Favourite retro advert campaigns

Usually when people discuss retro nostalgic adverts, they usually refer to individual ones. I want to know what other people's favourite advert campaigns were. Mine are:

  1. The PG tips adverts with the chimpanzees - enough said 🤣🥰.
  2. The Philadelphia adverts with those two shrill eccentric women.
  3. The insurance company adverts with the blonde bespectacled boy/man called Norman. He has the ability to see into the future, hence his job 🤣
  4. The adverts for shares of electricity companies after they got privatised. They all featured this monster family (like Munsters or Adams Family)

There were these adverts with the actor that played Arthur Daly, in character, for the Leeds building society. I think he was singing or rapping or something in them?! I can't remember the jingle but I loved them for some reason.

Some of these are great. The milky way ones, there was the Hofmeister beer ones about Follow The bear, it was a man in a rudimentary moth eaten theme park bear costume with sunglasses and a pork pie hat?! Am I remembering this correctly?!

@BobbyBiscuits I loved the Leeds adverts when I was 7-8 🤩😃 sorry of like a loveable rogue grandad. I especially liked the Greek restaurant one where the plates can't smash

i was singing Finger of Fudge to myself the other day
I also still say “it’s frothy man” in the American accent and hope someone else gets it

Cresta!

Follow the Bear jingle - can’t remember product (beer, I think).

Andrex pups - big cute bundles of Labrador pups running away w loo roll

Cornetto - just one cornetto etc

(Deaf so really watching and no subtitles in my day). Gives my age away.

There was an amazing one with squirrels - on a washing line, I think. But I can't remember what it advertised Grin

The Guinness one with the white horses.

Tick follows tock, etc.

This is very specific and a bit random but does anyone remember an advert for a girls’ magazine called “I Love Horses” that had a terribly catchy jingle?! We sing it in our household on a regular basis but changing the lyrics to pretty much anything that’s relevant.

I Love Horses -
Best of all the animals!
I Love Horses -
THEY’RE MY FRIENDS!

Was it the Carling Black Label mission impossible one?

We still sing this! Although in the original the last line was "They're my friend" singular, which makes it even more ridiculous.

Maureen Lipman in the bT ads with the "he's got an ology"

You've got an 'ology, you're a scientist..!

Alex Drake · 17/07/2024 21:59

Two very 80's ones that I still sing in my head regularly;

To the tune of baggy trousers

'Mornin time when we're awake
Brush our teeth with, Colgate
Colgate blue minty gel
Colgate blue minty gel
It's a brilliant, toothpaste
Love the colour
Love the taste
Colgate, blue minty gel
Mum and dad use it as well'

One I think of every time I see a spider in the bathroom

'Oh it ain't no fun scaring anyone
When you're a spider in the bath with perspex
Even eight leg drive, won't get you up the side
When you're a spider in the bath with perspex
Nothing can beat the shine or shape or colour
Dee Dee de Dee Dee de Dee doo doo doo (forget the words here)
Oops, oh no, that's just confirmed our fears
This sign means it's guaranteed for twenty years
Oh it ain't no fun scaring anyone
When your a spider in the bath with perspex'

The were a few great Honda adverts. One featuring a guy in white overalls driving and riding Hondas through the decades singing Dream the Impossible Dream. But their best was their take on a Rube Goldberg machine, sort of knocking over dominos but with parts of the car - no CGI, took 100s off takes. Both art in their way but I still don't drive a Honda 😆

Floogal · 15/08/2024 17:22

Actually watching Small Potatoes on Cbeebies reminded me of the Smiths crisps adverts in the late 80s. Potatoes singing excitedly about being turned into crisps. I thought they were really cute at the time. Though looking back they seem horrific.

Same goes for the kia ora adverts with the ska soundtrack and smart arse crows (like the ones in Dumbo).
