Me too. Last month I saw James at coop live, Dogstar at New Century Hall, The Wedding present at Academy 2, the Breeders at Albert Hall, Gary Newman at the Ritz and several others. We are very blessed.

@larkstar
Totally agree with you about Dua Lipa's set. She performed with her back to the audience for a whole song, just for the camera - just like a TOTP performance. I thought it was really disrespectful to the crowds there and quite a soulless performance.

If you fancy supporting grass roots music in Manchester then this is on Saturday

(selecting Taking Back Tomorrow would also be appreciated by the band.)

Nice! Just listened to In This Moment and it's giving me My Life Story vibes. I'll check with my other half and see if he's up for it.

SZA - like a kids Happy Meal from the 90's - lots of packaging and not much inside. And I thought Dua Lipa was the most disappointing thing I'd seen - I'm a fan of her vocals - the colour in all the registers and great diction and (previously) some great songs - if I was a newbie headliner I'd try and get advice from the greats that have previously knocked it out of the park - I think she got it all wrong - talked too much to the crowd about what it mean to her to be there - it was me, me, me. I've read she has a keen business head on her - maybe something the competitive world of modeling hardened up in her - she seemed to want to push her own recent album (which is so poor IMHO) and make memories and images for her own resume - not what the best headliners do - they think like fans and give them everything they hope for IMHO - I'm wasn't a particularly ardent fan of Elton (great artist, song book, etc) but he was the best headliner I've seen - Bowie, Springsteen, McCartney - they seem to understand what it is to be a Bowie, Springsteen, McCartney fan - Bowie in particular. DL's set was more like a very very long Top of the Pops slot. Coldplay - I was like WTFUUUuu when they were announced (again) but they put on a great audience centred show. I still think it's been the worst Glasto in years.

I think you mean the worst Glastonbury according to your televisual entertainment!
Everyone I know that went had a blast!

David Bowie in 2000 was the best headliner by the way.

Yeah tbh the best years for going are often the ones where on paper you’re not massively bothered about loads of the main stage line up so more time for exploring- I’m so on the case for a ticket next year!

Bowie was sublime - opening with Wild Is The Wind was an act of understated genius.

He looked like an Angel and I was an emotional wreck!

Gutted that James’s set doesn’t appear to be on it iPlayer.

I think there's an issue with lack of headline acts. Plus the cost of production probably means that it's only cost effective to play if you're currently out on the road touring.

I think it will become more and more difficult for festivals to put on decent line ups over the next 10 or 20 years. Some massive acts (eg. Those with billions of streams) will possibly have very little live performance experience so what do you do then? Book heritage acts?

But yes I agree that the Streets could easily have headlined. I guess the bookers thought it was a gamble.

I think they probably viewed Kasabian as being too much of a gamble as well due to the fairly recent frontman change.

Serge is utterly nailing it though. I saw them at knebworth on his first gig. He was brilliant. I’m just annoyed I can’t make it to my local record shop for their up coming tiny venue gig. It would be carnage

Yes probably right. I can't bear Kasabian so a disappointing TBA for me but they seemed to have a good crowd.

I've just watched it! You might have to do a search for James though as I don't think it appeared in the normal bit. It's also not necessarily described properly and makes it look like it's just one track or something, but it is the full set.

There was a lot I wanted to see that bbc didn’t cover. I thought it was me not working the iplayer properly, but it wasn’t they weren’t showing them. Not even that obscure bands. Ones like seb lowe, lottery winners, scouting for girls, zutons.
last year I discovered loads of artists. This year not so much

Yeah I was really impressed with how good he was. I went to see them in 2006 but I don’t think I’d have the stamina for it now. 😂

It is! It's in the Headliners and Legends category.

Mel C made me feel really old. She's 50 ffs. How can she still move like that 😀
Enjoyed watching her performance though.

I think this set is one of those sets, like a lot of them, you need to be there to feel the music and the crowd. I bet it feels electric there. It looks a fun set.

One of the most boring sets I have ever seen was at a V Festival and it was The Strokes. I wish I had gone with some of our group who went to see Groove Armada. After that it was Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Oh look, Flea going to the very edge of the stage to do his guitar solo, again.

I was there and I thought Dua Lipa was slick but strangely flat (not vocally just generally) Coldplay, on the other hand, were electric, and I'm not a Coldplay fan by any means.

Loved Tilda Swinton, especially big fish, little fish

kazzaD66 · 01/07/2024 21:15

I'm sure I've seen James on iplayer.
I've only just found London Grammar, had to physically enter 'London Grammar' in the search engine to get to them!

sugarbyebye · 01/07/2024 21:15

Tilda Swinton is just one of the coolest people alive. Alongside Kim Gordon.

I didn't watch Sza as I'd never heard of her (and I've heard of pretty much everyone on the broadcast stages) and I thought I didn't like r&b, but I bloody love Jordan Rakei so I guess that's not true. I feel bad for her if she had sound issues and a sparse stage, sounds like she gave it her all. I like the fact Emily Eavis takes risks, and sometimes it's not going to work out. Good to learn from it and move on.

Jellykat · 01/07/2024 21:35

Tilda Swinton is cool i agree, but i still prefer the Sparks / Cate Blanchett
collaboration from last year

sugarbyebye · 01/07/2024 21:36

That was also great.
