Strictly Come Dancing '24 Thread 1 : Who will be our celebs and Pros?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 13/07/2024 20:45

Starting a new SCD thread for chat prior to the series as the last is about to fill.

These threads are usually helmed by @PolkadotsAndMoonbeams and I normally deputise, but I haven't seen her around in a while

This thread will discuss who has been chosen for the show, but not who has been paired with who as that's a spoiler for the first show.

This is a NO SPOILER thread

@Taytocrisps

I know! I thought a slow going speculation and announcement thread would last til September

<sheepish> I'm posting a fair bit to get back to my normal user name but I quit the forum earlier in the year so it's now...BehindTheSequinsAndStilettos Wink
I'm being topical.

My God, though, Gio's fanbase is feral. I made the mistake of looking at comments on the Fail and the amount of vitriol Amanda's had is unhinged.
Utterly insane.

If he is cleared, it will get worse not better. I do feel for her. Even if they've found nothing on film that crosses a line (and who decides that line, where is their wellbeing policy) two lives are already ruined/aligned with this for their remaining careers. The BBC should never have left it so long then let it go on for so long.
It wasn't fair on anybody.

@FailBetter

You can username change on the app it allows it still i think

At this point she will look unhinged.

I've already name changed but on all the threads you were already on, it stays the same as you were at that time - I think to prevent sock puppeting. I don't use the app. I'm still Confused as to the number of people saying Amanda wasn't good and couldn't hack it. Did they watch what I did? She was amazing. She'd have made at least the semis but I'd have thought had the makings of a finalist.

TheShellBeach · 24/07/2024 18:24

I always thought that Amanda would've won.

They've been alluding that he will be, but this might be just what his side is putting out.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/07/2024 18:25

I was voting for them

Can I just moan again about how it's unfair that we can't vote in Ireland.

Well you get to watch it with Tayto, Kimberly and Club Orange so my sympathy does not extend far!

Just seen part of the interview with Krishnan - She says the BBC has blocked 50 hours of footage.

Taytocrisps · 24/07/2024 18:44

Thanks for the sympathy vote @EineReiseDurchDieZeit Grin

wantonsoupwanted · 24/07/2024 18:45

The reports that have come out have said there's "no smoking gun" which concerns me a little. Why would there have to be a smoking gun? With Graziano there was obviously evidence of kicking on video with, by the sounds of things, hitting and spitting also reported with the angry tirades Zara was subjected to seen as abuse in the context of these "smoking gun" incidents. Had he not kicked, hit or spat, however, I do find myself wondering if all the shouting would have been written off as just a tough training regime. Although who knows, I haven't seen the tapes.

Is that Eine's children's names? 😏😏

EsmaCannonball · 24/07/2024 18:48

I'm not sure that Strictly can be held responsible for unhinged people on social media. Amanda was already getting lots of trolling from the TRA lobby prior to Strictly and they campaigned to get her cancelled from the show (as they did with Robert Webb). I'm willing to bet there were a lot of trolls who loved getting a second stick to beat her with over the Giovanni stuff.

Interesting that Krishnan is interviewing her.

FailBetter · 24/07/2024 18:53

I've seen part of it on the Fail (sorry) but it's on in full in ten minutes on Ch4.
It is interesting as Krishnan had a blast. But I wonder whether he can relate or heard things at the time. <gets popcorn> <feels dirty> <gets over guilt of rubbernecking with a cookie>

Just seen part of the interview with Krishnan - She says the BBC has blocked 50 hours of footage.

My issue with the tapes is that she hasn’t actually said what she’s looking for. Any legal rep would clearly say “tell us what you expect to see on them” rather than “have the lot and you can change your claim depending on what you see”

im not saying an opinion either way on it - just that would be the clear and obvious legal move there.

If I’m honest I suspect that this will always be a he said/she said narrative. The fact that there’s seemingly still no proof of anything (unlike the Zara graz situation).

do I think that he overstepped with the strictness? Yeah probably. Do I think he was shouty and overly direct (coming back to the language barrier we all mentioned in this thread) - almost certainly.

but also do I think she was under much more pressure and scrutiny from the immediate backlash following her announcement? Absolutely. Do I think she was vulnerable and probably not resilient enough to cope with the extreme pressures that strictly can bring (largely due to some of the toxic fan base) also yes. I believe the show gave her a huge lack of duty of care even away from Giovanni’s pairing.

the reality is that both of their careers are forever tarnished by this now.

No, you're right. But she's being accused of acting in that interview. Bollocks. If she is, she deserves an Oscar. Amanda Platell and her ilk can do one.

itsnotabouthepasta · 24/07/2024 19:02

@EsmaCannonball i think strictly can and should do more to protect their celebs and pros on socials.

they could delete awful comments. Come out and condemn people for making those statements. They could set up things so certain words/phrases are banned (Protecting her from the TRAs)

the reality is that the producers damn well KNEW she was going to be a controversial choice. She’s always had a reputation of being strong willed and opinionated (that’s not a criticism btw) and she had been long getting abuse on social media because of her trans comments. I absolutely believe that they (the producers) threw her into the lions den.

Taytocrisps · 24/07/2024 19:09

Iirc, Alexandra Burke's mother had passed away shortly before she participated in Strictly. It was mentioned a lot in the show and she was frequently in tears. It made me very uneasy because I felt that Alexandra wasn't in a good place mentally and should have been advised to wait another year or two. Instead, she was allowed to participate and it was brought up at every opportunity. I felt like she was being exploited and (from a purely selfish point of view) it's not what I want to watch in a light entertainment show.

I can't remember who her partner was and I'm not suggesting anything untoward happened in terms of her training. But I don't think her welfare was top of the producers' agenda - quite the opposite, in fact.

OP posts:
itsnotabouthepasta · 24/07/2024 19:12

Agree @Taytocrisps

Plus there was the fact that not once did the show ever stand up for her against the abuse led by Dan Wooten. It was a relentless pile on for months.

if the press are going too far with criticisms they should be called out for it.

same with social media trolls.

ignoring it doesn’t make it go away. It makes the show look complicit.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 24/07/2024 19:12

@Taytocrisps

Hers was Gorka. She's a good example of what Richard Osman said about it attracting vulnerable people
