Favourite retro advert campaigns

Usually when people discuss retro nostalgic adverts, they usually refer to individual ones. I want to know what other people's favourite advert campaigns were. Mine are:

  1. The PG tips adverts with the chimpanzees - enough said 🤣🥰.
  2. The Philadelphia adverts with those two shrill eccentric women.
  3. The insurance company adverts with the blonde bespectacled boy/man called Norman. He has the ability to see into the future, hence his job 🤣
  4. The adverts for shares of electricity companies after they got privatised. They all featured this monster family (like Munsters or Adams Family)

The Guinness advert with horses riding the waves - from 1999.

Thetrickcyclist · 16/07/2024 17:06

Irn Bru. Made in Scotland. From girders.

Renault Clio - the "Nicole?" "Papa?" series

Yellow Pages - J.R. Hartley, and the one with the young man who has to find a furniture restorer ASAP after damaging his parents' table during a party

Kia-Ora - I always associate the adverts with going to the cinema as they were always shown in the intermissions

Hamlet cigars. The photo booth one especially. In the days when tobacco advertising was everywhere. "Happiness....is a cigar called Hamlet"

Birds eye potatoes waffles, they're waffley versatile.
They go with beans, bangers, bacon, burgers, fish fingers, fish fingers (dk why they said that twice)
Eggs in, eggs on, gammon, steak, chops,
Grill em, bake em fry em eat em
Birdseye potato waffles
They're waffley versatile.

I am tragic for remembering every word. And no, my dad wasn't an 80s advert copywriter.

The vw golf ad from the 80's with the woman leaving her husband. She's upset and takes off her jewellery, posts the wedding ring through the letterbox, dumps the coat and earrings but as she goes to drop the car keys down the drain she decides to keep the car.
Last scene shows her driving away with a smile and the tag line was something like "if only everything was as reliable as a Volkswagen"
An absolutely classic ad that I still find myself thinking about all these years later.

Do you remember the VW advert. When the driver was getting annoyed with a constant squeaky sound? His wife was asleep in the passenger seat. He stopped at a garage and the mechanic worked out it was his wife's squeaky earring, not the reliable Volkswagon.

The red car and the blue car had a race
All red wants to do is stuff his face
He eats everything he sees
from trucks to prickly trees
But smart old blue he took the milky way

I can't remember what the product was but featured a couple where the woman was dreaming of travelling the world, her drip of a boyfriend said 'we want to be together' and she just looked at the camera. 😀

I think it was insurance of some sort. “I want to enjoy the garden”.

Edited

@BobbyBiscuits I was singing this (for no reason) just the other day 😝

I also almost always chant R Whites when I open the fridge door. Habits never die!

camelfinger · 16/07/2024 20:29

NatWest 1991. It makes my heart ache with nostalgia. The busy workplace, the girl he liked, going out on the town. It’s not all work work work you know.

merryandbrightdelight · 16/07/2024 20:51

Floogal · 16/07/2024 21:02

I liked the snail racing one and the hurling one where the opposite team turn into monsters.
