Nice new thread for when the old one wears out.

I found it on Google dated August 2024 when I was googling why they randomly removed a program I was currently watching.
It makes sense because Amazon has started moving neighbours over to the Prime side which is available now for all.

Whoah, wait, what? Does this mean I don't have to pay a fortune annually to watch Neighbours on Amazon Prime?

highdaysandholudays · 03/10/2024 07:58

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom I dropped my Amazon prime membership a while ago because of he fact it was such a confusing platform and much of what I wanted to watch on there you have to pay extra for. The subtitles are also very hit and miss which is very annoying. I watch neighbours just on freevee. If it moves to a pay platform I won't continue to watch it. It ended up being the only program I access on Amazon.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 03/10/2024 08:12

Thanks, @highdaysandholudays - that's interesting. We live abroad and used to make use of Amazon Prime offers through a shipping system which delivered in the UK and then was forwarded to us at not too much extra cost, which was extremely useful. Now we are still abroad but in a different country where the shipping forwarding system is costly and slow, so we can't make use of it, so the only reason we kept up Amazon Prime was for the video aspect, which isn't that brilliant, (though I loved Mrs Maisel!). I'm rethinking that now!
I hadn't noticed any problems with the subtitles, though, they work fine on Amazon Firestick on both Freevee and Prime. (Now you can bet next time I watch, there will be no subtitles!)

whatsyourusername · 03/10/2024 14:29

Mine is now showing as a prime programme but I still get the amateur adverts!

ArabellaFishwife · 03/10/2024 15:52

I noticed it was different, but as the change coincided with the start of the 2024 season, didn't pay much attention. I still access it via Freevee.

Re the name Nell, IIRC Sonja was looking at Harold Bishop's Ramsey St book and saw the Mrs Mangel's Christian name and suggested it to Toadie.

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2024 09:04

Mel saying she was vice’s aunt was weird. I don’t think of my husband’s aunts and uncle’s by marriage or not as my aunts and uncles. And I’m not sure how long Mel and Joe were together if that preceded vic and Jane. So that would be even weirder. Your partner’s aunt/uncle’s ex not related. I’m not saying I would date them but she made it sound much closer related than they are. There have been much closer relatives in actual relationships on Ramsey street!

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 07/10/2024 14:38

I got the feeling that was just to plug the very obvious hole in the plot line because without it, older viewers would have been saying, “Hang on. Wasn’t Mel married to Jane’s uncle?!”

wtf was fake Byron on the stilts about?! 😂

Arconialiving · 07/10/2024 14:43

How are Joe & Jane related? I've never quite understood that especially as I thought Joe was about 20 years younger than Jane?

Jane's mother Amanda was Joe's brother; they were Mrs Mangel's children. I don't know the ages. Jane must be early 50s, as we were a similar age when she appeared in the '80s. Joe I think was quite a bit younger than his sister, but I'm not sure of the ages at all.

anotherlevel · 07/10/2024 15:14

@EBearhug "Jane's mother Amanda was Joe's brother;"

I'm confused lol

EBearhug · 07/10/2024 15:19

At the top you have Mrs Mangel, aka Nell, but usually Mrs.

Her two children were Amanda and Joe.

Amanda is Jane's mother. Jane (who was then Plain Jane Super-brain, before a make-over caused Mike to fall in love with her,) was sent to live with her grandmother Mrs Mangel because Amanda was living some sort of jet-set socialite life in HK, and a teenaged daughter got in the way.

Joe later came back to live with his mother for reasons I don't remember. He was at different points married to Kerry (Skye's mother) and Melanie.

Jane is Joe's niece.

Arconialiving · 07/10/2024 15:21

So Joe is Jane's uncle?! I always thought he was loads younger than Jane!!

Did we ever know / see their parents in Neighbours?

I've just googled the ages of the actors - I've no idea why I thought Jane was older than Joe. Annie Jones is 57 & Mark Little 64 - I'm really surprised! I thought she was loads older!

Off to google how old Karl & Susan are now!

Arconialiving · 07/10/2024 15:23

Thanks @EBearhug - I've watched Neighbours from the beginning & remember Kerry well but still don't remember Joe & Melanie being together at all!

EBearhug · 07/10/2024 15:23

Annie Jones may be 57, but I think Jane may be more likely 54.

Arconialiving · 07/10/2024 15:24

Really! I remember being young & Jane seeming so much older & very glamorous after her makeover (not just 8 years older Blush)

Arconialiving · 07/10/2024 15:26

I put Jane, Karl & Susan all in the same age bracket - didn't realise Jane was 10 years younger than those guys!

EBearhug · 07/10/2024 15:27

I don't really remember Joe and Melanie, but I do have gaps because of having lived without a TV at various points in my 20s, or just still being at work and there not yet being on demand TV.

It's always possible Joe had other marriages. It's amazing what can happen to a character when they depend years off-screen, gaining spouses and children, and never mentioned, despite how close all the street are, and how they probably would have travelled for weddings and funerals and so kn. (It's the same on all soaps.)

No, Jane was closer to the Kennedy children, I'd have thought. Not as young, but pretty sure Jane, Mike, Henry were all at school when Susan first appeared as a teacher? I could be wrong. I'd have put Scott & Charlene in that bracket, too, but Charlene was an apprentice mechanic when Neighbours started, I think. I don't know about Australian school leaving ages (nor retirement ages.)

No they were gone by then I think

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2024 16:03

Just checked and Jane left in 89 and the Kennedys were 94

MiddleClassProblem · 07/10/2024 16:05

Also the Willis were in that house before the Kennedys. Was is Des and Daphne before that?

Ah, that was mostly my uni years - not much Neighbours, especially in term-time.

CandyRaining · 07/10/2024 18:34

I don’t like this thing being called the boylesque, it makes me think of boils every time they say it.
Also, agree that they really overdid the auntie thing, they’re acting as though they’re blood related.
