Yes! It's Musicals Week!

Will we also see an Egregious Elimination?

OP posts:
Piggywaspushed · 02/12/2024 07:02

I did too! I had to reread several times!

NorthernGirl1981 · 02/12/2024 07:13

So happy that Pete, Chris and JB are still in. They are the only ones I look forward to watching so I’m very relieved they’ll be here next week and I get to watch two dances from all of them.

JB was sublime this week - I keep rewatching it. How he wasn’t scored 40, I don’t know.

NowNumber5 · 02/12/2024 09:01

So nice to see so much AJ & Kai love.
I seriously thought you'd all be wanting to flush my head down the toilet because you're sick of hearing me bleat on about them every week 🙈

@Piggywaspushed I know, feel gutted we never got to see their Show Dance.
Still think they should do it on a Christmas special or something.
I liked Rose well enough, but AJ was the stand out winner for me that series, she had me at the jive!
I didn't "know" her then and I remember watching it and thinking who is the pro?!
Because obviously Kai was new on the scene too 😍
Absolutely my favourite SCD pairing ever.
That quickstep and that dress with the feathery arm pom poms was legendary 🙌

Lentilweaver · 02/12/2024 09:20

AJ and Kai were my favourites that year too. Their jive, Charleston, QS, CC, AT...at least 5 to 6 great dances. Not seen 5 great dances this year from anyone, though JB is getting close.

Runningupthecurtains · 02/12/2024 09:32

AJ, Kelvin etc prove that you don't have to have ring-a-ding-dingers to have fantastic dancers. It's so much better to be wowed by a novice who smashes it out of the park.

MarkWithaC · 02/12/2024 09:33

Haven't RTFT so sory if I'm just rehashing stuff:

Sarah and Vito: all fur coat and no knickers. I still don't know if she's a good Charleston dancer or not, she just spent the whole thing being chucked around. Felt like I was watching a gang of mates helping someone load the furniture lorry to move house. Barely saw Vito through the whole routine.
Montell and Johannes gorgeous; very different character from most rumbas and I loved it. I did agree there was a lack of 'ooze', but I think that takes a lot of time and skill to achieve. For a sports pro she has been remarkable in her improvement.
Pete and Jowita: meh. Beautiful song but too many mistakes and he's still a bit of a plank.
Chris and Dianne: incredible. Quite apart from his actual dancing, which is ace, how on earth he navigates the floor and the extra dancers, and hits every mark and knows where everyone is and what to do on every count, is mind-boggling. And fantastic physical comedy and acting.
Tasha and Aljaz: meh. Weird outfits, a shite song (bargain basement Cell Block Tango) and the legs just made me think of Kenny Everett. Too much lifting (Craig was right, it was a show tango), no atmosphere and no chemistry between her and Aljaz.
JB and Lauren: delightful. He's so charming when he dances ballroom, stylish but cheeky, like Fred Astaire. Lauren was the spit of Julie Andrews. I feel bad for Amy saying this, but he has blossomed since he changed pros. Also, great singing, particularly when the women came in.

Results show: what a glorious pro dance. Proper ballroom dancing, proper clobber, and Nadiya and Nancy in particular looked a million dollars.
So sad for Montell. It must be crushing being in the DO all the time, and she was obviously never going to beat Tasha.
I have been a vocal fan of Pete's but I've had enough now and have lost my sense of humour about it. I'm all for watching total novices improve and fall in love with dancing, but I also think unless their improvement is exceptional they should go on or before the QF. The gulf between him and the rest is a yawning one. I'll invoke Punan and Sam again: they were both novices too and I think, if one or both of them had stayed longer, they'd have improved more than Pete has or is going to.

Samcro · 02/12/2024 09:41

of course there is a gulf between a novice and and people who have had training or are dancers.
thats why I vote Pete.

LaMarschallin · 02/12/2024 09:42

a shite song (bargain basement Cell Block Tango)

Exactly what I thought - seemed to be copying the "Pop Six Squish Uh-uh Cicero
Lipschitz" thing.
Love "Chicago".

Lentilweaver · 02/12/2024 09:43

I think Sam in particular would have improved if she hadnt been sabotaged by Icons Week and that horrible dress. And she was way more of a novice than Pete, who has showbiz experience.

Vito is VERY popular on Twitter!

Personally I don't get the hostility for Sara on here. She may have had some dance training in her youth, but she's in her FIFTIES! Why is there not more support for a woman of that age absolutely smashing it?

How many women of that age do we see on TV? ( not many)
And looking fabulous, sexy, athletic, paired with a younger guy and able to keep up with.him?

I think we should be celebrating her, not knocking her down. I'd be v happy if she won.

Completely agree with you, and so pleased to read this! So much admiration for Sarah - and personally find her and Vito's mutual hyperactive energy really endearing! It's wonderful to see a woman in her 50s genuinely smashing it!

musicalfrog · 01/12/2024 20:51

Talking about the rumba btw.

Surely someone can remember a decent rumba in the Strictly vaults??

I don't mean Shirley doing hers either, we've seen that one before.

Rachel Stevens? And what about Debbie McGee? She got pretty steamy with Gio IIRC. Not really men though, apart from thingy from East Enders ( I can't remember his name).

awaynboilyurheid · 02/12/2024 09:49

I thought this too! loved the pro dance Sunday night said to the family bet it’s Jason Gilchrist choreography and I was right! He smashes it out the park it was the most beautiful dance.

I meant more like the gap between Pete and Montell, also with no training.

Look up Colin Jackson's with Erin Boag.

I agree about Pete. I didn't warm to him at first, until I got his sense of humour ( after the Tarzan routine). I've voted for him every week until last week. He's staying at the cost of better learners. I'm really sorry to see Montell go as she was my favourite to win.

Lentilweaver · 02/12/2024 09:57

I like Pete's sense of humour. I just don't like his dancing or appearance.
I am sure he will be in the final. I didnt realise he had such a big social media following as am not on SM.

the80sweregreat · 02/12/2024 10:02

I don't mind Sarah, she is a bit full on, but she looks fantastic and moves well.
I doubt she'll win, but she is pretty good overall

bendmeoverbackwards · 02/12/2024 10:15

I don’t get all this praise for Pete’s improvement. His performance on Saturday was shocking, if anything he was better a few weeks ago.

TheShellBeach · 02/12/2024 10:52

...............and the legs just made me think of Kenny Everett

Yes, exactly!
In the best possible taste!

Well, according to Shirley at least it was better than week 4! 🤣

I don't mind him as a personality, but I really don't want to watch another okay dance littered with mistakes by him again. We should be expecting Wow! at this stage.

TheShellBeach · 02/12/2024 11:00

I think the Pete phenomenon amply demonstrates the power of social media, and the fact that SCD isn't a dance competition.

I'm not sporty, have no interest in sport and feel zero connection to sportspeople usually, but I really liked Montell. She seems lovely and I really admire her muscular arms! I thought that rumba was genuinely emotional. I'm so sorry she's gone. I like Pete but he shouldn't be there. He should've done the decent thing and resigned, like John thingy did back a few years ago - the journalist? When he knew he'd stayed beyond his ability. I really don't think Pete's heart is in this.

Sorry I am making my way through the thread so by the time I get to the end someone may have already said this but I believe John Sergeant had work commitments giving talks on a cruise ship so he had to leave. He might have quit anyway but somehow I doubt it.

Motsi to Montell and Jojo: this musical that you chose

So, the music/song is the choice of the couple? Is that usual?

Presumably the celebrity doesn’t normally have a say in the song because the professional often tells them what it is in Sunday’s Clauditorium.

You don't honestly think the Clauditorium "reveal" is the first time they know the song? Confused
Dances and songs are scheduled before the season starts.

if it was a dance competition you would have someone who is already a dace in it.
it would be split in to ability.

BogRollBOGOF · 02/12/2024 11:59

I ended up watching both shows on catch-up. I did cheekily vote blind on Saturday night while out, 2 for Montell as it was likely that she'd do a decent job and end up in the danger zone and one for Chris as he's entertaining week in week out and generally does a good job too. I wasn't disappointed with those choices when I watched it.

I was mentally prepared for Pete to get the votes regardless and Montell to end up in the dance-off against a stronger dancer and I'm not astonished that it was Tasha.

I've really enjoyed watching Montell's development. Athletes often lack the musicality, theatrics and sutbtly of movement to reach the late stages of the competition, but Montell didn't have them. And I think she's had a lovely comfortable, chemistry with Johannes.

I remember a comment on these threads in a previous year about stronger contestants going out in favour of weaker ones (last year? Angela Rippon?) being that you tend to get to the right outcome but not necessarily in the right order. I'm not sure that Montell would have made it through to the final past Tasha, Sarah, Chris and JB next week, but she would have been a worthy semi-finalist over Pete. Sam also went out too soon while stronger than several other contestants.

Pete's a nice guy (he grew on me) but his dance aptitude really doesn't justify a place in the final. He's not going to excel at two dances. He's got where he is on looks, a great dance partner with chemistry, social media and luck. I hope that the voting shifts next week and doesn't carry him through- normally these shifts happen before this point of the competition.

JB's blossoming with Lauren, their dances are interesting and fun. Chris always has something to like in his dances and is very entertaining and normally beyond competant and full respect to how he's learning each dance without the visual input and feedback that everyone else takes for granted. Sarah's brilliant and has great personality, although maybe turn down the cunniliftus in the choreography a bit; it's become clichéd now. Tasha is a very accomplished, slick dancer- there is a lack of chemistry with Aliaz though. But all of those 4 would make for worthy finalists.
