I have just seen this in the newspaper. I am so excited, brand new host too.

Does Luke have preferred pronouns? I haven't noticed! Obviously I've noticed his drag references and the fact that he chose the colour of the trans flag for his fleece. Should I not be referring to him as he?

From the narration over the top of the show I think Luke prefers they/them pronouns

SabrinaThwaite · 29/05/2024 10:19

I’ve just looked at Marcus’ instagram - he makes some amazing kimonos.

I guess I simply haven't noticed it then! I don't have an issue with people wanting different pronouns.

I'm currently trying to make bias binding to edge some reusable shopping bags I've made. I will be (inexpertly) using the bias binding gadgets I bought after watching the first series of Sewing Bee!

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/05/2024 12:49

Unless your shopping bags have a curved edge you could use straight binding. Bias binding is for curves where you need a bit of give in the binding to fit neatly around the curve. Straight binding is much easier to work with for straight edges. When I bind my quilts I use straight binding and mitre the corners.

SoupDragon · 29/05/2024 14:13

Of course there are curves! I don't ever make things easy for myself 😂😂 Never knowingly uncomplicated - that's me!

There are gentle curves where the handles become the body of the bag. I just copied the shape from an existing bag without thinking it through. The first one I made I did manage to put a small rolled hem all the way round but it was a pain.

The seams are all French seams to hide the raw edges.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/05/2024 15:10

You French seamed a bag? Shock I am super impressed. I have yet to French seam anything at all, even though I know it would be a better finish on my summer dresses.

Piggywaspushed · 29/05/2024 17:38

I was poorly so have just caught up now.

Marcus is very talented but potentially lazy?

I loved Don's golf outfit - it actually looked like what they wear.

I was bothered ethically by the cricket whites. They looked brand new! There are charities everywhere that would have loved those, including some in war torn countries , such as Afghanistan. (although that charity helps girls so sadly probably not in operation now ...)

For robustness! I usually only zigzag the edges of stuff but when you're taking stuff in and out of a bag that gets scruffy really quickly. As a bag is only small it doesn't take long.

TellyUsername · 29/05/2024 19:18

I'm behind everyone and haven't read the thread but:
I love Comfort and Don
I'm convinced Janet is a swinger
Pascha is the child prodigy
I would hate to be married to hat guy he seems like a lazy man-child

lollipoprainbow · 29/05/2024 19:55

Didn't really like GOTW either thought there were better ones. Georgie seems to be flavour of the month, don't think Esme likes Janet.

Does it matter if Marcus is ND???

noodlezoodle · 29/05/2024 20:34

I'm sad that Comfort has gone, I found her voice very soothing! Would have preferred to have seen the back of Janet, all the 'nudge nudge wink wink' is very tiresome.

Cocolapew · 29/05/2024 21:07

When they were talking about who the outfits were inspired by did one of them say their god brother?
What is that?

Presumably a guy you share a godparent with. Or someone your parent is a godparent to.

It doesn't matter but when you are surrounded by ND family (though not literally because not many of us like to do surrounding in our family), it's something you notice.

SabrinaThwaite · 29/05/2024 21:23

I liked the way Marcus took on board the advice from the judges about meeting the brief - he reminds me of Tom Rosenthal if anyone watched the recent Pilgrims programme.

He is very like Tom Rosenthal, yes, I can see that.

Edited

if you line them you can a) make them reversible and b) don't need binding :)

Loved Patrick's trousers, as pp mentioned Derek Guy would have approved, although i feel he might have said "if you have belt loops, wear a belt"

Liked and approved of the winning fleece, i too think ND because his way of sewing is like (suspected ADHD) mine. Faffing around with it all, planning it in your head then sewing like a demon to get it finished.

The transformation challenge was annoying, and i have pretty much given up on trying to enjoy/judge it. It is wasteful. those cricket whites were perfectly sericeable.

I am not enjoying Drag-Guy - he only ever talks about that (i rolled my eyes when he said trans-flag-colours, but actually the garment looked lovely). Carry-On woman is irritating i hope she's next to go - her MtM should have been better given she sews her dancing outfits. Don is resolute in not wanting to go fast because he would have less quality. His golf skirt was amazing. I suspect he will be out next week, unfortunately, I'd prefer Janet to go.

Did not agree with Garment of the week. But it was hard to pick one - i liked the javelin outfit best.

CaptainCallisto · 30/05/2024 11:24

I also disagreed with GotW - in addition to the top not fitting very well, the bottom seams on the shorts were really twisted, and the back seam was puckered where the mesh joined the lycra. It was a very complicated design, but had some glaring errors!

SoupDragon · 30/05/2024 11:25

Ah, but that makes them bulkier. These are "shove in your bag" reusable shopping bags.

I think he will sneak by for another week or so as other sewers mess up more than him. I've earmarked him to go both weeks after the pattern challenge but he's then surprised me in the next two challenges and saved himself.

He's not a finalist though (unless he sorts his speed out).

i make mine out of fine-ish fabric - usually line them with offcuts (who am i kidding, i have been sewing for nearly 50 years - i have a MASSIVE stash of fabric) of lining fabric, or even silk. 😂

Brefugee · 30/05/2024 12:34

pp made a good point about how easy it would be to add 30 minutes to each challenge because the editing really cuts out hours and hours.

Maybe they could say X time (as usual) for the challenge. Then they get 20 minutes to tidy up what they have done so far?

PickAChew · 30/05/2024 13:29

Or they could have 20 minutes to read the pattern and sort out what they need before they start sewing. A bit like Taskmaster 😄

I do wish all these shows didn’t now apparently have to start with an 'amusing' skit….

Agree, like all the larking about with cocktails last week - it’s just a bit cringey.
