The Hardacres is a sweeping rags to riches story that follows the lives, loves and fortunes of the working class Hardacre family as they move from a grimy fish dock to a vast country estate in 1890’s Yorkshire.

The new series is based on CL Skelton’s best-selling series of novels ‘The Hardacre Saga’.

The six-part drama is set in 1890s Yorkshire, and is based on a series of novels by CL Skelton, telling the rags-to-riches tale of the titular working-class family.

A bold, gutsy ensemble family drama full of heart, The Hardacres places an ordinary family in an extraordinary position and explores the age-old question – can money ever buy true happiness?

The Hardacre family consists of Claire Cooper (The Continental, The Peripheral) and Liam McMahon (Hunger, The Secret, Warrior Nun) as loving married couple Mary and Sam Hardacre, who land on hard times following an accident at work on the docks, which leaves them unemployed and broke.

Meanwhile, a synopsis for the first episode reads: "After an unfortunate accident befalls dock worker Sam Hardacre, he and his family lose their jobs at the docks and must race to find work or else end up on the streets.

"His wife Mary, daughter Liza and mother-in-law Ma venture to the gilded halls of country estate Thornton Hall in search of work."

Alongside, Julie Graham (Time, Ridley, Penance), starring as Mary’s wily mother, Ma, and their three kids, Joe, Liza, and Harry, played by Adam Little (Ackley Bridge, Coronation Street), newcomer Shannon Lavelle and Zak Ford-Williams(Better)

the family band together to think fast with a business venture that will free them from their humble existence on the North Yorkshire Coast and catapult them into high society.

Also joining the series are Holly Sturton (The School for Good and Evil) as AdellaFitzherbert, Cathy Belton (Miss Scarlet & The Duke,The Catch, Philomena) as Lady Emma and Owen Roe (Michael Collins, Vikings, Penny Dreadful) as George, making up the well to do Fitzherbert Family and new neighbours of The Hardacres. Ingrid Craigie (Blood, Blackshore, You Are Not My Mother) is housekeeper Mrs Dryden, with Siobhan O’Kelly (The Tourist S2) as Lena Temple, and Sarah Agha as Betsy Temple and Taheen Modak (The Bay) as Calum Saunders.

Am enjoying this , not what I'd normally watch but a nice easy watch.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2024 15:53

I can't think how else they can expand this

He still wants to work

Doesn't want to laze about doing nothing

If he's bored he can pop to my house, I would keep him busy.

Typically they also have a crippled son

So a heavy box fell on his hand as he pushed someone else away ?

The actor is disabled, rather them having a 'crippled' son. The actor has appeared in other dramas where there is no requirement to be either able-bodied or disabled.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2024 20:01

Sure I read somewhere that they changed the book

They made the sons older so can work and no ma or Daughter

The crippled son comment I meant no harm but as in another mouth to feed who can't work at the docks

But sure he wasn't like that in the books - from what I read on some article

Daft but enjoyable.

It's so bad it's good 🙄🫢

It reminds me of the Victoria Wood Red Nose Day sketches parts 1 AND 2 !! Uptown Downstairs Abbey 😁 cracks me up every time I watch it.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/10/2024 10:59

I'm loving it. I need a nice easy watch at the moment. I wish it was all available to binge as my DH is away and he would hate it.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/10/2024 12:42

I think it's formulaic and utterly cliché, not to mention quite hammy, but I'm enjoying it 😀 I like seeing people get their come-uppance when they haven't been nice, like the gamekeeper. I like the costumes and scenery.

They made most of their money, not from expanding their business, but because their accountant or lawyer or whoever he is, invested in a gold mine for them and it struck gold, so presumably that explains the marvellous riches.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/10/2024 16:25

True. They got money via shares basically

The duchess enjoyed herrings

Nice to see the housekeeper get shafted over the food

Poor other manager Fred ? Being blamed for the money. I think the son Did feel bad and was going to put it back after the apology but obv not in time

And the poor snobby lady who was trying to take the credit over the flowers and food and money

Shame on her

But now Mary has some new friends

The premise of this is right up my street but I gave up on it 15 minutes in last night . It's so boring .

JewelleryCat · 22/10/2024 09:53

I hope Joe owns up and says he set Fred up. It’s gentle tv which is boring for some but it’s nice to have some gentle tv I think

Mary did look in her element when she was doing that fish race so maybe they’ll find that living in the big house isn’t all it’s cracked up to be and move back and be happier (my theory, not a spoiler)

Clawdy · 22/10/2024 12:59

Yes, I hope Joe owns up too, but that would be a huge thing for him to admit doing. Poor Fred.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/10/2024 13:36

Yes I hope he does as well

dollybird · 22/10/2024 21:49

I thought Joe was being pathetic. I hope he owns up too, but not sure he's got the guts.

It was good to see Joe change his mind, but will he be able to rectify the situation? Will we see Harry again?

I've got my eye on the Fitzherbert girl, Lady Adella, she's got plans for Joe I reckon, that age old mixture of a penniless title and new money from the adjoining estate. Is it adjoining? they're neighbours any way. What her mother will have to say about that would probably sour the milk.

I can see Mary becoming friendly with their cook, who's obviously being kept in her place by Mrs Dryden. Who'd want to work under her 🙁Mary is going to bring some fresh ideas to the charity circle and more kindness I think.

Blondeshavemorefun · 27/10/2024 15:07

Agree @martinisforeveryone

Not really sure where the story can go tbh but I'm enjoying
