Lost Boys & Fairies is a three-part series that starts on BBC1 from Monday June 3 at 9pm with episodes running weekly at the same time.

Lost Boys & Fairies is a powerful new drama on BBC One that advocates for the rights of the gay community to parent a child. It stars Sion Daniel Young as Gabriel, a singer and performer who works at the queer nightclub, Neverland, who adopts a child with his partner, Andy (Fra Fee).

But to truly be able to parent his son Jake, Gabriel must first revisit his own painful past and repair the fractured relationship he has with his own father.

Lost Boys & Fairies features a mix of Welsh language scenes and singing performances as it follows Gabriel (Sion Daniel Young), a singer and ‘artiste-extraordinaire’ who performs at the queer club Neverland in Cardiff.

The drama begins as Gabriel and his partner Andy are encouraged by their social worker, Jackie (Elizabeth Berrington), to attend a special event where they can meet children up for adoption.

It’s there that the couple first come across seven-year-old Jake (Leo Harris). But while Andy, who works as an accountant, is convinced Jake is a great match for them, Gabriel remains hesitant as he struggles with his own painful memories and issues from his childhood and dad Emrys (William Thomas).

but before he can throw himself into parenthood, Gabriel must come to terms with his own traumatic childhood. And part of the process is healing the rifts between him and his own dad

Starring as singer Gabriel, aka Gabe, in Lost Boys & Fairies is Sion Daniel Young. Gabe lives with his partner Andy but things aren't easy.
"Andy and Gabe have a gorgeous relationship. They’ve been together for eight years and are keen to start a family. However, there are lots of things that Gabe has tried to keep under wraps. And as the adoption process gets underway it brings them all to the surface.

Gabe lost his mum when he was a child. The strained relationship with his dad defines his inability at times to manage the adoption process.

The series is incredibly emotive and beautiful written by Daf James, who has gone through his own experience of adoption.

I was floored when I first read the scripts. The overriding theme is love!"

I think the house is on Victoria Park Road East in Canton, Cardiff. A 5/6 bed house there, facing the park, will set you back around £600-650k - which is pricey by Cardiff standards.

Andy is an accountant. The suggestion that Gabriel is earning a full time income from singing in gay bars is a little fanciful though!

Fantastic show. Darker than I thought it was going to be to be honest. I thought the actress who played the birth mother gave a fantastic performance.

She did a good job in 'Hidden' as well (very very dark Welsh noir/crime on BBC).

Best drama I've seen in ages. Enjoy!

I also wondered how Gabe earned much of a wage.

The actor playing the club owner/manager (Berwyn?) was excellent as was the actor playing Gabe's dad.

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/06/2024 21:27

Andy's partner in real life is the actor who played Charlie cotton in ee

Bit of useless info

And the lovely claire was bugging me. She was Lola in holby city many years ago

DitzyDoes · 10/06/2024 22:03

This is so sad

Blondeshavemorefun · 10/06/2024 22:07

Oh 🙀🙀🙀

Andy will be ok. He can't die

But the blood seeping from His head onto floor

his mum made me laugh with her sex toys comments 😂😂😂

Shame the dad is so against gay love

Loved the make up scene and Jake in make up

And the cake

It's a wonderful series - shame only one more to go

Didn't like his so called friend making jokes at his expense - I think Jealous as turned him Down and being a dad (dadi)

I noted the comment/spoiler earlier about him and from ee/casualty

But the blood seeping from His head onto floor

wasn't it from a stab wound? There was a knife so I assume someone stabbed him in the stomach.

plus he had blank, lifeless eyes... not good!

Shame the dad is so against gay love

I can't quite get him - he seems to accept them as a couple and he clearly accepts Andy and the adoption. Is it the feminine side of his son he can't deal with? The obvious campness?

spiderlight · 10/06/2024 23:02

Lola!! Thank you - I knew she'd been in something before! Nice to see Marty from Casualty as well.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/06/2024 10:36

@SoupDragon oh was it stabbed. I thought from hitting head against wall

SoupDragon · 11/06/2024 11:12

I'm not sure TBH. It was very fast. One of them definitely had a knife and I thought Andy was stabbed but it could have been a punch or push with no knife.

I'm tempted to watch the last part tonight to find out! I'm not sure I can bear the wait.

I live in Croydon though - maybe Cardiff is less stabby!

Filthycop · 11/06/2024 11:56

one of them had a knife but I don't think he was stabbed - it was the head bang against the wall that brought him down.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/06/2024 12:48

Be strong @SoupDragon Don't binge

Resist till next week

@SoupDragon I really like what they’ve done with Gabe’s dad. I think he struggles with his son being gay being that doesn’t override his love for him. So he accepts him without ever being comfortable - it’s very like one of my straight siblings with our gay sibling.

But I think the father’s comments about “a child needs a mother” aren’t about gay adoption - just about his own failings as a parent when Gabe’s mother died.

SoupDragon · 11/06/2024 13:53

I like how they've portrayed Gabe's dad too. I think it's very realistic.

SoupDragon · 11/06/2024 13:56

I've just rewatched it and I agree that it was his head against the wall. A knife clatters to the floor but he was just pushed against the wall.

He also stops twitching and breathing so it isn't looking good at all.

As an aside, the soundtrack for this is excellent and so well thought out.

Just watched episode 2 , the end of it was really sad 😓

I'm loving all the music though !

Yet gabes dad accepts Andy

Andy's not his son though. I do understand how they're trying to write the character.

Really enjoying this, can't get iPlayer here so forced to watch at TV pace 😁. The only thing that made me a bit uncomfortable was the fact that they've done Jake up as a little girl for the opening scene. No problem later when he's having his nails painted and getting a bit of eyeshadow done but didn't like the big showy child drag number.

pinkyspromises · 11/06/2024 20:33

Anyone else finding the singing cringey?

Thank goodness for iplayer! Skipping them all

Globules · 11/06/2024 20:56

E2...I SAW THE ENDING COMING.

Andy and Gabe were having too much fun on their date. Life felt a little too perfect. Something had to go wrong for Andy, as he's the more stable of the two.

I agree it was a double head bang, not a stabbing.

I love the way Gabe's dad is portrayed, and Gabe's surrogate dad at the club. Two really important figures in Gabe's life.

I'm enjoying the music personally. I wish they had more of the songs on the BBC Sounds programme.

Blondeshavemorefun · 11/06/2024 23:06

I love the singing

But I didn't the first time I attempted to watch it

So def have to be in the mood

We’ve watched episode two now, it was very good and we both liked it, very good representation of introductions, how one person becomes a parent before the other etc. However it is frustating that it has gone down the standard line that nearly every queer story does in the media with an unhappy ending. Yes there maybe a redemption arc between Gabe and his dad as he’ll become him by becoming a widower parent to a young traumatised child, but they’ve missed the opportunity to continue to really show the impact of adoption on children, parents, foster carers and birth parents. It would have still been very good as a generally happy drama.
