Just caught up. They seem like a good bunch overall but Luba/Nick and Paul/Karen don’t seem overly fond of one another yet. I’m expecting both couples to be early boots anyway.

I like most of the pairings but I wish Chris had been paired with someone like Lauren, Jovita or Kayta instead as I think their choreography and teaching styles would have worked better for him. Especially with Lauren not getting a partner this year!

I’m gutted to see Lauren and Carlos benched as I think they’re both excellent. I know Kai is loved here but I’m not that bothered about him being benched, sorry!

It’s great to see Amy back and looking so well. That hairstyle really suits her. I think she will do well with JB.

I was looking forward to finally having a good female same sex pairing this year so it’s a shame that we don’t have that but hopefully next year we’ll get a good contender!

Strictly is having a terrible effect on everyone's maths.
The Guardian confidently said how shocking it was that there were only five women contestants and ten men, (screen shot before they correct it), and the BBC News announcer has just said in the headlines that it's returned for its twentieth series (which happened in 2022).

SCD '24 #3: The Vengabus has arrived in the studio... (SPOILER FREE)

Was tonight live or pre-recorded?

Redcrayons · 15/09/2024 00:08

Pre recorded.

Lentilweaver · 15/09/2024 03:20

I couldn't tell most of them apart. Seem to be a lot of blokey men . I confused Pete Wicks with Joe Wicks.

Very sad to see Lauren not given a partner after doing so well with Krishnan last year. I would rather have seen Dianne or Luba benched. Ok with Neil coming back; they need someone for the older women. Though still wish Kai had not been benched.
Amy looks very cute with the short hair.

WhatILoved · 15/09/2024 03:55

Aww Kai and Lauren were my faves!

Lentilweaver · 15/09/2024 03:58

I really hope a woman wins again.

I know she has a snowball's chance in hell, but Punam looked rather good. I also liked Montell and Toyah.

Poor Karen stuck with no hopers year after year.

I don't know enough about any of them to identify the ringer. Is it the one with the new pro Michelle?

Illjusthavethebreadsticks · 15/09/2024 05:09

I think Wynnes jokes are going to wear thin quite quickly!

KatLiz · 15/09/2024 06:10

Once the terrible bus intro was out of the way I actually enjoyed the show, so I'm feeling more interested than I expected this year.
Favourites so far - Chris, Punam, Tasha, Sarah and JB seem nice . Of those I only knew of Chris and Sarah before the show, but I always end up liking people I'm not familiar with.
Surprises - Pete Wicks, I fully expected to find him insufferable, but actually his dry humour and grumpy guy thing was entertaining, so I think he's going to grow on me.
Negatives - will miss seeing Kai and Lauren this year, and I'm not a Merson fan (even my husband who's a huge Arsenal fan thought he was an awful choice for the show).
Overall though I'm looking forward to this series now.

Gooseysgirl · 15/09/2024 06:41

I'm baffled about Kai and Lauren being benched - both great partners to their celebs and a real asset to the show. Personally I would have benched boring Gorka again and left Michelle where she was in favour of Lauren.

billysboy · 15/09/2024 06:58

Lauren is one of the world’s beautiful people
a shame that Kai is also left out
Merson to go first

DearGoldFish · 15/09/2024 07:02

RedToothBrush · 14/09/2024 21:22

How long will it take Jamie Borthwick to shag Michelle? They so needed to just get a room tonight!

high culture indeed! 😆

The lack of women means the first two out are likely to be boys.

Merson is the set up to go first but if there's someone shit with no fan base they could be in trouble (Tom Dean the swimmer basically. He's gangly and the flappy footed gangly ones always go early). Neither has one of the more popular dancers.

Chris and Wynne have been given two of the best professionals who are also popular in their own right. They are looking at Wynne to be Ed Balls-like. And Chris is the life and soul so he'll be in til at least week 5 or 6 at least before it starts being tough and getting serious.

Toya wants to be Debbie McGee. She's not. Early to mid series exit. Punam likewise. She will do ok and Gorka is good but the Glasgow issue plus GPing plus no fan base isn't going to get her far.

The obvious contenders are definitely Montell, Shayne and JB I think. They've been totally set up. Nancy wants to win badly and Shayne is very competitive. Montell has a good match with Johannes. And JB and BBC darling Amy are not going to exit too early. Jamie will do ok. He's the popular young couple entry. He could go either way but I suspect he'll do reasonably well maybe mid to late series. His partner hasn't the experience and I think they will get distracted by shagging. (Genuinely. The rumours are going to start quickly on that one).

Tbh I find a lot of it a set up. The pairing definitely are. Then if they like someone and think they might go out they give them a good tune and magically they've got the Charleston that week rather than something dull like a waltz or technical and Latin. Every single time. Conversely you know you are doomed if you get a shit costume and a dire song.

The producers have a rough plan of who they want to get how far and how far they are likely to get before the series even start. Pretty much every week you know who is going out that week and next.

After twenty years of it, I have to say I find it frustrating and having jumped the shark. It's something we used to always watch but last year we barely watched it and I can't say I probably will this time round either. There's not really anyone who particularly interests me. Wynne is fun and the chaos Chris will cause will be interesting (and will also piss people off by week 3). But they aren't enough. The competitive contenders are all a bit meh tbh.

I hope it proves more entertaining than I think at this stage even if I don't watch it!

DearGoldFish · 15/09/2024 08:28

@RedToothBrush you have given this a disturbing amount of time and thought!

Romeiswheretheheartis · 15/09/2024 08:43

Sarah must feel she's not expected to do well, having been given last year's winner Vito. I always think that must be a bit demoralising, unless you're an obvious no-hoper.

DearGoldFish · 15/09/2024 08:28

Meh. Not really. It's a formula every year. I've just written it down for once.

Bill Bailey probably thought that too but...

If she can dance well and connect with the audience she will do just fine. And you don't have to actually win to get the career boost.

RedToothBrush · 15/09/2024 08:56

None of them are ever gutted at their partner. Ever. They all are extra delighted to have got their first choice.

It's quite the thing.

Choux · 15/09/2024 09:00

Someone said Punam looked good while dancing. Did she? I only saw her for a couple of seconds but thought she looked a bit wooden. Might need to rewatch.

I have no idea who Montell is in real life (and I wonder if she was the one mis gendered by the guardian as a male celeb as it is not clearly a female name) but I saw her long muscular glistening thighs last night and they reminded me of AJ Odudu's thighs. I hope she can dance like her. It's a shame AJ had to withdraw.

Aquarius1234 · 15/09/2024 09:03

I'm not liking Nick or Paul. Plus both look bad in a way they can't improve.
I'd say awful casting those two.

balletflats · 15/09/2024 09:03

@Choux I'm glad I'm not the only one who remembers AJ's legs with fondness. That girl is a goddess and she was robbed! I am excited for MoJo, they will bring something special.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 15/09/2024 09:04

Doesn’t Chris have Dianne? I find her incredibly overrated. Katya is, I’ll grant you, a fantastic choreographer.

Montell was an athlete and is now a Gladiator on the new series. A lot of women over the years, some of them sportswomen, have been tall, slim, beautiful and fit, but also had two left feet. But what we saw of her looked promising,

I'd love to see Johannes do really well with her, he could do with an uncomplicated contender where he just gets to teach her to dance and has fun without any drama.

BehindTheSequinsandStilettos · 15/09/2024 09:08

Red has it spot on.
The 9-6 split won't matter by week 4 unless Arsenal fans put a spoke in the works/someone else is deemed "safe" and gets fewer votes (hopefully not Montell or Punam or we'll have the GBP racial bias arguments again).

Giving Merson Vindaloo for an American Smooth is enough for a sympathy vote from me however. Plus I found it interesting when he said You want me to say I'm happy (or whatever it was) - I'd like to see him go "off script" live and say what he thinks.

I think Tom looked good with Nadiya (and had them paired pre-spoilers because of height) but she may have been better off with Nick. He seemed very low-energy around Luba and Nadiya's jokes about "diving in" at the "deep end" sank like a stone. Plus I had looked forward to her calling him Nicholas. Oh well.

Chris and Wynne have the potential to be hilarious or to not know when to stop.
But Red is correct that Dianne and Katya were chosen to give them both a shot and, whether I agree with it or not, Chris will get some sympathy points.

Toyah has quite a YouTube fanbase so I thought was a dark horse but the disdain for Neil across all fora is quite something (and I truly think is undeserved) plus she deliberately going for zany, means marmite to the voters. She'll have my vote I think - probably at the expense of a novice's perfectly respectable routine. We saw that with Kaye last year.

Montell looked brilliant. JB gives Amy her first final since Karim and the feelgood factor this series needed after the furore (the Beeb still hasn't had its official report published. At a cost of 250k, the license-fee payers do have a right to know). I hope they get there on their own performances rather than a Get Amy To The Final storyline.

In the same way Punam looks like Nikita 2.0 (no experience, no fanbase) Shayne looks like Will 2.0 (some experience, housewife fanbase). The dynamics are boring. I'd have rather had Punam with Carlos or with Neil (the latter did bangra for It Takes Two. They could have done a cracking routine).
Shayne was surprised to get Nancy apparently.

I'll need to rewatch Jamie and Michelle. I missed any chemistry. I thought Jowita and Pete, the smokers, were the obvious showmance this year. I may be mistaken.

Red is completely correct in saying production will slip them a ropey samba instead of a lifeline charleston when they want to. We saw that with Krishnan last year. All that said, it can all only be manipulated so far and once the audience have a favourite, they can change the trajectory. Take Hamza: he was unknown, unexpected and scooped the victory even though Helen performed better on the night.
