Our Flag Means Death: Thread 3. It's still utterly brilliant. We are still obsessed.

Ahoy again mateys! Set sail aboard thread 3 where we still wax lyrical about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more 😁(there may also be just a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome)!

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Go watch it (on BBC iPlayer), then come back here and join us. But be warned, some of you may find yourself as hooked as we are 🎣.

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. The show is about their healing and their respective journeys. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. The 2nd lead arrives in episode 3, so you need to give it at least 4 episodes as that’s when the tone changes and the main story starts. It still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

On a different note, I feel the need to gaze at our boys some more. Since we are talking about hope and renewal, we can do polls like this to keep the fight up, then have some hope with Merstede, and then have a big hug about it, whatever happens 😊

Con plays the Sheriff of Nottingham in episode 3 of Time Bandits. The whole persona is played with the demented fervour of Izzy post first toe-cut. He was great. Taika briefly again end of episode 4. Need more Taika.

Time Bandits reminds me of the sort of older children’s show that used to be nestled between Newsround and Neighbours.

One day we shall get Apple TV again for a month or so, and then I shall and enjoy it 😁

I really liked this one - gentle, kind, slow burn with elements of magic realism. No Izzy sex scenes as far as I remember (though it's quite long and I did whizz through it a bit).

I’m really enjoying Time Bandits - lots of funny lines and the special effects are brilliant.
Kevin is great and his sister is outstanding as a ballsy, arrogant, all adults are idiots and I can’t give a fuck teenager.

Taika bits are very Taika! He does look like he’s having fun. They all do actually, it’s really joyful.

I'll second that one, @lizziesaurusx . And I can confirm there are no Izzy sex scenes 😁

That would be so much more convenient than Edinburgh! But I don't think I could get away with another trip this summer. 🤣

How much Taika is there in Time Bandits? Is he only in fleetingly? I'm very excited about seeing it anyway - sone of the more recent reviews seem very positive - but I need to temper my Taika expectations so I can concentrate on the rest of the show.

Train from Edinburgh to London, one day in the middle for travelling - not so much another trip as just a wee add on.😄

I haven't got round to registering with AO3 so I can't go back to this one to revisit before recommending it, but I do remember that there's a scene in a lift which made me cry. Only a couple of minutes per episode he’s in and IMDB lists this as just 3 episodes.

@lizziesaurusx it's fleeting, sadly. I'd say we've had six minutes so far. End of ep 2 and 4. But it's full-on Taika.

Thank you for those, @lizziesaurusx , I enjoyed both of them. I can't quite decide whether I wanted a scene, or at least a mention, of Lucius and Fang finding out the real reason that the setup was a problem (trying not to give any spoilers!)
