I have just seen this in the newspaper. I am so excited, brand new host too.

Controversial but I don’t think Puppet Man deserved to go out. The cream denim dress was a worse disaster.

Cocoon dress was worse

That awful puppet though

Cringed at a Janet and her awful picture

I'd rather not have seen that painting of Janet's....

I think presenter was embarrassed. TMI Janet

Netaporter · 21/05/2024 22:34

Janet’s painting of her ‘free afternoon’😳 Fecking telly gold 😂

Right person went I thought. I’d have given Pasha GOTW I think.

Whoever from the production team thought that the pattern challenge could be done in the allotted time is probably not very popular right now…

TicketyBoo11 · 21/05/2024 22:37

That whole episode was telly gold..Terry Pastry (clearly channelling the Chucky vibe there) and Janet’s afternoon off..go on Jan ✊🏻😂
I feared no one could actually sew during that pattern challenge but they pulled it round..

Theydontknowaboutus · 21/05/2024 23:34

I don't remember a worst first round (they really need to give more time, feels like the programme makers are just trying to engineer jeopardy), but fortunately the made to measure showed lots of promise. Loved the winning duvet dress.

murasaki · 21/05/2024 23:36

The first challenge was like that one on bake off where there wasn't anywhere near enough time and they all produced an uncooked pile of slop. If everyone basically fails, the timings are off.

FriendsDrinkBook · 22/05/2024 08:52

@murasaki I agree. I prefer earlier series as not only did they have more experienced sewists , they also allowed time for them to make something beautifully finished. The skirt was actually rather simple to execute , denim is stable and most of them would have attached a waistband and done top stitching before. But making and opening buttonholes takes time , as does sewing buttons in the correct position. I hope they're allowed more time for future sews.

I agree, I almost turned off.

I'm finding I don't like many of the sewists, or not yet anyway, there are too many 'kooky' characters who are just annoying and trying too hard to attract attention for the wrong reasons (yes Janet, I'm talking about you and your cringey painting).

In my opinion the only presenter who has ever been any good was Claudia, none of the others have come close, including the new guy (like Esme, I've no idea who he is). I find their stupid fillers and puns really scripted and forced, and everyone feels obliged to laugh. I don't really think any of them have added anything to the programme, if anything they just get in the way.

I think the wrong person went home, several of the made to measures were distinctly uninteresting. I like Duvet girl (Sarah?) Pasha, the Guy who is a drag queen as possible winners. I think Don has the skills, but won't manage the time constraints. I like Comfort, just quietly gets on with it.

TheTripThatWasnt · 22/05/2024 10:11

I can't fathom why NO-ONE came close to finishing that skirt passably. Only a few pattern pieces to cut (none of them tricky), very straightforward construction with nothing confusing to get your head around, and no techniques that should baffle anyone competent enough to get on the show.

There was plenty in it to show up flaws (top stitching, level waistband, buttonholes), but I would have expected a few to be done to a decent level, some to be missing/lacking in key areas, and a couple of car crashes, but they were all shocking.

I really hope the pattern challenges improve from here on in, as it's the one where they're all on a level playing field and you're actually comparing like with like.

Some of them got away lightly with their MTM last night, with almost zero fitting needed (a dropped waist with gathered skirt being world's apart from princess seams and godets) - it will be interesting to see how they do when they actually have to make something to fit!
I think the men are at an advantage there, as they are more often (from their background stories) making things for other people, so they're used to fitting someone else. Most of the women are just making for themselves (most of the time).

TheTripThatWasnt · 22/05/2024 10:14

@FriendsDrinkBook - making buttonholes with an automatic buttonhole foot, on a stable fabric is very easy. They use the same machine I have, and it makes buttonholes on denim with no problem at all. I sewed 9 on a loose-weave linen shirt in 15 minutes yesterday (including on a collar and cuffs, where the potential to go wrong is far greater). And they were given one of those fancy Prym presses to put the buttons on. They made a right hash of it!

SoupDragon · 22/05/2024 10:16

How long were they given for the skirt?

TheTripThatWasnt · 22/05/2024 10:17

3hrs 15 I think. Given the low number of pattern pieces and ease of cutting out (and hardly any seams to sew), I think that feels fair (for a challenge - not for anyone doing it at home!)

FriendsDrinkBook · 22/05/2024 10:19

@TheTripThatWasnt ah yes , I missed that they didn't even have to sew the buttons on. I think though that when they're so pushed for time they might have forgotten to change the needle before making buttonholes , this is something I would always do at home when using my mid-range machine , especially after doing topstitching.

Do we know how much time they actually had?

HellonHeels · 22/05/2024 10:30

I was taken aback by the poor standard of the pattern challenge.

Had to laugh at Tablecloth contestant saying she liked to make things out of tablecloths, while wearing what was clearly a tablecloth.

Need to rewatch as I missed the sex picture 😱

TheTripThatWasnt · 22/05/2024 10:41

They wouldn't have needed to change needles? They had only sewn 8 seams and a waistband - the needle would have been practically new. But even so, putting in a new one only takes 30 seconds!

They weren't using thick top-stitch thread for the top stitching - they were using Gutterman 'extra strong' which works really well for top stitching (you can tell because they come on different size reels), so a normal denim needle would have been fine - no need for a top stitch needle.

FriendsDrinkBook · 22/05/2024 10:41

@HellonHeels sex picture aside , she can sew very well. Her fitting was pretty spot on. I can see her going far.

FriendsDrinkBook · 22/05/2024 10:45

@TheTripThatWasnt my machine definitely has its quirks and requires these considerations I'm afraid. But you've said that you have same one they are using so you know best.

Either way , it was a disappointing challenge.

I wonder whether they adjusted the timings for the future pattern challenges based on how badly this one went. I guess they couldn't change it midway through shooting this week!

Do not rewatch for the sex picture.

It is still ingrained on my retinas.

FriendsDrinkBook · 22/05/2024 11:03

@murasaki haha! And do not follow her on Instagram if you wish to avoid sex picture. She posted it a couple of days ago on there.

To be fair it was apparently very hard to get hold of puncture repair kits in lockdown so Miranda Pastry had to stay in her box for the duration.

😂

I wouldn't have minded so much but his idea of "ventriloquism" was to put the dummy's head in front of his own face and speak normally.

HellonHeels · 22/05/2024 11:10

SHAMELESS! 🤣🤣🤣

Chewbecca · 22/05/2024 11:11

I wish they would give an adequate amount of time for the pattern challenge so we can actually judge the quality of their sewing, not just hear a list of what wasn't done.
I was a bit disappointed at Suzy's dress winning GOTW as they stated, it wasn't a perfect fit, though it was a super design. It was a shame Don didn't finish as his was a fantastic fit. I fear not finishing will be his norm. I don't like Janet's style at all but she sewed a great dress. I loved Alex's dress & would love to wear that, but much easier than a fitted dress. I also wondered if she was related to the clown girl from IDM.

Enjoyed the new presenter and Esme's larks.

Rebusmyfire · 22/05/2024 11:19

I'm with you @Chewbecca . GOTW was very wonky and not the same length at the bottom but a clever idea and good design. Smd the pattern challenge needed an extra 30mins. It wasn't fair, there would have been some stunning skirts but not given the chance.

Also thought the creative TShirt winner was a mess and not actually wearable.

Janet can sew. Not my thing but her casual dress fit the briefcase looked pretty neatly put together. Hoping she has no more afternoons off for a while.

Alot of loud personalities this year. Hopefully the quieter ones will start emerging in next few episodes.
