Are there any other Jilly Cooper fans out there? I feel ridiculously excited about Rivals coming out.

For those who have finished it, at what point does it end?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/10/2024 10:06

I think that counts as a spoiler, really? Many of us have read the book, yes, but that would give away the ending of this series both to people here who haven't read the book and people who have but don't yet know how they finished this series.

Isn't there another thread for discussing the series where spoilers are fine?

This is the spoiler thread:

www.mumsnet.com/talk/telly_addicts/5190052-jilly-coopers-rivals-on-disney-episode-1-discussion-thread-with-spoilers-open-the-pouilly-fume-curl-up-on-the-sofa-with-a-lurcher-puppy-here

but nobody is spoiling the ending on there yet either!! It doesn't cover the entirety of the book anyway so definitely another series to come!

Only seen ep1 and want it to last but loving it so far. Anyone else a poldark fan who noticed Aidan turner/declan’s house was also frequented by him in poldark!

Yes! Its the same house, Chavenage House. Loving this adaptation, although agree about the men, RCB casting not right but he'll pull it off.

OldTinHat · 20/10/2024 10:38

I binged it all on Friday. It was absolutely delightful/inappropriate/fantastic!

My friends didn't know about it and our large group chat has been very quiet since they all started watching too!

Oh I wondered if it was the same house used in Poldark!! It’s a great house!

Parkmybentley · 20/10/2024 10:46

Episode 4 and #notmyrupert has finally grown on me. Have to limit myself to 1 or 1 and a half episodes daily, don't want it to end!

thenightsky · 20/10/2024 18:41

I loved the shooting scene with Monica describing how long it takes her to deal with a cock.

In fact, I think Monica is my favourite character so far.

bryceQ · 20/10/2024 19:30

I was so skeptical of RCB but I loved it all. Fab casting for everyone. Didn't want it to end.

Mirabai · 20/10/2024 21:37

I’m 10 mins in and it’s ace. Don’t even mind that RCB is unattractive, I sort of don’t associate him with RCB in the book, Declan is cheering me up right now.

gettingolderbutcooler · 20/10/2024 21:44

@justforthisnow
I think he'll be 'pulling it off' every episode.

RedHelenB · 20/10/2024 22:06

David Tenbant is such a good actor.

Grumpysawus · 23/10/2024 23:06

We’ve just finished it 😱. When are we allowed to discuss the final episode?

Grumpysawus · 23/10/2024 23:18

But without any spoilers, I loved the casting, even RCB - he may not look like the RCB in my head but he definitely embraced the spirit!! Loved the cameo in the restaurant as well 😍

CoolShoeshine · 20/10/2024 00:23

#notmyrupert He looks like Robbie Rottern! However I do think the actor has captured the character incredibly well, he just doesn't look the part from the neck upwards! Quite frankly who could live up to playing that character thoigh? I do love the Taggie actress and Lizzie.is wow.
Does anyone know the theme music? I've got a vague memory from the book that the Rivals is an opera reference- Gilbert and Sullivan perhaps?

The Rivals reference comes from the song “Green grow the rushes O”. I think Caitlin sang it somewhere early on in the book.

There were three companies going for the franchise in the book, obviously dropped from the TV adaption.

God I’m such a nerd when it comes to JC books, too much repeat reading as a teen!

TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack · 24/10/2024 09:50

Oh I see @ChessieFL got there before me with the thread link, she always was ahead of me (but I bagged Rupert so there!)

ChessieFL · 24/10/2024 10:42

You’re welcome to Rupert!!!Grin

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 16/10/2024 19:51

The late D of E put me in mind when it comes to RCB, in his younger years when he was really fair.

Matt Smith played Prince Philip brilliantly in the Crown. I think he would have made a wonderful Rupert.

ChessieFL · 24/10/2024 10:42

Ha ha, you're definitely welcome to Ricky and Bart!!

ChessieFL · 24/10/2024 11:18

Not really much of a choice, is it?! Most of the men in Jilly’s books aren’t really a catch when it boils down to it, even if they are meant to be every woman’s dream!

True!

Billy - alcoholic, hopeless with money, handsome but in Rupert's shadow
Tony - thug, ruthless, nasty
Ricky - emotionally stunted, damaged
Jake - emotionally stunted & damaged, physically damaged, horrible to fat Tory
Freddie - decent, clever but still cheats on Valerie
Luke - swoon!
Red - brute, vengeful
Seb & Dommie: sex mad, collapsing with laughter all the times at unfunny things
Bas: PHOAR but only because Luke Pasquilino, the character is a rake
Bart: treats women as possessions, ruthless

Rupert, the handsomest man in England and utterly irresistible, Mecca for all women. Plus he's rich as Croesus, doesn't give a shit, great in bed but underneath it all he needed was the love of a good, much younger woman (Taggie) who wouldn't challenge him. <eye roll but I still LOVE HIM!>

Notonthestairs · 24/10/2024 13:00

That is an excellent summary @TheSecondMrsCampbellBlack

Luke is the best, most well adjusted male character.

Notonthestairs · 24/10/2024 13:01

Although I have a soft spot for Seb Burrows (much more sensible choice Tag!)
