Our Flag Means Death: Thread 2. Still utterly brilliant and we are still obsessed!

Ahoy there mateys! Hop aboard our ‘safe space ship’ thread 2, where we can continue to wax lyrical about our favourite show.

If you haven’t yet seen Our Flag Means Death, what are you waiting for? Do go watch it (on BBC iPlayer) and then come back here and join us.

You may have heard that this is a comedy about pirates and think that's not for you. But it’s actually about self-discovery, healing and found-family with a love story at its heart. It does begin as a sort of pirate workplace comedy, but in episode 4 the tone changes and that’s where the main story really starts. The joint leads are both damaged by abusive backgrounds and think they want what the other has. The show is about their healing and their respective journeys. It’s tender, romantic, funny, emotionally intelligent and utterly refreshing. It subverts genre expectations. There is comedy, absurdity and a good amount of heartbreak and despair - sometimes in the same scene! The acting is outstanding (Taika Waititi and Rhys Darby especially). But the writing, music, costumes, sets, the sheer attention to detail – for a show with only 18 half-hour episodes it is still keeping us talking, a full thread and many re-watches later. Can you tell how much I love it?

If you think this might appeal, do watch it, then come back and talk to us. It would be lovely if more were to join our crew. But be aware it's a show that needs time. The 2nd lead doesn’t arrive until the end of episode 3 and that’s when the main story starts. You need to give it at least 4 episodes. It then took me several more to fully appreciate what I was watching but then I was hooked - and had to immediately watch it all over again. If you like Good Omens, What We Do in the Shadows, Ghosts or even Bridgerton, this might be the show for you.

(I’ve kept this spoiler free, but if you scroll down you will no doubt find many, so beware!)

I so want a season three, and I do trust Jenkins knows what he is doing, but there is also an element of be careful what you wish for.

I got worried when Rhys said in an interview something about given what actually happened to them in RL, he couldn't imagine they'd get a happy ending.

But I disagree. I think DJ would have given us a happy ending. He's too enganged with/respectful of the fandom to pull the rug out from under it like that. Hmm - not quite sure either of those terms are right. We know he listens, I suppose I mean. After all, he gave Lucius a line in Red Flags that was all about the fandom:

"We thought you were dead!"
"Yeah - I think a lot of people did" - who is 'a lot'? The fans, of course!.

I’ve never seen anyone over the age of ten so full of joy.

See, I could cope with them dying (they died like two weeks apart, I think irl) if it was gravy basket dying. Like Ed died, but was in the in-between world and could still sort of communicate with Stede somehow. Then Stede joins him and they run an inn in the afterlife. That way they don’t split up, there is separation and angst (we need some of that), and it’s a nod to history. But I need a wedding too. And I’d rather they lived.

My t shirt arrived too!

Is that a Princess Bride quote?

Yes, Princess Bride.

I don't think anyone's ever recognised it, but it amuses me and DH.

I was expecting a fuckery of some sort, with a dramatic excape. I mean, Stede has died once already in front of witnesses, so there's precedent.

Thanks for the recommendation - I've just spent about half an hour looking at trailers and reading reviews - it looks great!!

He really is, isn't he. It's just wonderful. And I love how he's enjoying his new found fame. The latest cryptid podcasts are an absolute blast btw - I was giggling away in the car yesterday evening. He just seems so normal. And the interview he did on Dan's 'Fish' podcast that someone linked on the old thread. That was good fun too :)

My own feeling is that the ending we got was not at all what was originally planned when there was a 3 season arc. I think they would have been together as I believe DJ has said that constantly breaking them apart would get old very quickly.

I think they saw the writing on the wall when the budget was cut so drastically and realised that they couldn't rely on a season three at all and, sadly, they were proved right. Personally I am grateful that they did what they did even if it was massively rushed.

I don't know whether Izzy's fate was always intended to play out in season two but I suspect not.

Welcome, @KindaBinding81. I saw the season one trailer recently. If I had seen that first, I would never have watched the show! 🤣it is so much better than any trailer.

I think you’re right @CarlaH

I also think RD will get to lead another show soon. TW’s busy directing everything so I doubt he’d have time to come back anyway. But I can dream!

I think Izzy was always intended to die at that point - I'm sure I saw something where Con was talking about it, and that it was always the plan and he really enjoyed his death scene. But now I don't know where I saw it.

I have seen comments by DJ that there 'would be no season three without Con' but of course he might have appeared in flashbacks.

Con talked about Izzy flashbacks in the Wee John interview I watched. There was a story something to do with a ring and previous love. It's on Kristians instagram somewhere. If I can find it later I will link it.

Think it may be this one. If I've linked the correct one, it's an interview with Con and Gypsy (S2 costume designer)
