I'm still chuckling at the fact Switzerland accidentally broke their trophy at the end of the winner's performance. A very fitting end to Eurovision 2024, no?!

So no then 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think you knew the answer to that. You were just trying to make a cheap and anti-semitic point. Again.

Absolutely not to be clear, but if it’s a singing competition I do think that’s where the focus should be. I also didn’t agree with the booing of the Israeli singer either, I don’t think that helps anyone 🤷🏻‍♀️

We need a Sam Ryder kind of contestant for the UK! He was just a brilliant singer and performer!

Eurovision needs to apply consistency to how it determines the countries that take part in the contest as well especially if it’s not meant to be a political contest (at least in name!). I’m no fan of picking and choosing!

Edited

Someone put up an interesting interview with Martin Osterdahl of the EBU who said that Eurovision was about the TV companies rather than the governments, so the values of the TV company and whether it behaved independently or was controlled by or in agreement with a government were issues. Not sure that works given the flags and nationalism on display, but I'd prefer zero bans.

Blah12345678999 · 12/05/2024 12:40

I’m hoping it’ll be more about fun next Eurovision!

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 12/05/2024 12:44

It’s wasn’t just the UK that was sleazy.

There was a bloke dressed only in a flesh coloured sock on his penis, wasn’t there?

2Rebecca · 12/05/2024 12:44

It's interesting looking at old Eurovision winners to see the trophy was presented to the song writer not singer. Maybe the singer got one too but it used to celebrate song writing more than it does now. As a child I used to write songs and wanted to write a Eurovision song as it was the only place I ever saw song writing getting a prize

And they came just below us in 19th.

I'm not sure I'd describe that act as sleazy. It was just an all-round piss take of the judges, voting system and EBU rules.

Being as gay as possible was your aim, Olly?
What about aiming for a great song.sung by a good singer?

Exactly. Eurovision has been gay friendly forever. And let’s face it, this years winner wasn’t a proponent of stereotypical straight masculinity either. So what did Olly think he was pushing against?

That great clip on Youtube with Johnny Logan after What's Another Year wins. He gets a handshake but Shay Healy gets the £500 cheque.

I thought that was how Katrina and the Waves won it for the UK actually because the songwriter was from the UK!

I did notice that a lot of the performers this year actually wrote the song as well (or co-write) so maybe that's why?

Darklane · 12/05/2024 13:02

There didn’t seem to be many songs you could hear people whistling in the streets for weeks afterwards like the days of Volare, not much melody in evidence

Ukraine's entry this year has a bit of that - maybe not whistling, but the melody certainly sticks in your head.

I'm glad they were rated so highly. Their song was arguable better than the year they won.

Ukraine's entry was much better than the previous two years. I would have been very happy had they won.

Grammarnut · 12/05/2024 13:07

Apparently Israel won on the public vote. Good for her, the demonstrations outside were appalling.

Absolutely. It was excellent.

Eurovision is the one event of the year that I allow myself to have a wee bet, so I'm extra thankful to Switzerland and Ukraine for making it into the top three. Thanks guys. 😂

She came second, a few points behind Croatia who won it. But it amounts to the same thing - she did great. And I agree with you about the demonstrations.

Thank You, I do want to stress my posts were certainly not targeted towards that. I do question Russia’s exclusion, maybe it is fair but I do think the focus should be on the music. I also think that’s why I didn’t agree with the booing for Israel if that was due to the political situation (admittedly I didn’t see the performance though!), I do also think the conflict is very sad and there are unfair misunderstandings of both sides esp where innocent ppl are concerned 😕 I don’t hate anyone!

RedToothBrush · 12/05/2024 13:18

I've now completely tuned out of all the Palestine v Israel stuff because quite frankly, it's alienated me in its extremism on both part.

I'm just now no longer receptive to the emotional blackmail.

I booked my flights to Copenhagen before it even happened. I was going to see my friend who lives in another country as much as the contest. I wasn't about to abandon that on some moral crusade that is virtue signalling to the abyss of social media.

There was clear harassment going on of some contestants due to their political beliefs and they didnt have the same level of protection. Having seen, in person, the police escort of the Israeli contestant returning from rehearsals, then yes I do think there are massive questions about the appropriateness of it all too.

I'm just so sick of it.

I feel there was a deliberate hijacking of the event by BOTH Palestinian supporters and Israel for propaganda purposes.

Speaking to people throughout the week and being in the stadium I think this was probably a majority of the crowd - the true 'silent majority' that again is trying to be hijacked as a phrase.

It felt like getting dragged into someone else's domestic issue.

I do care that civilians are getting hurt and I do want peace. Both the Israelis and Palestinian leadership have zero interest in this tbh. They don't give a shit about their own. None of them do. This isn't going to gain support from any neutral. It just pisses off. All of it.

If you want to make a point and get support then this is a good way to have exactly the opposite effect. Slow handclap.

Thank you for the video @YaMuvva that was a fab little trip down memory lane.

In terms of combination of artist, staging and song my all time winner was robbed. I bloody loved Russia’s Sergey Lazarev’s You Are The Only One and the staging of that will probably never be beaten for me. His song Scream in 2019 I adored too. Måns is my second favourite artist for the a,s and s. Now it’s all about another type of ass.

Finland cheers me up and mostly they embrace the cheese.

I may be very naive and wouldn’t be able to hold my own in a discussion re world politics but Eurovision is, and will always be all about the music for me.

it brings me so much joy. It’s the one night of the year I really look forward to. I’m truly sorry if this post offends anyone, given the seriousness behind this year’s event. I don’t mean it to.

That was Finland who did it with a sense of humour. The UK number was just sleazy and embarrassing.

@RedToothBrush Did you spot the snipers on the roof? Been to that arena many times, the security last night was like nothing I’ve seen before.

Sad with the booing.
