Our Flag Means Death - Thread 5: Ahoy! Surrender! You have no chance of escape!

Hi all!! Roll up for thread 5 and join our chat about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more than a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome! It’s utterly brilliant, and some of us are still in the grips of obsession many months after the last episode aired (the last for now, that is… We live in hope🙏)

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Go watch it (on BBC iPlayer), then come back and join us.😀

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. It’s structured like a theatre production with a prologue and 3 acts. The 2nd lead arrives (briefly) in episode 3, and in episode 4 (the start of Act 1) the tone changes and the main story begins. You need to give it at least that long. It gets better and better and it still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

(I’ve kept this spoiler free, but if you scroll down you will no doubt find many, so beware!)

Well, Spotify Wrapped for the past year came out today. DD was keen to get at my phone when I picked her up to see my stats.

I am very proud to announce that I am in the top 0.005% of people who listened to High on a Rocky Ledge this year (my most listened to song). The rest of my top 5 also includes Perfect Day and two songs from favourite OFMD fan edits. Actually three quarters of my top 20 are OFMD related. I have to say I'm very happy with my results 😁

Mine was similar 🤣

Apparently May was my ‘pirate string quartet wave’ 😂

🤣 Where did they get those descriptions? I mean what on earth are they classing as a pirate string quartet?? Mine are much more sensible, but I love that my 5 favourite artists include Moondog, J.S. Bach and the cast of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. 🤣

@TriceratopsRocks

I have no idea but I feel exposed!

(correction it was phase not wave)

I don't play with my string quartet any more but the 80 year old cellist is a good laugh and would almost certainly dress up as a pirate. He'd be a very distinguished one!

lizziesaurusx · 05/12/2024 21:58

I came on here specifically to see whether anyone had posted about Spotify Wrapped! Proud to be in the top 0.05% of listeners to Seabird (I bet the rest of that 0.05% are OMFD obsessives too, or maybe Hunt for the Wilderpeople). 7 of top 10 and 14 of my top 20 are OFMD related which is wild considering I only started watching in mid-April. And May was my Royalcore Soft Piano Classical phase - all OFMD too, of course.

Don't sell yourself short, @lizziesaurusx . You're in the top 0.005% not 0.05% - much more exclusive 😁.

I noticed I have 3 different versions of Gnossienne 5 in my top 25. I thought 9th favourite song seemed a bit low. That explains it! I'm enjoying my wrapped top 100 songs playlist too.

OP posts:
lizziesaurusx · 05/12/2024 23:25

Oh I hadn't even spotted that! Thank you, though I'm now swerving from proud to slightly embarrassed at my keenness. Gnossienne 5 was (appropriately) no 5 for me, but just the one version. And Because the Night was no 2.

I seem to remember dancing to Because the Night at Heathrow? Which is surprising. My memory is now apparently so dreadful that several times now, after reading a new fic, I've discovered I "already left kudos here". I would have sworn 100% that I've never seen them before in my life. I suppose the upside is that I can keep discovering my favourites over and over again 🤣

Just been having a little catch up with David’s postings on Bluesky ( I’m not on twitter but I know he’s been active there previously). He’s certainly still keeping hints/hopes up for a network to pick up OFMD. As there is a news article today about the new Harry Potter TV series starting filming - and appeasing JK Rowling was one of the theories as to why we were cancelled - it may be time to ratchet up engagement again…. Netflix programme request page, rewatches, internet searches. After all, if HP is filming all contracts are now signed, so in theory they could reinstate one of their most popular programmes. (Although I’d still prefer it to be picked up elsewhere as HBO Max shafted us 😡)
Rant over 🤣

MrsJellybee · 06/12/2024 16:34

@DJ47 what’s your blue sky handle?

Yellow Mustard just started following me and I feel blessed 🤣

@notbloodyoptimal.bsky.social - what’s yours?

MrsJellybee · 06/12/2024 16:38

@crimsonclover1717.bsky.social

i’ll try and add you. I like bluesky. It’s like starting afresh. Twitter was saturated.

MrsJellybee · 06/12/2024 16:42

@DJ47 i think we’re now mutuals. 🙂

Published yesterday, 10K one-shot (complete). It’s exquisite. Modern AU focusing on Stede and touch. I’m going to go scream into a pillow.

(CW: for Stede’s panic attack. )

Care and happy ending.

That was excellent, @MrsJellybee . Thank you for the link.

As someone who barely ever used Twitter, is Bluesky worth joining? I'm a 'rarely post anything' person (except on here) so I've been resisting opening any new SM accounts that I barely touch. But if there is interesting stuff to read there, then I might.

@DJ47 I've never heard the rumour that our cancellation might be something to do with Harry Potter/JKR specifically. Was that article linked on Bluesky or somewhere else? I would bet money on it not being true though, except in how prioritising spending on an expensive Harry Potter series might require more overall cost cutting. I really don't like that they specifically cut a lot of LGBTQ content, including us, but if I had to blame any individual for that, it'd be Zaslav.

@TriceratopsRocks I did have a Twitter account (I am going to dead-name it from now on as a two-fingers to Musk) so it seemed natural to move over to bluesky. I don’t use it much. It’s really just to see what David’s posting.

It wasn’t a specific article- more of a general suspicion that cost cutting was needed to be able to afford the HP gig. Plus keeping JK Rowling onside by slashing all their LGBTQ content. But it deffo comes down to Zaslav….they wouldn’t have got as far as preproduction for S3 otherwise ☹️

Well I've just watched That Christmas. Our man Rhys was great 😁. Some really nice stories in it too, and Brian Cox was a brilliant Santa 🎅. It wasn't the best animated Christmas film I've seen (I really love Arthur Christmas and Klaus of the more modern ones) but still very enjoyable.

I haven’t watched it yet as trying to get DD to watch it with me. Glad to see Rhys got an ‘And’ credit though. Shows status.

MrsJellybee · 07/12/2024 12:13

Rhys constantly wearing the brown shirt he wore in my fan photo. Clearly it brings back great memories for him 🤣
