I binge watched this yesterday, found it a really good watch, though the ending was a bit wishy-washy.

What did others think?

I found it pretty unlikely that they could go to all those lengths, follow all those highly niche clues, and find someone who a) wasn't Lucan but b) had such a strong match on facial recognition and c) spouted so many "appropriate" things like going to Eton (unless the edit just filtered out him saying dozens of things that didn't fit).

And in the end, I thought it was odd that they took one old man's word for it that it was a different person, whilst not taking the same verification steps!

Very sad overall. Especially the ex boyfriend of Sandra who asked her to swap date night, she wasn't even supposed to be there.

I think he did escape to Africa, possibly now dead - or possibly the guy in Australia.

He's just not interested in any information which contradicts his narrative.

And that, to paraphrase Miss Lydgate in Gaudy Night, is the mark of the unsound scholar.

I found this documentary fascinating. Whoever the old man is, he has a strange back story. I can’t decide if he’s a fantasist, a shady character with something else to hide, cognitively impaired or if he is actually Lord Lucan. I really wanted him to be Lucan.

It’s pretty appalling that an old man can be door stepped like that by a production company with cameras . It’s really unethical.

He would have to give permission for the documentary to be shown.

I doubt it.

I sent all my findings to Neil and this was his reply, just received:

"Good job well done . I have done all this ,but that's nothing compared with other stuff . Thank you though . Neil"

As illustrated by his reply to my new research.

Well, that was a big waste of my time, then!

TheMoonismadeofcheese · 12/11/2024 14:06

If he’s done it all already why was he making this documentary?

He's an idiot.
What a tosser.
I'm going to send him a link to this thread.

OMG his website!

Couldn't be have had it proofread before he published it?

FFS I can't cope with bad syntax.

I doubt it.

If you are filmed in your house you need to agree for it to be broadcast. Pretty sure you need written consent.

That’s unkind, he’s obviously deeply troubled, unfortunately for him the killer was famous, if it’d been Joe Bloggs instead of Lord Lucan no one would feed his obsession and he’d have to drop it.

TheMoonismadeofcheese · 12/11/2024 18:22

His wife is going to leave him if he doesn’t watch it. Poor woman.

I wouldn’t read it that way - it wasn’t a waste of your time as we (readers of this thread) enjoyed reading your discoveries.
I’m fairly sure there was a lot of information that wasn’t included in that documentary and that in all likelihood the BBC had done the same research as you did but for whatever reason it didn’t fit their narrative so they didn’t show it. Or maybe they didn’t want to say too much more about the old man’s personal details for his privacy.

I strongly also suspect that Neil didn’t have a lot of say in the final edit of that documentary. And there’s a lot more to tell that we don’t know yet.

Phase2 · 12/11/2024 18:53

So the theory is that Lucan/ Chris Bell stole Derek Crowthers identity and life history including name changes. Or that he isn't Chris Bell.
I think aspinall and Tati helped the escape after he spent the night at the Maxwell Martins and he moved to S Africa. No chris bell involved.

LivesinLondon2000 · 12/11/2024 19:00

@Phase2
Yes the theory is that he stole Derek Crowther’s identity at some point (maybe many years) after his initial disappearance.

I think most people still think he would have escaped to Africa first though and only moved to Australia later

NukaCola · 12/11/2024 19:20

Oh dear me that website...

It's the rantings of an obsessive. Neil needs counselling and therapy, the whole thing reminds me of conspiracy theory websites. A clear agenda, dismissing any other information out of hand as he did with the research done by @Ladyof2024, bad spelling, bad grammar.

I am so uncomfortable with the BBC exploiting this man and his distress/obsession. And also exploiting the very elderly man in Australia whose only "crime" appears to have led a bohemian life and who changed his name several times.

PeachRose1986 · 12/11/2024 19:20

Obviously NB knew all this about DC already. Anyone can find that info.. His evidence is compelling. Definitely not a ‘tosser’ (oddly strong and immature opinion to reach about someone you've never met).

Thank you, I was trying to get it straight. I'm on board for the first bit but not the old man is Lucan.

LivesinLondon2000 · 12/11/2024 19:34

@Phase2
Same. It’s pretty easy to imagine he went to Africa initially and spent a couple of decades there before moving elsewhere e.g. Australia.

But I’m also not convinced that he’s the old man. Neil seems sure though so I’d love to see if he has any other evidence. I don’t think he’s mad/deluded at all - there are so many weird coincidences that you do have to wonder - confirmation bias is very powerful however and sometimes coincidences are just that.

Phase2 · 12/11/2024 19:36

@LivesinLondon2000 I don't think he's mad, although I do think the pp has found a fairly convincing rebuttal. It's not easy when he's found people who believe him and people who are sketchy.
