Just lost 25 minutes watching that video recapping all the winners. The 60s and 70s had some fantastic songs - I love Dana and the Spanish one that just goes La La La La!

Johnny Logan has a beautiful voice.

Interesting how there weren't really any dancers or anything until about the early 2000s.

I'm sorry I have to step in here and ask you where you are getting your information from?

I am a Palestinian myself- from the West Bank. No one from my family has been thrown off roofs- my cousin is queer and actually, counting the women on my mum's side, we outdo the men in the family in terms of degrees( undergraduate and postgrad)

Dresscode is akin to Europe. Yes I don't walk around half naked but I probably would not anywhere, so it's moot metric. And come to think of it, (alot of Gazan teen girls dress the same as many others in Europe actually reflecting back)

I find it quite laughable that this is the line of argument some people have to justify a military occupation and illegal settlements and killing civilians.
And about the LGBTQ thing - it is such a crux from some people, which is ridiculous.
-Being Gay, is not accepted in ANY abrahamic religion so don't even start
-The United States still has conversion therapy- it is 2024.
-Gay Marriage was only recently accepted in some countries in Western Europe
-Homophobia and LQBTQ+ phobia is still a problem in the UK.
-Abortion is illegal- Wow, what have you got to say about abortion rights in the US?
-How many of you have travelled to UAE or Turkey on Holidays? Not LQBTQ+ friendly technically are they? But this is hill you choose to die on when justifying the killing? Really?
-If this thread had started in 1981 do you think you'd stick to your point? We cannot come across as holier than thou. We all need to do better.

BUT
-Social Progression cannot happen under oppression

It's like you are expecting a starved and abused dog to do better then blame it for every shortcoming

Drinking alcohol can get you put in jail? Ooops do you think my Palestinian Christian neighbours in Ramallah know? Crap- I should check on them.

Utterly ridiculous line of argument.

Also, as it appears there are gaps in understanding- Where my family are from, the West Bank is NOT GAZA. The illegal settlements are encroaching on us daily; we find the settlers insufferable because of the psychological torture they put us through and we can't count on the military t help us because they are their personal entourage.
The Palestinians in EJ are NOT GAZA.
We are faced with very very different issues than the ones they face in Gaza.
The root problem is the occupation.

Please remember that Israel proper houses a small percentage or Arab Israelis. but its control extends beyond Israel 'proper' into the WB and whilst yes many Arab Citizens of Israel have many rights, the rest of us live under occupation

Hoping for peace for all of us one day soon :)

I have never said anyone gets chucked off a roof. Someone else has, but it wasn’t me (I wouldn’t claim that anyhow as I haven’t seen it or heard it from credible sources).

I also did not say the West Bank was in Gaza.

But you cannot possibly be saying that I am wrong about all the things that are illegal in Palestine? I’m also not sure why you’re comparing it all to the USA - someone was saying that the rights of people in Israel are the same as the rights in Palestine, and that’s not true.

No I wouldn’t go to UAE or Turkey on holiday. Largely because of oppression but also because it’s way too hot in both places 😂

I hope you find peace too - and I do so greatly wish for a 2 state solution as I am not in favour of ethnic cleansing on any side. Sadly the governments on both sides don’t seem to want this, from where I’m sitting anyway. It’s horrific and obviously both nations have a finite number of people, I do wonder how many more people have to die before the conflict ends.

AhBiscuits · 12/05/2024 11:53

Just watched Croatia again and it was brilliant. A big engaging performance. The crowd were going nuts and singing and dancing along. They were never going to do that to ours. I read that for the first 2 minutes most of the crowd couldn't even see him because of the box. It means there's no excitement or atmosphere. You need to get the audience going.

I also forgot about Diva International- that was released when I started going clubbing (underage 🙊) so many memories!

I'm sure Eurovision release the actual votes each song gets at some stage. Or have I imagined that? It's quite interesting to see that breakdown and see how close or not some songs were.

I didn't hate the UK's song - it's got an earworm chorus. It was just a weak performance. Plus, the UK may seriously not have wanted to stage it again. Whoever advises the performers about these things may have left it that way thinking, 'Phew, that's us in the clear for another year.

They do.

It's on their main website but this is actually a better representation of the same information

I knew the Zionist vote would be high, but really?

You seem a little confused. It’s a singing competition. The public liked the singer and the song both of which were beautiful unlike half the rubbish performed tonight. Only antisemites make the leap to Zionism.

"I said right in the beginning of this process, I plan to be as gay as possible – and what’s gayer than a locker room?”

I am just as put off by female writhing bodies as male ones. Doesn't matter to me that it is a 'gay thing'. But no-one seems to have read the room here and realised that this staging might have offended huge swathes of conservative, and largely Catholic, Europe. Especially the south of it.
The viewing public certainly voted with their feet anyway.

Being as gay as possible was your aim, Olly?
What about aiming for a great song.sung by a good singer?

Indeed
Its possible his lack of priorities for a good song sung well came through in his performance.

Still he didn’t deserve nil points from the public vote

Well yeah, this. ^ I have no issue with any LGBTQ people at all, but why was it necessary to be 'as gay as possible?' As some posters have said, some people across Europe don't like it. That is their right. The way the song was presented/staged was awful to be honest, and I think it made Olly struggle to sing well. He sounded a bit off key to me.

Don't care about the 'gayness' but the seediness was horrible.

An 80s themed rollerdisco to something even poppier than Starstruck!

velvetydogtoy · 12/05/2024 12:19

Olly's staging was sleazy (what possessed him to go with that scenario?), his singing was third rate, and the song was awful anyway

This.

Yeah I don't think anyone objects to gayness in Eurovision, the winner was a bloke in a pink skirt after all.

Agreed. I couldn’t go to friends last night to watch as I’m not well. Dh went with dcs but I followed on group chat. Some were surprised Israel were allowed to compete, rest said it’s singing competition and liked the song so voted for them. Also most preferred Croatia to Switzerland.

Russia invaded Ukraine. A war ensued. Hamas/Palestine invaded Israel - slaughtering, raping, murdering young people at a music festival. A war ensued. HTH.
