Yeah, Graham kept trying to insist Olly was brilliant when it was actually out of tune by 1000 miles and crap.

I wonder if Graham just CBA anymore with the pep he’s supposed to display 🤣

Even when the UK last won Eurovision, it was a performance from an American on our behalf, and pre the entry of the individual countries that made up the dissolved Eastern European blocks. We are the baddy of Europe in the eyes of most Europeans. We don't have any particular allegiances the way the former Eastern bloc countries do. Sam Ryder was a blip, based on our response to the Ukrainian refugee crisis, imo, and despite him being a genuinely lovely, charismatic and talented bloke, I don't think he would have won or come second but for the Ukraine crisis.

Were Katrina and the Waves American?😧

Given the Israeli government spent MILLIONS on their Youtube propaganda trying to justify their genocide, I don’t think it’s unthinkable they would spend money on televotes.

Proof?

On which bit?

They were indeed.

He'll have been given his orders to say nothing.

Because apparently it’s depressing that the only Jewish state in the contest did well. Presumably the 20yo just wants to be a pop star and is not affiliated with Netenyahu but it’s ‘depressing’ she did well.

I have family and friends living in Israel. I find it very narrow minded that people assume Israeli citizens are supportive of Netenyahu. I don’t know one who isn’t horrified by him on some level - the same way I am ashamed of our Government. But I wouldn’t like to be punished on a professional level for the Tory’s actions. So I can’t understand why regular Israelis are getting bullied for living in Israel.

To the anti-Israel people on this thread - have you ever even spoken to anyone from Israel?

Seriously, stop projecting. I disagreed with the 300 something points for the song and I have not commented on anything political. You are going out of your way to invent intentions here.

Anglo American. Katrina and the other founding member was American. The band line up changed from time to time. I don't think it's unusual for singers from one country to compete for another. Celine Dion (Canadian) sang and won for Switzerland.

His tongue biting tonight was a study in restraint, I thought.

Which highy political issues are present in Switzerland's and Ireland's song?
Now, to plan for next year's contest!

I don't understand the public voting system. I don't believe that <no one> in the whole of Europe voted for the U.K.

does anyone know how the votes that go on the board are calculated?

I live in Ireland and I voted for the UK.

Well I live in the UK and I voted for Armenia but presumably no one else did, or at least not in large enough numbers to register on the popular vote, which is what's required. I guess the same thing happened to your Olly vote.

Spot on !

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 12/05/2024 00:49

It said on the news that the Irish singer had some sort of ceasefire message on her costume/body decoration originally, but had to remove it for the final.

The Swiss song about being non binary is political insofar as LG/BTQ+ rights issues are very much so at the moment.

DysonSphere · 12/05/2024 00:50

I see😲

Which leads me to question why America doesn't have it's own song competition among all the states, including maybe affiliated countries like Canada, Mexico some of the other South American/Carribbean countries...

GordonBlue · 12/05/2024 00:51

Because it would be fucking carnage, probably.

terrywynne · 12/05/2024 00:53

There were adverts in Times Square and on YouTube encouraging voting for the Israeli entry. There was certainly an effort to raise awareness of the competition and voting that I don't believe other countries were engaged in - that may have helped Israel get votes from people who wouldn't otherwise get involved with Eurovision (especially in the Rest of World votes). I wonder if other countries will follow suit next year. There certainly seems to have been a rise in pre event promotion in recent years - at least I don't remember so much promotion in the 90s/00s but maybe it passed me by. It kind of seems to be heading the way of the Oscars where you need a big campaign to get votes.

Sparklybutold · 12/05/2024 00:53

Ireland - 'Bambi' stripped down to a trans patterned bikini. Switzerlands song was about being non-binary.

The LGBT bollocks is politically, yet was given the green light?

AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2024 00:53

I’ve seen Years and Years (back when it was a full band and not just Olly) a few times and they were absolutely fantastic- really greater than the sum of their parts. Olly doesn’t have a powerful voice though, and when he wobbles or goes flat there’s just no disguising it. I’m not sure he really has what it takes to succeed with it as essentially a solo project, and this certainly will not have helped!

mollyfolk · 12/05/2024 00:53

Berlinlover · 12/05/2024 00:45

Me too. Gotta throw the Uk a vote from Ireland - it’s tradition! I thought it was a good song but he didn’t sing it well and it felt a bit ick with the toilet setting and the leather penis covers 😅. Not deserving of 0 public vote though. The brexit effect?

Mymilkshakebringsallthepapstomycar · 12/05/2024 00:54

I don't know @DysonSphere . I saw a programme a few years ago about how the USSR had its own version of a Eurovision style competition amongst the different states.

PossumintheHouse · 12/05/2024 00:54

Anywayyyy... is nobody going to focus on the fact that the right act won, for once?

TabithaTimeTurner · 12/05/2024 00:54

So the entire public vote in the uk went to Israel? That tallies with public opinion of course

Just popping my head around the door to say yes it tallies with most people’s opinions I know. Also friends/family voted for Israel tonight (as well as a few other acts) so no please don’t blame ‘bots’ for voting for Israel, we are real people.

You do know a few hundred people marching every Saturday don’t represent the silent majority’s/public opinion, don’t you?

Anyway fwiw I liked Switzerland’s song 😀
