Yes, I did too.

AnonyMouse80 · 03/12/2024 14:37

I’m so loving seeing Robyn Malcolm getting the widespread adulation she has long deserved. That kind of Frances McDormand-esque talent needs to be shared wider than NZ and Australia!

the80sweregreat · 03/12/2024 18:17

Yes. The main actress is so like Francis Mc Dormand! So good. She is brilliant
I didn't love this drama , but I stuck with it and found it thought provoking. Some really good acting.

😂

Although inadvertently 'womanlywimmin's completely idiotic point has made me reflect on a great point made by the series. One of the ways sexual predators hide in plain sight. By discrediting those that see them for what they are: accusing them of being mad, hypocritical, inconsistent etc. Everyone's complex and multifaceted. I'm glad they didn't shy away from reflecting that.

As a lunatic hypocrite feminist, you probably can't, but could you explain how my point about hypocrisy and body shaming was idiotic?

Roundaboot · 04/12/2024 07:16

I'm calling dibs on LunaticHypocriteFeminist as a new user name! 😂

WaitingforStrike · 04/12/2024 07:29

T-shirt, surely.
life modelling is not a sexually proactive role in any way.

Just finished watching this, it was brilliant. I believed Penny the whole time, partly because I think a woman who has been married that long recognises sexual behaviour from their partner when they witness it, even if it's just for a split second. And also that you don't blow up your family and marriage unless you're absolutely certain. More cynically I don't believe a program like that would get made in NZ where it turns out that the woman was lying and the man was innocent...

I think Ollie was protecting Phil because he believed he was special and "chosen" by him in favour of all the other boys Phil befriended. In those last scenes with the photo and the mementos in the boxes, I think he was realising that he wasn't as special as he thought. I think the truth will come out now that Phil's dead. I hope Grace realises that her mum was right in the end.

SqueamishHamish · 05/12/2024 17:30

Excellent drama, and so well done right up to the end. Just shows how manipulative abusers are. Best thing in TV for ages.

Fordian · 06/12/2024 23:17

Do we think Tom being trans will be a point in this drama? Or were we expected to believe she was a man who'd fathered a child?

EachandEveryone · 06/12/2024 23:22

i never noticed he’s trans was we supposed to? Surely not.

Workiskilligme · 07/12/2024 06:12

No, we're not. I was just researching the cast and thought it was interesting. I never would have thought the actor was female.

Patrizia150 · 08/12/2024 17:19

I thought it was seriously good drama. I mostly understand why the writers left it open-ended and allowed the viewers to join the dots in terms of who else might have been affected by the abuse. But the Radio Times in the UK is confusing matters.

Their article states “Ollie's statement does reveal that he did previously walk into Phil's tent on a camping trip and saw him "sexually engaged" with his brother.” This suggests that Zach was a victim. I thought this was odd because the Police would have acted on this at the time. So I rewound to the scene. It wasn’t Ollie’s statement that said this, Tom was reading Zach’s statement. Which may or may not be true.

I personally think Ollie was a victim but he still held Phil in high regard. The way he touched him at the party showed a level of intimacy.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/12/2024 05:27

that was excellent
watched the the last 2 last night
thought she was right, thought she was wrong
it all made sense in the end
such a shame about shagging Simon, she lost her friends, she didnt want to jeopardise her relationship with her daughter.
and yes Ollie was having a relationship with the dad but denied it

imfae · 15/12/2024 20:45

Thought it was really good and well acted .I thought it was interesting that as time went on , the Mum started to doubt herself or maybe tried to pretend ( to herself ) that she had perhaps misjudged the situation .

She even apologised to her ex- husband .

I think it was interesting to see the reaction of the daughter who refused to believe it , but you do wonder if she had doubts . She was jealous of the relationship her father had with Ollie . However she had no hesitation whatsoever leaving her son in the care of her father .

It is quite often the spouse / siblings / parents who refuse to believe that their relative is an abuser .So interesting to see from a different angle .

I did wonder as well if he had been a teacher for decades , that there were probably more victims and why none of these had come forward . Horrible to think of but perhaps when he had close proximity to Tom , then Ollie he maybe didn't have to look for other victims .

It felt very " real " . There were no obviously surgically enhanced / botoxed to within an inch of their lives actors . It was also realistic that the main character was also flawed , especially when she had the affair with her friend's husband .

I agree @Reallybadidea

WaitingforStrike · 16/12/2024 07:22

I thought it incredible that the little boy's dad was willing for him to go off to Scotland with an abusive man.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/12/2024 07:24

we dont know who Walt's dad is though

HousedInMySoul · 16/12/2024 07:38

I thought it was really good. How courageous she was to keep going when no one believed her, trying to safeguard any more potential victims.

I don't know if it was courage or just sheer bloody mindedness! I thought the scene when she bashed the wasps' nest was a good analogy for the whole story - she was really hurting herself with her actions but just couldn't stop herself doing it.
I really liked the complexity of the characters, especially Penny. Of course you were rooting for her the whole way through but she really did behave like a dick at times (the affair, taking Walt out of nursery etc)

SabrinaToolmaker · 16/12/2024 09:57

I wondered if he was very careful who he chose - he has all the boys he coaches sports to as cover. They all say he’s great and no issues, but he actually abuses the vulnerable one. Tom has a difficult family background of some kind, it’s not clear but he lived with Penny and Phil at some point. If Tom had threatened to tell someone about what was going on Phil could say well then where are you going to live?

I also wondered if Phil had been grooming Ollie but nothing physical had happened yet. Hence Ollie could honestly say Phil was innocent but also want to protect him as he felt they had a special relationship. I’m not sure though.

NomDePrune · 16/12/2024 11:19

I really liked the whole thing but that last scene at the beach jarred a bit.
One minute they're at a party then they decide to go surfing - whose idea was it? When there's no surf. And they are not exactly buddies at this point. The timing was really odd.

And like a pp said, no way she could have moved his body, let alone got it on the front of her kayak.

napody · 16/12/2024 13:26

MrsLargeEmbodied · 16/12/2024 07:24

Yeah but presumably Tom at least thought it was him (in character as a biological man)? Or even if not, was very close to him and a father figure? Good point @waitingforstrike

I don't think they ever suggested it was anyone else? He certainly played the role of a father to the boy.
