The Hardacres is a sweeping rags to riches story that follows the lives, loves and fortunes of the working class Hardacre family as they move from a grimy fish dock to a vast country estate in 1890’s Yorkshire.

The new series is based on CL Skelton’s best-selling series of novels ‘The Hardacre Saga’.

The six-part drama is set in 1890s Yorkshire, and is based on a series of novels by CL Skelton, telling the rags-to-riches tale of the titular working-class family.

A bold, gutsy ensemble family drama full of heart, The Hardacres places an ordinary family in an extraordinary position and explores the age-old question – can money ever buy true happiness?

The Hardacre family consists of Claire Cooper (The Continental, The Peripheral) and Liam McMahon (Hunger, The Secret, Warrior Nun) as loving married couple Mary and Sam Hardacre, who land on hard times following an accident at work on the docks, which leaves them unemployed and broke.

Meanwhile, a synopsis for the first episode reads: "After an unfortunate accident befalls dock worker Sam Hardacre, he and his family lose their jobs at the docks and must race to find work or else end up on the streets.

"His wife Mary, daughter Liza and mother-in-law Ma venture to the gilded halls of country estate Thornton Hall in search of work."

Alongside, Julie Graham (Time, Ridley, Penance), starring as Mary’s wily mother, Ma, and their three kids, Joe, Liza, and Harry, played by Adam Little (Ackley Bridge, Coronation Street), newcomer Shannon Lavelle and Zak Ford-Williams(Better)

the family band together to think fast with a business venture that will free them from their humble existence on the North Yorkshire Coast and catapult them into high society.

Also joining the series are Holly Sturton (The School for Good and Evil) as AdellaFitzherbert, Cathy Belton (Miss Scarlet & The Duke,The Catch, Philomena) as Lady Emma and Owen Roe (Michael Collins, Vikings, Penny Dreadful) as George, making up the well to do Fitzherbert Family and new neighbours of The Hardacres. Ingrid Craigie (Blood, Blackshore, You Are Not My Mother) is housekeeper Mrs Dryden, with Siobhan O’Kelly (The Tourist S2) as Lena Temple, and Sarah Agha as Betsy Temple and Taheen Modak (The Bay) as Calum Saunders.

I don't have it to hand now - I looked at it on my phone earlier and now I'm on my laptop - but The Independent reviewer absolutely slated it and I could see why. I didn't disagree with anything s/he said but I enjoyed it.

I agree that it's very Catherine Cook adaptations but speeded up. The misery was shortlived and then they were very rich and I loved that. Instant gratification! I have a soft spot for this sort of thing because my my mum loved Catherine Cookson and they were among the first adult books I read. Then in the eighties they did a prime time adaptation of The Mallen Streak which seemed very hot to me back then. I was a young teenager though so I'd probably find it very tame now.

Oh and I was knackered when it started so thought I'd give it about ten minutes, see if I liked it and then watch it on catch up. I'd had immunotherapy earlier which is about a million times better than chemotherapy but the side effect that's doing for me is exhaustion. But! I watched all of it because it was comforting and frankly a little bit silly, but warm and just what I wanted. It woke me up and I watched the whole episode. I'm looking forward to the next and hoping to save it until next week so I have a weekly something to look forward to.

You can't actually binge it anyway!

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/10/2024 22:40

I know 😂😂😂😂

Why I bloody love ch5 stuff

Clawdy · 08/10/2024 22:40

Enjoyed it! It reminded me of the cosy dramas of the 1970s, and I loved that ending as they marched into the Hall!

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/10/2024 22:53

The housekeeper is going to hate serving her

Tho isn't it unusual they didn't all go with the former owners

😂 I'm with you
I'm old school like you 😂

MouseMinge · 09/10/2024 01:19

I didn't realise you couldn't binge but I'm glad. It's nice to dig right into a series sometimes. I did it last week with Nobody Wants This on Netflix and then stopped because I was loving it but wanted to draw the pleasure out a little. I'm now looking forward to six Mondays of The Hardacres. I do enjoy bingeing but I also enjoy TV the old fashioned way.

WillowTit · 09/10/2024 05:24

sounds like a catherine cookson

WillowTit · 09/10/2024 05:27

Lellamir · 07/10/2024 23:04

Oh, I was expecting more from that. It felt like watching one of those 1990s, daytime dramas from Catherine Cookson!

that is what i got from the trailer

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/10/2024 06:50

We are very similar @purpleme12

I didn't think I'd like this but I do . All very far fetched . Expect £249 grand is millions these day and they made it so quickly and had their own 'shop' !

It's all a bit of fun , quite nice to sit down and not have to wonder who the murderer is !

Is the sound weird for anyone else? Found the beginning the music was too loud couldn’t hear the talking

Me neither, it was ridiculous , right up there with filming an entire long scene in the total dark and mumbling/whispering e.g. Jamaica Inn…

Pirri · 10/10/2024 21:47

Just watched this. I like the premise and the plot but the acting is dreadful, never heard such appalling Yorkshire accents.
I'm wondering whether it's deliberately bad?

dollybird · 10/10/2024 22:00

I haven't watched it yet, but Ch5 are pitching it as a more period variation on All Creatures, which I LOVE, so hoping it'll be good.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/10/2024 16:46

I really enjoyed it

Equally most tv things are enjoyable to me

Haven't watched last night's yet, but enjoyed the first episode. Not really sure where they go from here though. The rags to riches but could've been the whole series.

Blondeshavemorefun · 15/10/2024 11:20

Yes did seem they rushed e1 from being poor. Selling fish and being rich

But guess now they learn how to act rich
