and Keith recently split from Lisa is probably the reason why).

I felt the last episode was a bit rushed - what actually happened in 2019 that made Shane/Keith go and get wrecked on stage, that's not professional so yes, I think Ronan/Mick were right to be pissed off.

I felt that Shane/Keith have clearly understood their role in the band. Shane in particular made a point of saying that before they first reunited and was ready to thump Ronan, he'd been milling things around in his head so much that things actually seemed worse than they actually had been in reality. I got the impression that is what's happened to Mikey - he's been milling over the same issues for so long, they've escalated in his head so its become unmanageable.

I absolutely think that Louis was the one who sold the story on Steo. The way the journalist admitted that they would trade stories and owe favours.

Louis came across horribly. He also came across as an utter dick on the BBC2 boyband documentary and on Nicky Byrnes podcast - he's ruthless and nasty. He wouldnt be where he is today without Boyzone
