I have just seen this in the newspaper. I am so excited, brand new host too.

Lauren is obsessed with slinky satiny fabrics, even where they don't belong. That has been her undoing.

After this post, we have 24 left in this thread, btw.

I didn't think Alix was "I know best".

She heard the stated brief, which was IIRC "use up to X madras shirts and up to Y metres of calico", and followed the brief to the letter as she understood it. I think she misinterpreted the calico as an optional extra, like when they say, "you can use any additional trimmings from the habadashery" but don't mark you down for not using them.

She fell foul, as contestants sometimes do on the transformation challenge, of the unstated judging criteria that P&E have in their heads: in this case, "the winner will be the one who uses a good amount of both fabrics and combines the two fabrics most effectively". But she got through the week comfortably so no harm done.

Patrick and Guest Judge explained the madras check and the calico and then Esme said "you need to combine these fabrics to make an interesting garment." There wasn't any hidden judging criteria.

Really poor made to measure for week 5.

OutOfTheHouse · 20/06/2024 20:35

I agree with the time being too short, but only for the pattern challenge.
For the made to measure they decide what to make and know the time length.

Brefugee · 20/06/2024 22:45

I do think that some of them try to personalise it too much. For sure you love silky floaty garish fabric. But you're making a Nehru Jacket which requires stiffness. All you have to do is get through to the next round. You don't have to love the things you sew to get there, your final MtM is The Thing you are working towards. surely?

Like the chap doing the harnesses last year. Fine. It's Your Thing. But this is the Bee - give the judges what they want. Show us you can sew.

2Rebecca · 22/06/2024 08:49

I agree. I think that's what's frustrated when the show producers pick contestants due to their "personality" or quirkiness rather than their sewing ability.

Do you remember the amazing dress from a few years ago that unrolled to show a new one underneath it was genius. Nothing of that calibre this year I fear.

Chewbecca · 22/06/2024 15:59

That was the 2in1 dress made by (winner) Asmaa's in last year's final. She was so incredibly talented.

That was the whole premise of the M2M challenge one week wasn't it?

It was the final last year where they all had to do a transformation. Asmaa absolutely nailed it (and I suspect she had a tiny bit of luck on the day - it would have been so easy for something to snag, but she earned her own luck).
