I have just seen this in the newspaper. I am so excited, brand new host too.

And the Spanish running outfit didn’t fit at the back at all.

@SoupDragon - I agree! The neck of the GOTW was digging into the model and not sitting on the shoulder. Paschas was much better..... (I've not agreed with either choice for GOTW so far!)

I didn't think it looked comfy round the armpit.

PickAChew · 28/05/2024 22:13

The better ones might have got through to the final 5 in previous years, with the wind blowing in the right direction. They really are a poor bunch.

It seems to have disappeared from the Internet, replaced by this year's take part call but I recently spotted a link saying they had extended the application deadline for the 2024 show. I can see why, now.

Thank you! I was thinking exactly the same about the neck, it looked far too tight.

They seem judge design over sewing skill a lot of time.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/05/2024 22:21

I suspect the timing thing is putting off some really good potential competitors from applying. It's all massively edited down anyway so I don't see any reason why they couldn't allow 50% more time for every category, especially the final category, and we'd end up with much more interesting finished garments.

Netaporter · 28/05/2024 22:26

SoupDragon · 28/05/2024 21:57

I think I would have gone with Pascha for GOTW.

I agree. I think she’s been robbed two weeks in a row tbh.

No it didn't and it just didn't look like you could run your best race in it.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 28/05/2024 22:32

I wonder if they think Pasha will be a potential winner and so are holding her back from GOTW to make more of a 'journey'.

I'd be very disappointed if Esme and Patrick went along with that, but I do think she's being downplayed for airtime in the early episodes in the knowledge that her time will come, which is fair enough.

SoupDragon · 28/05/2024 22:42

Was Pascha's just too basic a style? They seemed to like the complexity of the two running kits.

Thepartnersdesk · 28/05/2024 22:42

Could you actually get in and out of the Spanish running outfit?

It looked like he wrapped the yellow trim around at the end and sewed her into it which isn't really an outfit.

It looked good but not sure it would be very practical. Javelin outfit looked the best for doing sports in.

I think they do do that.

You see a lot of the winner but there are some people who, in the early rounds, you almost don’t notice but then they get through to the final 4 or so.

SabrinaThwaite · 28/05/2024 22:56

I really liked Don’s golf skirt, you do need lots of pockets and it looked well sewn. Shame the top was rushed and the whole outfit didn’t shout the GB team.

Pascha’s javelin outfit looked like the real deal.

Not sure an in the zone athlete could get in and out of that outfit single handedly.

Its the biggest race of your life you're not going to be wanting to be faffing about with needle and thread minutes before the race

Don's skirt was excellent. All he needed to do was add red piping or something like that.

Mycatsmudge · 28/05/2024 22:59

They seemed to have prioritised design over sewing skills this year. IMO you can’t hide poor sewing and it makes a garment ill fitting and look terrible irrespective of how good the design is. So the judges have to find someone who has a reasonable balance of both skills.

Halsall · 28/05/2024 23:22

The Spanish running outfit was weirdly baggy over the bust at the front and simultaneously straining over the back strap.

I thought exactly the same re the GOTW - it looked good but the halter strap was digging into the neck.

I liked Don's skirt and Pascha's very well-sewn outfit.

HellonHeels · 28/05/2024 23:38

Halsall · 28/05/2024 21:04

I do wish all these shows didn’t now apparently have to start with an 'amusing' skit….

Agree!

Also the silly messing about by the presenter seems to be starting up. I may just be a humourless misery but it's tiresome.

HellonHeels · 28/05/2024 23:45

Also GOTW wasn't great. I think this show may have peaked 😱

I think Don's outfit was well sewn

NeedWineNow · 29/05/2024 08:13

Morning everyone. I have to say I think the standard doesn't seem particularly high this year, although as DH said, we are only two episodes in. The fleece pattern challenge seemed to have been executed better than the A-Line skirt last week, but some of the made to measures still weren't good I really liked the javelin outfit and Don's golf outfit, particularly the skirt. Shame he didn't enhance it a bit better to fit the brief - the Union flag buttons didn't really cut it - and I think his time management may prove his downfall.

Janet is going to wind me up something chronic if she stays in for much longer; I think either she or Don might be the next to go. Shame for Comfort, but I think it was the right decision.

Will never be able to unsee Marcus' gimp mask.....

deeahgwitch · 29/05/2024 09:07

I too thought Don's outfit looked very professional.
His skirt was beautiful.
He needs more time.
He sacrifices finishing a garment for good sewing.
He can't he rushed. And shouldn't be.
I think they need a little more time.
Nobody stands out.
Which is good for us viewers.

PickAChew · 29/05/2024 09:09

Don is clearly skilled within his own range of previous experience but is like me, slow and precise, and that doesn't get garments finished in the time frame.

I thought Luke might have promise, no matter how tedious his preferred pronouns, but his work is as sloppy as his wonky patch pocket from last week's outfit.

Marcus might make the final 5, if he stops going off piste.

And I guessed Comfort wouldn't get far by the state of the topstitching round the neck of the top she wore last week. You would expect someone who sews for children to have some experience of stretch fabrics.

SoupDragon · 29/05/2024 09:21

Does Luke have preferred pronouns? I haven't noticed! Obviously I've noticed his drag references and the fact that he chose the colour of the trans flag for his fleece. Should I not be referring to him as he?

SoupDragon · 29/05/2024 09:23

Don made a skirt to play golf in. What he didn't make was a team uniform skirt to play golf in.
