Lost Boys & Fairies is a three-part series that starts on BBC1 from Monday June 3 at 9pm with episodes running weekly at the same time.

Lost Boys & Fairies is a powerful new drama on BBC One that advocates for the rights of the gay community to parent a child. It stars Sion Daniel Young as Gabriel, a singer and performer who works at the queer nightclub, Neverland, who adopts a child with his partner, Andy (Fra Fee).

But to truly be able to parent his son Jake, Gabriel must first revisit his own painful past and repair the fractured relationship he has with his own father.

Lost Boys & Fairies features a mix of Welsh language scenes and singing performances as it follows Gabriel (Sion Daniel Young), a singer and ‘artiste-extraordinaire’ who performs at the queer club Neverland in Cardiff.

The drama begins as Gabriel and his partner Andy are encouraged by their social worker, Jackie (Elizabeth Berrington), to attend a special event where they can meet children up for adoption.

It’s there that the couple first come across seven-year-old Jake (Leo Harris). But while Andy, who works as an accountant, is convinced Jake is a great match for them, Gabriel remains hesitant as he struggles with his own painful memories and issues from his childhood and dad Emrys (William Thomas).

but before he can throw himself into parenthood, Gabriel must come to terms with his own traumatic childhood. And part of the process is healing the rifts between him and his own dad

Starring as singer Gabriel, aka Gabe, in Lost Boys & Fairies is Sion Daniel Young. Gabe lives with his partner Andy but things aren't easy.
"Andy and Gabe have a gorgeous relationship. They’ve been together for eight years and are keen to start a family. However, there are lots of things that Gabe has tried to keep under wraps. And as the adoption process gets underway it brings them all to the surface.

Gabe lost his mum when he was a child. The strained relationship with his dad defines his inability at times to manage the adoption process.

The series is incredibly emotive and beautiful written by Daf James, who has gone through his own experience of adoption.

I was floored when I first read the scripts. The overriding theme is love!"

I cried my eyes out, brilliant acting, even the little gestures like the dad almost but not quite grappling for Andy's dad's hand.. The soundtrack was v emotive too. Really felt for Jake's mother like pp. Thanks Blondes for spotting this.

Andy's mum's hand I meant

I thought Jake's mother was a raw and honest and sympathetic portrayal. Having the same demons as Gabe I think helped him to empathise with her which will make him a better parent to Jake. I also questioned whether they would really have placed Jake with a recently relapsed drug addict. However at one point he was told there would need to be two years without relapse before placing and I'm assuming that his stages of grief represented this time period.

Ha though Jake didn't seem to age in those 2 years!

Bit of a continuity anomaly.

Just finished it and I am 😢
Was so sad when Andy died - they did it so well it wasn’t mawkish.
Agree the scene with the birth mother was amazing.
Top marks to all involved. Fa Fee - I would (but he wouldn’t 😆).

As an aside, did anyone else think Andy looked like Jon Snow's twin brother? I was quite disconcerted by it at times.

I sobbed and sobbed at the funeral scene. I thought it was so beautiful. All Gabe's friends around him, and then his dad appeared. Just brilliant.

Berwyn...the flashback to the bath...cue more sobbing.

The Mad World scene was beyond amazing. Sadly, it's not on the BBC Sounds programme.

I hope you can now understand @Blondeshavemorefun why those of us who binged it wanted to chat. It is SUCH a good programme.

Blondeshavemorefun · 20/06/2024 19:33

Oh yes I can understand why

But my threads are always tv pace

I'm surprised no one did a binge thread

All those flamboyantly dressed performers and then his dad in a plain coat.

All those flamboyantly dressed performers and then his dad in a plain coat.

It was partly the visual @SoupDragon that made me sob. The real heart felt wail came from feeling that the dad didn't really approve of Gabe's life choices, therefore wouldn't have been comfortable in that crowd.

But he did it anyway because of his love for his son. And was at the back of the crowd as he wasn't sure his son wanted him there(as he'd been told to go straight to the church).

The love the dad showed for his son was so deep in this action it blew me away. Heck, my eyes are leaking now recalling it. His presence in that crowd said more about his love for his son than his words ever could have done.

mikado1 · 21/06/2024 18:48

I felt torn between the dad who beat him and the dad who appeared there for him, clearly was so fond of Andy and reached for his hand.

MuscariFan · 02/07/2024 09:20

I started this a while back and couldn't get in to it, but chucked episode 2 on last night as nothing else grabbing me. Still didn't really buy in until it became obvious where it was going to go, and from then on I thought it was fantastic. As others have said, the birth mother scene was just fantastic.

I work in socia care and an adoptive parent. I have spent my time sobbing at this. Amazing. When he said 'hello daddy' sobbing
