Favourite retro advert campaigns

Usually when people discuss retro nostalgic adverts, they usually refer to individual ones. I want to know what other people's favourite advert campaigns were. Mine are:

  1. The PG tips adverts with the chimpanzees - enough said 🤣🥰.
  2. The Philadelphia adverts with those two shrill eccentric women.
  3. The insurance company adverts with the blonde bespectacled boy/man called Norman. He has the ability to see into the future, hence his job 🤣
  4. The adverts for shares of electricity companies after they got privatised. They all featured this monster family (like Munsters or Adams Family)

KitKat have a break, have a KitKat. The panda one. Maybe they were only in Ireland.

HEBS anti smoking, underage drinking etc adverts, aimed at teenagers in Scotland. They were brilliant.

The Rolo adverts, animated sketches...

Gillette... so many great adverts!!

In the early 1990's I was a car nerd living in France.. the Peugot 806 advert was 'Dit oui, au troisième enfant' I analysed for a uni module! Great advert!

"That's handy, Harry. Stick it in the oven". Used this a lot when I worked with a lovely guy called Harry who has now sadly passed.

Leonard Rossiter & Joan Collins. Was it Campari?

Cinzano darling? what a trouper Joan Collins was !

The Sprite adverts with the sprite in them. My favourite was the one where the sprite was dispensed from the vending machine.

I need to mention some one offs though - the Unison advert with the bear and the ants. We still say “scuse me” in a tiny voice in our house.

And the Softmint “Mr Soft” advert.

I’m sure I read somewhere that Jose Gonzalez, whose song was used in the Sony Brevia advert a PP mentioned, got annoyed with people throwing balls round at his gigs.

Also the 'Nicole' 'Papa!' Adverts for the car Clio. They did loads of them but the last one has Bob Mortimer and Vic Reeves in it and she ran away with Bob at the end after shouting Bobbbb!!!! In the church

From childhood-
Do the shake n vac and put the freshness back.
The caramel bunny.
Fred on the Homepride advert.

More recently -
Metz - beware the judderman
The Skoda one when they made the car out of cake
The one where he makes his old car look like a Peugeot 206
'Armadillos' Dime bar with Harry Enfield
The ad with the Scottish woman who looked like an alien

Were you truly wafted here from Paradise? ...No Luton Airport....

Me and brother used to know all the words to the adverts and recite them. Usually in the car. It must have driven my parents mad, but their fault for letting us watch too much TV 🤣

Our favourites were:
Philadelphia ("What you got today then?"
BT ("Antony, you get an ology and you're practically a scientist" "People with always needs plates")
Milk ("Acington Stanley, who are they?")
Milky Way (The red car and the blue car had a race)

Weird and dark Dunlop tyres ad, directed by one of the Scotts, I think. I found it disturbing and fascinating in equal measure.

HelpMeGetThrough · 14/07/2024 11:45

Chaz n Dave Courage Best....

Shangrilalala · 14/07/2024 11:47

Ignore my credit above - not one of the Scotts. Still remarkable, though

murasaki · 14/07/2024 17:54

Papa and Nicole. All cars look the same to me, but I think Renault?

Timotei Shampoo and Flake ads.

I found them similar 😂

I remember pestering my mum to let me eat a Flake in the bath. It was my dream! But she drew the line at having the bath full to overflowing.

I’ve never washed my hair in a waterfall, but I do like the idea of showering in one.

The Pepperami ones. Half eaten Pepperami dragging itself along the ground shouting “come back and finish me off you bastard!”

Pepperami. It’s a bit of an animal.

Was voiced by Adrian Edmondson I think. I remember the peperami adverts before with the scientist teasing the Venus fly traps and piranhas.

Was it the Toffee Crisp one? "Are you there Sidney??" When they were doing a seance?

It was for British Gas shares: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-15792873.amp

I remember the Toffee Crisp one though, great advert. Also the very famous Levi’s 501 advert in the Laundrette 😅

Thousands 'told Sid' 25 years ago - BBC News

It was 25 years ago that the "tell Sid" advertising campaign prompted hundreds of thousands of people to buy shares in British Gas.

I loved J R Hartley, the joy when he finally found his book

NeedToKnow101 · 15/07/2024 17:55

Paxo Rooster Booster with the funky chicken, which hardly anyone remembers. I'm niche, me.

HEBS anti smoking, underage drinking etc adverts, aimed at teenagers in Scotland. They were brilliant.

I can still remember all the words to the anti smoking anthem “Why Do You Keep On Running Boy?”. Also loved the one where the guy gets drunk and tries to chat up his crush and slurs “Alright Sarah, ah realleh fancy ye so how aboot it?”

KimberleyClark · 15/07/2024 20:31

Another one I liked was the Boddingtons ones - “By eck you smell gorgeous tonight petal”. Never could resist a northerner in a tux.

PossumintheHouse · 15/07/2024 20:33

All of the Irn Bru ones.

Ye cannae call her Fanny.
