Tom is female.

Glad someone has cleared up what was on the photo. I paused the screen and could only make out a blurred arm.

I really enjoyed the whole thing except the ending.

She would have struggled to drag his body out of the sea before trying to resuscitate him and there's no way she could have launched the canoe and got his body on it too.

Story and acting was amazing though.

I agree and enjoyed the whole thing - great story and great acting.
I know nothing about kyaking so was happy to believe she could have dragged the body and got it on a kyak.

Tom is female.

Eh?

Lottapianos · 01/12/2024 08:39

I loved it too. Agree about the brilliant acting all round. I really didn't know whether he was guilty or not until very far in. Penny was a hell of a complex character and did some truly terrible things. A refreshing change from stereotypical 'mum' or 'wronged wife' characters

Little Walt was absolutely gorgeous 🥰

Workiskilligme · 01/12/2024 08:41

@Azertyuio123 Tom is a female. She is a transman actor.

EachandEveryone · 01/12/2024 22:22

One thing that bugs me about the ending is the fact that none of her friends will know she was right all along.

KnutsfordCityLimits · 02/12/2024 06:55

That's what I thought @EachandEveryone - particularly her daughter - plus isn't there a risk she'll be done for his drowning? It seems her life is still in bits.

Pat888 · 02/12/2024 08:21

Felt sorry for the daughter -lost her DF and DGM

And she will never know that he wasnt exactly a "D"F, or that her son probably escaped a childhood of sexual abuse. She's lucky- she'll just never know it!

Livinginaclock · 02/12/2024 16:49

I watched it all earlier this week, great to see a thread about it without a half literate person insisting no-one should binge.
Anyway, it was great, I absolutely think he abused Ollie, though I didn't suspect Tom.
I think Grace was perhaps in denial, no one wants to believe that about a parent.
Loved seeing a normal looking older woman on screen too, I pretty much have her body.

GinaDreamsofRunningAway · 02/12/2024 17:28

Does anyone think there will be a second series? After the Party Two? Where everyone finds out that he is dead and there is an investigation into what happened to him? It could still be called 'After the Party' as the killing took place while the leaving party was happening. 🤔

Just a thought.

Lottapianos · 02/12/2024 17:29

'Loved seeing a normal looking older woman on screen too, I pretty much have her body.'

She's a gorgeous woman, both face and body. Really great to see wrinkles, not Botox and fillers!

I've always thought Peter Mullan was quite hot too 😉

I hated the affair though I did like the jumping into the sea after the kiss, kind of dramatic embarrassed response I could imagine doing!
In RL after an abuser dies is often when people finally open up about what they did. So that might happen. Him being dead is good but it doesn't help Tom deal with the abuse (or anyone else he groomed).
I did not realise Tom was played by a transman - obviously the character wasn't trans as he fathered two children.

EachandEveryone · 02/12/2024 17:40

He reminds me so much of Brian Cox

Blimeyitscold · 02/12/2024 18:29

The girl playing the daughter (Tara Canton) was superb.

I enjoyed it but thought it was a bit slow. Did realise they are a couple in real life though! Also didnt see the relevance of her being a nude model?

I think it's very relevant. I worked with somebody who was a nude model . When we got a new manager , they could not get their head around the fact that that not everyone strives for things they wanted ( in terms of outside interests) and targeted them and managed them out . We very much became a clone like workforce that had to fit the aesthetic of what the manager valued .

I think it was relevant because she had to work harder for her suspicions to be acknowledged because she want ' respectable ' enough .

I rolled my eyes when she did that Grin
Dramatic behaviour tends to get on my nerves a bit!

It's probably to show her hypocrisy. She was having a go at Grace over wearing a top that only showed cleavage, despite Grace's powerful argument. Then shortly after that scene, Penny was shown as a nude model. The movie was probably showing that she was a typical hypocritical and contradictory lunatic feminist. Thankfully most women aren't crazy enough to be feminists.

😂

Although inadvertently 'womanlywimmin's completely idiotic point has made me reflect on a great point made by the series. One of the ways sexual predators hide in plain sight. By discrediting those that see them for what they are: accusing them of being mad, hypocritical, inconsistent etc. Everyone's complex and multifaceted. I'm glad they didn't shy away from reflecting that.

Netaporter · 03/12/2024 09:55

Just finished. Had to say I was disappointed when she apologised because she obviously had a gut reaction to what she thought to be true. Brilliant acting. I love Peter Mulan in pretty much everything. Particularly the Ozarks when the hillbilly wife kills him with coffee 😂

I don’t think there will be a season 2

I agree- a season 2 wouldn't work at all. It was essentially a very long, very well made film.

SabrinaToolmaker · 03/12/2024 11:57

I thought it was really good. I did clock the actor playing Tom was trans and that made me wonder whether that would be part of the storyline. For example Penny was right but he abused a girl not a boy and they later transitioned.

Did anyone else wonder if Ollie was Walt’s father?

EachandEveryone · 03/12/2024 14:16

Yes I did it was a knowing look that passed between him and Grace.
