Let’s hope it’s better than the opening ceremony!

Starts at 7 pm on BBC 1.

Alex Yee will be carrying the GB flag.

I wish they would shut up about how many mothers competed for GB. How many fathers competed? It's like a surprise that mums of young children have the capacity to compete or something. Rubbish.

Being a father does not have a physical impact on an athlete's body.

Arconialiving · 11/08/2024 21:11

Me too @TellyUsername

Willmafrockfit · 11/08/2024 21:11

Sorry, what's a games maker?

The London 2012 volunteers were called games makers

Personally speaking my body was ruined by giving birth so to become an Olympian as a mother is awe inspiring to me.

Agree but there’s also a lot of focus on childcare and finding the time etc. they had the lady who got silver in the shooting talking about sacrificing time with her baby to train and how she felt about that - it wouldn’t even be part of the conversation with a new dad and there would be no suggestion of guilt!!

The dads didn't push babies out of their vaginas, though.

TellyUsername · 11/08/2024 21:12

I hope they are least rehearsed tonights offering

MouseofCommons · 11/08/2024 21:12

Did I miss anything in the first hour of this? It's mostly been the athletes walking in so far.

I don't think the tiny contribution fathers make towards creating a new human can be compared to what women put their bodies through!

I’ve met Steve cram he’s such an arrogant prick!

The crowd look bored rigid

The pace is off.

Not as drastically as in the opening ceremony, but it's definitely dragging on a tad.

JewelleryCat · 11/08/2024 21:13

What’s going on here? Music and lights

Bruisername · 11/08/2024 21:13

They do like to drag things out.

Agree there, most posters here are mums so know what the toll is on our bodies. But the whole '9 mums' thing has been repeated over and over. We get it, it's amazing. But women are amazing.

I'd also like to hear how many fathers competed this year for GB. Since we're all into equality in the Olympics...

StarryDance · 11/08/2024 21:13

I think you have to be there

I think it’s good to highlight it and it is impressive to have a baby and then get your body and mind ready again to compete at that level.

ApolloandDaphne · 11/08/2024 21:14

This is boring.

banivani · 11/08/2024 21:14

This is quite atmospheric

Bruisername · 11/08/2024 21:14

Scary

BadSpellaSpellaSpella · 11/08/2024 21:14

Alison felix lost sponsorship when she became a mother and it was only a few years ago the sports director at the time of British cycling told one of the female cyclists to 'just leave the sport and have babies' when she complained about lack of qualification entries. I think it's amazing now how females athletes are still competing after giving birth.

They have. They've missed the wonderful Andrew Cotter's commentary and his big reveal in this thread.

They do like to drag things out.

Other countries have tons of ad breaks during their Olympic broadcasts … I may be wrong, but I’m starting to think that’s why they have these laboured dragged out bits.
