On ch4. I know there's another thread but I've binged the whole thing anyone want to chat about it

I may have imagined it but I thought Grace told Ollie that Walt's Dad occasionally sent presents from Japan (or somewhere over seas). I thought Tom was very protective of Grace as he saw her like a younger sister? I didn't get the impression he was Walt's Dad.

no - they are related

Maybe I've completely misunderstood!
I thought there were issues with the new wife (the one with the young baby) as she thought Tom was still in love with Grace.

Yes I know Tom is Penny's cousin but thought he had a relationship with Grace similar to that of siblings and was protective of her in the way an older brother would be.

She definitely did mention Walt's dad when catching up with Ollie.

I think Tom's wife mentioned him being in love with Grace because she knew there was something not quite right, that he was fucked up in some way, but was barking up the wrong tree assuming it was to do with an attractive young woman and not a middle aged man.

Oh you're right! It's been a few weeks and I've binged a few series since then. Whoops. The original question (why would he put a little boy he cares about at risk?) Is still a fair one though.

I really liked the whole thing but that last scene at the beach jarred a bit.
One minute they're at a party then they decide to go surfing - whose idea was it? When there's no surf. And they are not exactly buddies at this point. The timing was really odd.

And like a pp said, no way she could have moved his body, let alone got it on the front of her kayak.

Penny told Phil she knew what he’d done at the party and that Tom had told her, so Phil then asked Tom to go surfing. presumably to get him alone and tell him to shut up about what happened/threaten him etc?

I thought the whole thing was so brilliantly done. Loved Penny and how messed up and brave she was. I’ll miss her!

Just finished watching this, it was brilliant. I believed Penny the whole time, partly because I think a woman who has been married that long recognises sexual behaviour from their partner when they witness it, even if it's just for a split second. And also that you don't blow up your family and marriage unless you're absolutely certain. More cynically I don't believe a program like that would get made in NZ where it turns out that the woman was lying and the man was innocent...

I think Ollie was protecting Phil because he believed he was special and "chosen" by him in favour of all the other boys Phil befriended. In those last scenes with the photo and the mementos in the boxes, I think he was realising that he wasn't as special as he thought. I think the truth will come out now that Phil's dead. I hope Grace realises that her mum was right in the end.

Exactly this re identifying sexual behaviour.

Binged it all tonight. Excellent drama. I was 99% certain she was right - as this poster says - why would you blow your lufe up, plus gut instincts rarely wrong... Tom's comments about being so anxious to kerp his child safe made me wonder, but only a little. Robyn was outstanding. Yeah slerping with her friend's oh was sh*t but as she later said, her main relationship was with a paedophile. How would that not screw you up.

Thoughtful story and excellent acting.

I think Ollie misguidedly thought he was in a consensual relationship with Phil, but not realising at 14 how he was being manipulated. Phil pretty much said that at the beach. That a 14 year old knew what they wanted.

I just kept thinking they can’t ignore how inappropriate the bed thing was. There are other ways of being kind to drunk teenagers. Plus touching topless young lads at the beach that he didn’t know. Teachers and ‘kind men’ should have boundaries! So knew he must be guilty in the end.

we dont know who Walt's dad is though

I actually ended up thinking that Phil was Walt's father by episode 4.... The more I think about it, the more I have to re binge watch the whole show. Even the party flashback bit where she is sexy dancing with her dad and looks uncomfortable, perhaps even jealous , when he calls Ollie over... crying in the back of the car when they drop Ollie home.... The massive tension when Phil is coming back while Ollie visits her... Her crying that she wanted to be the one who he taught guitar and surf and he wanted her to be a son... Then they are moving to Glasgow and Phil arranges a 2 bed flat.... The hints seem as clear as the ones about Tom were. Perhaps it is that she knew about her dad and Ollie, but Holy cow, I honestly think it is even darker than dark . Tho grooming and abuse are. And I am sure that granny Joy knew a lot and brushed it under the carpet, as she did with the Ollie incident. .
It does open option for series 2....

That was Lou, who I think was the female friend of grace and olly (girl who was jumping round the bedroom and in the bathroom at the party)
