Are there any other Jilly Cooper fans out there? I feel ridiculously excited about Rivals coming out.

@RupertCampbellsBack just wear a man’s white shirt open at the neck, high heels and a quick squirt of Fracas darling!

AndAllOurYesterdays · 16/10/2024 20:58

I sat down to watch this last weekend after reading the Guardian review and was so disappointed that I had to wait another week. Also a JC fan but some of her writing is a bit of it's time. I remember reading one set in a school and the some of the characters were disturbingly young.

Seagall · 16/10/2024 20:59

Steak and oranges surely?

Or a Cobb salad and an enormous Dover sole, with a bottle of ice cold Chablis

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 16/10/2024 20:59

This fella should've been RCB (Harry Llyod)
More familiar with blonde hair in GoT ......

It’s a shame they’ve cast a minger as RCB. I don’t know what they were thinking.

Super excited! Rivals is my absolute favourite JC novel. I was reading it when I couldn't sleep the night before I got married & again when I was in hospital waiting for a bed to be free for dd2 to make her way into the world.
Highly recommend Marina Hyde on the rest is entertainment on the topic.

I’ve never read any of JC’s books. But today I was listening to Richard Osman & Marina Hyde talk about this adaptation on their podcast (The Rest Is Entertainment) and it sounded so great, I’m about to read Rivals and then I’ll watch.

in case anyone else is interested: podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-rest-is-entertainment/id1718287198?i=1000673090118

Well you need to read Riders first.

I read it in half term when I was 17 and supposed to be revising.

Seagall · 16/10/2024 21:01

I think he looks great - cocky and louche

I think Riders has aged less well than Rivals - he's such an abusive shit in that book.

Manypaws · 16/10/2024 19:29

I won't get over Rupert not being blonde and the handsomest man in England

I won’t get over him looking like Jimmy Nesbitt.

Did a man do the casting?

I mean there’s a lot that does not age well in JC.

He’s a shit who mellows with age, I don’t think that should be sugarcoated.

Tooty78 · 16/10/2024 21:05

I always envision a young Julian Sands as RCB

That's fair, I agree

Me too! It would appear we’re very much in the minority, @Seagall

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 16/10/2024 21:06

I only finished Riders last night.

Zampa · 16/10/2024 21:06

I would have cast Bradley James as RCB myself. (Arthur from Merlin).

I'm so disappointed they didn't do Riders, because of the horses.

Oh, big time. Hated the horse beating in Riders but adore that book. DV in Emily but again, I love the book. It’s not that I don’t or didn’t care - even at the time of reading I hated those bits. But the books were of their time.

I love Jilly’s writing, though. She was funny and smart with it.

Pretty much exactly like this

That is the picture I always use when threads pop up about what RCB should look like! 5

SquirrelSoShiny · 16/10/2024 21:14

I'm looking forward to it but honestly Rupert is underwhelming.

I always fancied Declan more anyway 😍😍😍

Editing to say - I love your thread title OP 😁

TheOnlyAletheia · 16/10/2024 21:16

A young Rupert Everett would have made a cracking Bas Baddingham

SanDimasHighSchoolFootballRules · 16/10/2024 21:17

Rivals is my favourite Jilly Cooper book and I've had this in my calendar for ages. I cannot wait!

I'll get the washing-up machine loaded, slap on some foundation, drench myself in Fracas and pour myself a vodka and orange squash (because I've run out of tonic). I'm sure I've got a quiche in larder as well...

ConstantlyFuriosa · 16/10/2024 21:19

Oh they did , they did
It was maybe 1995ish
Micheal Praed as Jake and Marcus Gilbert as Rupert CB

Nice horses though

It’s only when he died I saw so many pics of him. In his younger years he was so, so handsome!

Yes you can see why the queen fell for him. Whereas it was a bit harder to guess when he was in his late 90s :D
