Is it just me, or did Shania Twain seemed like she had jetlag

WrenNatsworthy · 30/06/2024 23:58

Squeeze played in 'our' (I'm still part of the crew after 9 years even though I'm too ill to work 🤣) backstage bar on one of the nights (Theatre and Circus).
Loads of people will be going home now and our tradition is to to close the festival at Arcadia.

I think that filming at Arcadia would be really tricky. I also think that they wouldn't want it. They stay in control of what gets shared on their SM. It's one of those things that you go to Glastonbury to discover. There's a reason it sells out every year and it's not the headliners. My friend is in the early stages of pregnancy and has spent lots of time in the healing fields, eating amazing food, and sticking to smaller stages like Croissant Neuf.

My mates have sent some ace video. I thinn those vocal problems just don't come through in the same way they do via the mixing desk on telly.

I was at Kylie and Dolly Parton and they weren't miming. Lionel Richie was my favourite legend ever.

Whoever put that thing about the legends slot needing to be taken away because they're all getting old is missing the point. They are there to be honoured.

Whoever said Jo Whiley should give up her job for a younger person, please consider retiring at 58 and allow someone else to take your place 🤣

I think the scheduling should’ve been rejigged across the stages, SZA should’ve been a West Holts act, Avril should’ve been Pyramid and someone like Kasabian or The Streets could’ve headlined.

The crowds for all of those were way surpassing the stages they had, I’d be interested to know how the booking teams work across stages, and whether they just look at ‘their’ line up or across the festival as a whole.

Changingplace · 01/07/2024 08:34

@WrenNatsworthy I agree, I don’t think filming Arcadia would work, you need to be there, it’s a whole experience, I’m not surprised they don’t want it on the coverage.

I think the BBC should give up on the additional sets they get people to do in their studio, I’m not bothered about them, I’d rather see the sets in front of the audience & more interviews.

Newgirls · 01/07/2024 08:36

sza would have been amazing on a more intimate stage but she is arguably bigger than avril now. Looking at the sza audience they looked really young and there aren’t many of that age who get or can afford Glasto tickets so her audience weren’t there

longtompot · 30/06/2024 22:33

Same @JaneJeffer Even my 24 yo dd is a bit nonplussed about her set. Says it looks like it would be much more fun than what it actually is.
I was just telling her about Young Fathers set last year or the year before which was incredible.

Young Fathers were amazing! Think it was last year anyway.

I think there's an issue with lack of headline acts. Plus the cost of production probably means that it's only cost effective to play if you're currently out on the road touring.

I think it will become more and more difficult for festivals to put on decent line ups over the next 10 or 20 years. Some massive acts (eg. Those with billions of streams) will possibly have very little live performance experience so what do you do then? Book heritage acts?

But yes I agree that the Streets could easily have headlined. I guess the bookers thought it was a gamble.

True, and I guess the festival is a victim of its own success there too in that it sells out before headliners are announced so the people who would’ve prioritised seeing her aren’t in a position to buy a ticket if they don’t already have one.

covetingthepreciousthings · 01/07/2024 09:44

Does anyone have any insider knowledge on how the booking works? Would love to know how many are approached to headline the Pyramid stage and turn it down.

Agree with PP's about The Streets or Greenday would have been good headline choices too.

Springwatch123 · 01/07/2024 09:46

I think I enjoyed Friday nights line-up the best, and of course, Coldplay.

strawberryegg · 01/07/2024 09:48

Watching Avril now and not impressed so far... Looked so bored for her first song, completely flat and out of time for What the Hell. Keeps saying Glaston-berry which is really annoying.

Pissed that she didn't get a better slot?

I don't, but this is an interesting read.

Basically the cost of putting on a good show falls to the band so the amount they actually see is small. Although obviously it bumps up streams if they do a good set and helps them reach a wider audience.

faffadoodledo · 01/07/2024 10:45

Tell you what struck me about the festival was how many female musicians and festival goers there were this year. Younger women too. I hope this reflects the music industry more generally. Lots of female guitarists and drummers up on the stage, and female brass players backing main artists.
Nice positive note for me to end on!

Yes indeed!!!! Emily Eavis is absolutely committed to that and it's great. I really enjoyed the Breeders' set. Real middle aged women being absolutely brilliant. And like you said great to see bands with a mix of men and women.

I think she was very nervous at first (most artists would be!) and that may have come across as pissed off. She most definitely relaxed into it though once she knew the crowd were with her.
Did you watch until the end?

I noticed this too!! Lots of female guitarist and musicians in general absolutely rocking it, I think it’s a brilliant thing to see :)

I don’t, but I’d love to know how the booking works in general, like do acts get approached for a particular stage by that booking team and they want to keep ‘their’ booking, or do acts get approached by the festival as a whole to see if they’re interested then they work out what stage/slot they're the best fit for?

I've heard the opposite.
I can't recall the details but, maybe just after lockdown, he put money behind the bar in the pubs in (?) town so all the locked could have a drink on him.

Same.

He put £1000 behind the bar of 50 pubs dotted around different areas of the country so people could have a drink on him for his 60th.

I went to see him once playing with the Beautiful South, and someone at the front shouted something out to him. He started laughing and said something like, "F**k me, yeah, I remember you." Then went on to tell the audience how he'd roomed next door to this guy on holiday, and then invited this guy and his wife onto the stage. He then told the guy to go to Security after the show and they'd go for a drink...

I spoke to him briefly once when he was touring with Jacqui Abbot, and he was very humble and appreciative of people coming to see him.

He has always come across as a really nice, genuine bloke to me.

larkstar · 01/07/2024 13:55

SZA - like a kids Happy Meal from the 90's - lots of packaging and not much inside. And I thought Dua Lipa was the most disappointing thing I'd seen - I'm a fan of her vocals - the colour in all the registers and great diction and (previously) some great songs - if I was a newbie headliner I'd try and get advice from the greats that have previously knocked it out of the park - I think she got it all wrong - talked too much to the crowd about what it mean to her to be there - it was me, me, me. I've read she has a keen business head on her - maybe something the competitive world of modeling hardened up in her - she seemed to want to push her own recent album (which is so poor IMHO) and make memories and images for her own resume - not what the best headliners do - they think like fans and give them everything they hope for IMHO - I'm wasn't a particularly ardent fan of Elton (great artist, song book, etc) but he was the best headliner I've seen - Bowie, Springsteen, McCartney - they seem to understand what it is to be a Bowie, Springsteen, McCartney fan - Bowie in particular. DL's set was more like a very very long Top of the Pops slot. Coldplay - I was like WTFUUUuu when they were announced (again) but they put on a great audience centred show. I still think it's been the worst Glasto in years.

MalewhoisLaffinalltheway · 01/07/2024 13:56

Actually, it was 60 pubs for his 60th birthday.

I agree it's been a very poor Glastonbury but sadly costs are crazy nowadays for all festivals. I'm just going to keep supporting live music as I love it 😀

Yeah me too. I'm lucky to live in Manchester where we are absolutely spoilt for venues and diversity in music, and most people play here (and it's still affordable as long as you avoid the stadium gigs). We go to a couple of gigs a month, and usually get some merch too. Use it or lose it!
