The off screen noises. So horrifying and heartbreaking.

The reluctance to acknowledge that half-blood Targaryens can be dragon riders was amusing, seeing as 3 of Jace’s grandparents were neither Targ nor Valyrian in any way, and there he is with his dragon.

And as if we needed any further evidence that Daemon’s got issues. I think he basically has AGP.

Rhaenyra's mother was half Targaryen tbf. She and Visaerys were cousins, which is what counts for a healthy, ick-free marriage in this story.

But Aemond, Aegon and Helaena were merrily flying dragons all day long despite definitely having Alicent as their very non-Targ mother.

Oh please don't spoil him for me!

HettySunshine · 16/07/2024 20:25

The very first time we saw the woman that Daemon was intimate with, when she was standing by the window and she looked over her shoulder. I thought she was Daenerys. But she wasn't, was she??

KillingMeDeftIy · 17/07/2024 11:36

I thought she was Aemma and we were looking at Daemon’s hitherto undisclosed passion for her so it came as a surprise to discover she was dear old mum!

LobeliaBaggins · 17/07/2024 12:14

I was so bored by it I went to load the dishwasher and couldn't be bothered to find out who it was.

LoobyDoop2 · 17/07/2024 14:29

I think she might have been several different women- Rhaenyra, then Aemma and finally Daemon’s mum. But I’d have to watch it again.

@TinselAngel sorry, but you see my point- he’s only attracted to close relatives who look pretty similar to him 😂

But that is just being a Targaryen 🤷‍♀️

They're doing a terrible job of building up characters whose fate you care about. GoT had dozens of characters who you wanted to find out about - not just the Starks, but minor characters like Pod, or Sam Tarly. The only character I'm remotely interested in is Rhaenyra, and the only relationship which really matters in between her and Alicent, so whenever the action moves away from her it sags. Ser Criston is so unlikeable that the skirmishes in the war out in the kingdom are also tedious.

MayIDestroyYou · 19/07/2024 09:49

I guess the thing that keeps me watching despite the failure of wit and humour is the fact it’s an entirely MN world. All the wisdom and reflection resides in women, all the crashing about and destruction is committed by, well, the other lot.

The thing that is a drag on both action and reaction is Larys Strong. My heart sinks every time he’s on screen because one knows he will always get whatever he wants - so there’s no tension, just predictable misery and suffering coming for anyone he notices.

(It might be worth embarking on the literature if there’s some guarantee that he comes to a particularly sticky end?)

All the other characters I can think of have more nuanced stories - one minute they’re thriving, the next, not, desperately trying to claw their way out of the mire. Shifting fortunes are interesting, Larys’ invulnerability is supremely dull.

Agree with this.

I actually find all three green children fascinating.

crispy cole is dreadful. Most tedious bore in Westeros.

Oh Simon Russell Beale and Freddie Fox are doing their bit.

Slow Horses has brainwashed me to assume that any character played by FF must be an asshole because he's so brilliantly awful in that, so it's taken me several episodes to warm to him in this.

LobeliaBaggins · 22/07/2024 21:52

God, Daemon is so dull with his visions and sulking.

I agree the dragons are more interesting than the Targaryens.

TheCadoganArms · 22/07/2024 22:11

Have to confess I am having to dig deep to keep interest in this series.

LobeliaBaggins · 22/07/2024 23:06

It was quite a dull episode apart from trying out Ser Steffan to see if he would take! Oops.

Elsbetka · 22/07/2024 23:19

Ugh, @readingmakesmehappy and @MayIDestroyYou you're right about the lack of interesting minor characters and the invulnerability of Larys Strong. I think the latter is well-acted, and I think up til now I've liked him because he has agency and, seemingly, actual power of a sort, but you're right - if he's just going to get what he wants all the time, what's the bloody point?! Trying to think of a comparator in GoT and I can't.

I thought the small folk suddenly getting wistful for Rhaenyra after a few canoes full of vegetables was a bit clumsy.

Harrenhal is dull, although I quite Alys. Mainly because she's not blonde. (Maybe I'd like them all better if most of the wigs weren't so distractingly bad!!)

I presume Rhaena (who I do like) is going to tame the wild dragon in the Vale, so this will up the Blacks' dragon count even further. Why doesn't the second sailor brother also have the white blonde hair - is he also Corlys'?

TheQueenWhoNeverWas · 22/07/2024 23:46

To be fair Larys had a total fail this week.

Reminded me of Blackadder II's
"I would like you Percy.."
"Oh I'm so proud!"
"...would like you to take this letter to Dover where is recently docked the galleon of my old school friend and adventurer Lord Flashheart. He shall be my best man"

Larys has discovered that Aemond is not as gullible as his brother.

MayIDestroyYou · 23/07/2024 00:14

On another (long running radio soap) thread we’d call that a hasty rewrite, @TheQueenWhoNeverWas. Grin They obviously read my Larys critique and realised they must do better …

On the whole I enjoyed Ep 6. Although Alicent still seems to be in a different, far glossier show to everyone else.

The dragon chat up line Cor, I don’t half fancy you! was possibly the second most thrilling scene in the whole season. (Just beaten by the airborne serving up of fried sibling a while back.)

And we have taming of wild dragon to come!

Shoxfordian · 23/07/2024 08:03

I don't really get why the Seasnake's son would be a dragon rider when he's not a targaryen -any thoughts?

Maybe it’s a myth that you have to be Targaryen and something perpetuated by them to keep it specific to their race? Just guessing as don’t actually know!

It's not explained in the book either. I guess because they're both Valyrian families there's been enough interbreeding over the centuries that all Velaryons have some Targ blood.

Maybe Laenor is dead and Addam smells like his brother Sad which is why Seasmoke wanted him.
