Our Flag Means Death: Thread 3. It's still utterly brilliant. We are still obsessed.

Ahoy again mateys! Set sail aboard thread 3 where we still wax lyrical about our favourite show, its cast, its music, fan edits, fan fiction and more 😁(there may also be just a little obsessing over our fabulous leads - pictures extremely welcome)!

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Go watch it (on BBC iPlayer), then come back here and join us. But be warned, some of you may find yourself as hooked as we are 🎣.

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think it's not for you. But it’s actually a show about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and want what the other has. The show is about their healing and their respective journeys. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, two full threads and many re-watches later.

If you think this might appeal, do watch it and come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But it's a show that needs time. The 2nd lead arrives in episode 3, so you need to give it at least 4 episodes as that’s when the tone changes and the main story starts. It still took me several more episodes to fully appreciate what I was watching, but by then I was hooked and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

I had time to make a detour from Charing Cross Road this morning, so for your enjoyment…. ‘Flicker Alley’/Cecil Court. Lots of lovely bookshops but nothing to match Stede’s artistic feather display.

The only thing I don't like about the Constellationism update is Ed's outfit. ED WEARS LEATHER. Occasionally he is allowed to wear jeans. That is all.

Also, bath seems to be a posher version of this, which we had in a holiday cottage last October. Just putting it here so you can all imagine Ed in it. It's a service I provide.

Sadly in reality it was not great although awfully 'Grammable for those that like that sort of thing. Which I don't!

Ooh sorry - not sure the presence of a posh bath in a Stede-containing hotel room is much of a spoiler though...(especially when Shearwater had actually posted a chunk of it a week back).

Oh right, the photo shoot! I did try to get back that far but I kept stopping at the scene in the layby 👀

I have to admit I wasn't sure about the verdigris outer coating as described by Shearwater (sorry, Shearwater, I do absolutely adore you). But I can't really argue with the general concept of Taika Waititi in a lovely bathtub.

@Phineyj no, no not a criticism 🙂 We knew about the bath from the previous chapter. I mean, it was in my highly-scientific prediction game remember also 🤣 (some of us are trying to avoid the WIP Wednesdays though)

You know what, I'd love a Stede to come home to. Fancy fabrics and lovely biscuits and cups of tea and infinite understanding and occasional total insanity. My DH is excellent at all of these things some of the time but imaginary Stede is a pampering MACHINE.

(And if there could also just be the occasional Ed in the bathtub...)

One of my favourite bits in the whole series is when they're sitting on Annie's sofa and Stede starts to say he loves Ed and Ed stops him. I love that Stede just totally accepts that. Doesn't force it, doesn't sulk, just says "I love being near you" instead. It's lovely. Just like the whole show is lovely. Lovely lovely lovely.

@CarterBeatsTheDevil Stede’s the King of Consent. He’s Connell from Normal People. Funnily enough Ed asks Izzy if he’s read this in Up, Down, Turn Around. Which cannot be a coincidence.

Oh god yes, a Stede to come home to would be completely divine. The care, the attention to to detail, the thoughtfulness... Either the fine fabrics and luxurious touches of S1 Stede or the additional devotion of S2... The utter gorgeousness, the smile, the legs, that chest... Gimme gimme gimme!!!

Btw I've had 3 glasses of wine and a Bailey's and I'm not used to it so I take no responsibility for anything that comes out of my keyboard this evening 🤣🤣🤣🤣
