The Hardacres is a sweeping rags to riches story that follows the lives, loves and fortunes of the working class Hardacre family as they move from a grimy fish dock to a vast country estate in 1890’s Yorkshire.

The new series is based on CL Skelton’s best-selling series of novels ‘The Hardacre Saga’.

The six-part drama is set in 1890s Yorkshire, and is based on a series of novels by CL Skelton, telling the rags-to-riches tale of the titular working-class family.

A bold, gutsy ensemble family drama full of heart, The Hardacres places an ordinary family in an extraordinary position and explores the age-old question – can money ever buy true happiness?

The Hardacre family consists of Claire Cooper (The Continental, The Peripheral) and Liam McMahon (Hunger, The Secret, Warrior Nun) as loving married couple Mary and Sam Hardacre, who land on hard times following an accident at work on the docks, which leaves them unemployed and broke.

Meanwhile, a synopsis for the first episode reads: "After an unfortunate accident befalls dock worker Sam Hardacre, he and his family lose their jobs at the docks and must race to find work or else end up on the streets.

"His wife Mary, daughter Liza and mother-in-law Ma venture to the gilded halls of country estate Thornton Hall in search of work."

Alongside, Julie Graham (Time, Ridley, Penance), starring as Mary’s wily mother, Ma, and their three kids, Joe, Liza, and Harry, played by Adam Little (Ackley Bridge, Coronation Street), newcomer Shannon Lavelle and Zak Ford-Williams(Better)

the family band together to think fast with a business venture that will free them from their humble existence on the North Yorkshire Coast and catapult them into high society.

Also joining the series are Holly Sturton (The School for Good and Evil) as AdellaFitzherbert, Cathy Belton (Miss Scarlet & The Duke,The Catch, Philomena) as Lady Emma and Owen Roe (Michael Collins, Vikings, Penny Dreadful) as George, making up the well to do Fitzherbert Family and new neighbours of The Hardacres. Ingrid Craigie (Blood, Blackshore, You Are Not My Mother) is housekeeper Mrs Dryden, with Siobhan O’Kelly (The Tourist S2) as Lena Temple, and Sarah Agha as Betsy Temple and Taheen Modak (The Bay) as Calum Saunders.

Well she didn't hold back when she was having a go at Lady Emma! 😂

True but the way that she did it was still quite classy?

I've just begun watching this week. "What does that even mean" probably wouldn't have been said in the 1890s.

HelenInHeels · 25/02/2025 23:45

Sam Hardaker isn't a very Irish name! Yorkshire on the other hand ...

purpleme12 · 25/02/2025 23:57

I'm not sure any of it is truly realistic 🤣

I loved it as well, I do like a period type drama and from what I remember, it was easy watching which I also like

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/11/2025 12:14

I must admit, I’ve forgotten the plot lol. I remember they became rich by investing I think and doing something with fish and everyone looked down their noses at them

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/11/2025 14:20

Yes they did. Their daughter I think was going to run off with another man but they wanted to marry the neighbours son - I think

will need to recap s1

Why far fetched ?

Just the characters I think. I find it verging on the comedic. I do like it though. The houses, the snobbery, the family, trying to fit in . I suppose it's a bit like an east riding Bridgerton. Or an updated, just a bit further south, When the Boat Comes In. Or Catherine Cookson . With a hint of Shameless. It's multifaceted and totally farfetched.
