Our Flag Means Death - Thread 5: Ahoy! Surrender! You have no chance of escape!

Hi all!! Roll up for thread 5 and join our chat about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more than a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome! It’s utterly brilliant, and some of us are still in the grips of obsession many months after the last episode aired (the last for now, that is… We live in hope🙏)

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Go watch it (on BBC iPlayer), then come back and join us.😀

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. It’s structured like a theatre production with a prologue and 3 acts. The 2nd lead arrives (briefly) in episode 3, and in episode 4 (the start of Act 1) the tone changes and the main story begins. You need to give it at least that long. It gets better and better and it still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

(I’ve kept this spoiler free, but if you scroll down you will no doubt find many, so beware!)

I'm staying in a somewhat posh hotel (just for the one night sadly). I had a lovely binge last night from Uncomfortable in a Married State up to and including This is Happening.

I've had to name change due to the stupid app update. This is phineyj.

All I have to say is OMG. The hair. The clothes. The detail. Such as Con's repetition of "Oh my god" in the 'outrageous flirting with fencing' scene.

Needlenardlenoo · 15/03/2025 07:42

Also Rhys looks great in a wig.

TriceratopsRocks · 15/03/2025 08:03

Oh lucky you! That sounds a wonderful way to spend an evening. I adored it when I got to binge our show in a hotel with a huge TV 😁

I mean, he is actually crying over the perceived horror of whom he thinks is topping who…

RepublicOfPirates · 16/03/2025 08:42

Damn this new update, had to name change as well so there goes SpanishJackie!

TriceratopsRocks · 16/03/2025 13:13

Oh no! That was a great username. I was in the beta and didn't have to name change. Must have got lucky.

I'm actually quite gutted, first world problem eh?

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 16/03/2025 14:52

What's happened with name changes? I still seem to have mine!

MrsJellybee · 16/03/2025 15:55

I don’t use the app so was unaware there were name change issues.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 16/03/2025 16:20

Me neither. I would be sad to lose Carter.

Have you needed to make a new account then? Mumsnet might be able to help if you've lost access to your old one?

Yes a new account. Got a new phone, hence the update , it was a lot of faff setting up etc so I'm just going g to stick with RoP and continue my love for this absolute gem of a show.

Wow!! Siren Events are not only running the June convention at Gatwick (not all guests yet announced) - but have a series of virtual panels coming up in April. Creatives who we don’t usually get to hear from, such as costume design and hair/make up (ie The Wig creator). Amazing so far….. but they have only just gone and announced that the last panel will be with David Jenkins himself!! (Just off to check my bank balance) 😉

Blimey! I have been keeping my eye on that. Was contemplating buying a Gatwick ticket in the next week or so, and then you get a sizeable discount on the virtual convention. I'm busy on the actual day of the virtual convention, but you can watch it on 'catch up', as it were. Incredible that they got David.

Is anyone else contemplating Gatwick? I'm simply hopeless at making decisions but I'm swaying towards going at the moment. I'm very interested in the virtual production convention too - I'd just have to watch it all a couple of days later.

DJ47 · 18/03/2025 23:54

Yes - I’m pretty certain I’m going to go. But as you say need to make a decision before the virtual to get the discount on that one

TriceratopsRocks · 20/03/2025 20:38

Just to say that over the last few days I've listened to the Wilosophy podcast linked just up there a little ⬆️. I found it brilliant. Just a really interesting chat, and if you haven't tried it yet I thoroughly recommend it.

Thanks @MrsJellybee that's a thoughtful interview!

MrsBruin · 23/03/2025 17:29

Meantime, a little bit more reality for your pleasure. No surprise that fact and fiction differ a bit, as we know our show is inclined to be a little fragrant with the truth (thank goodness)!

If anyone is still thinking about attending the New Uni-con (Our Flag event at Gatwick), there will be a flash sale on tickets running from tomorrow until the 31st. This is probably the push I need to get my own!

Confirmed guests are Rubio Qian, David Fane and Nathan Foad, with hopefully one more guest tbc.

Not sure if the sale also extends to the virtual conference too?

@MrsBruinI loved the You're Dead To Me piece on real historical Zheng. I actually thought it demonstrated the show writers were quite respectful to the person and her history, even if they moved her back in time a bit.

TriceratopsRocks · 25/03/2025 19:14

Just sticking this here - it's the web page for the Wee Con, in Edinburgh later this year.
