Exactly, she’s 20, not 5! Free speech doesn’t equate to freedom from consequences, and if being booed is the result then so be it.

So you support a woman who has nothing to do with Netenyahu being bullied and harrassed?

Pathetic and embarrassing

Funny how a 20yo Jewish woman should know better but elsewhere on MN 20yo women are described as children

AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen · 12/05/2024 00:12

@Coshei i reported it too as hate speech.
But MNHQ rarely take these sort of posts down I’m afraid. We’ll wait and see.

Which part of it was hate speech?

Elephantswillnever · 12/05/2024 00:15

I quite liked the winning song, there was something a little bondesque about that chorus.

CelesteCunningham · 12/05/2024 00:15

Foggyfield · 12/05/2024 00:06

Did it happen in the past when there was likely to be strong political views influencing it? What percentage did Ukraine get of the public votes in the year the war started with Russia?

I'm guessing they also got a large percentage of the public vote.

But some have always struggled with the fact that the silent majority may disagree with the current opinion de jour from social media.

No idea I'm afraid, don't know if they actually release the votes to that extent normally.

But as someone who understands numbers I would be very sceptical of any vote share of that size in any country - especially when there isn't any particular connection between the countries. It's not like Israel and Italy are close neighbours with a massive overlapping population.

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 00:15

pootlin · 11/05/2024 23:58

I guess Eurovision does represent the views of Europe in that respect.

What a venal society.

Venal society because some of us won’t partake in racism?

OK then

SocksAndTheCity · 12/05/2024 00:16

pootlin · 12/05/2024 00:12

But you’re agreeing with someone saying voting should be based on the music, and then contradicting yourself by saying she should get the points because of politics.

No, I'm saying that contestants in a song competition should not be subjected to bullying behaviour, and whilst I voted based on the songs I liked I can completely understand why others will use their votes as a statement because they take exception to this too.

Now give it a rest, ffs. You'll have to find another bone to gnaw on anyway, because I'm going to bed.

JemimaTab · 12/05/2024 00:16

Croatia were my favourites - the Swiss song was OK for me, but I didn’t get why it ran away with the jury vote to such a degree. It was nice to see France do so well, I wasn’t expecting that.
The 0 public vote for the UK is pretty humiliating. But I don’t think it’s necessarily that everyone hated Olly’s act, just that they preferred other acts that made more of an impression. It was pretty underwhelming - the song was very generic, he didn’t sing it well, and the staging just looked a bit grotty and didn’t come across as amazing at all (despite Graham / Rylan insisting that it was).

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 00:17

InTheUpsideDownToday · 11/05/2024 23:58

You can vote up to 20 times for each act.
It's 15p a vote. Money.

Yes we know, but how does that prove the Israel votes were bots?!

Fernticket · 12/05/2024 00:17

Well, the European public loved the UK entry didn't they!!. Nil Points, nil, bloody points😞

Chocolatecoveredshitpig · 12/05/2024 00:17

There's only one thing for it next year...as we've all seen, you can enter, (and win), as many times as you like, (Johnny Logan, Loreen), so surely our only hope of redemption is to persuade, (or beg), Sam Ryder to give it another go?? Europe loves him!

Coshei · 12/05/2024 00:17

AngeloMysterioso · 12/05/2024 00:11

You’re all upset that she did well and saying its disgraceful that she got so many votes, and it’s not because you don’t like her voice, it’s not because you don’t like the song, it’s not because you thought it was a bad performance - it’s because you don’t like where she comes from.

There. Does that explain it clearly enough for you or do I need to get out the crayons?

I said no such thing.
I said “depressing”, and look at your wild and
ott interpretation of it. This is seriously unhinged so maybe take a step back.

ilovesooty · 12/05/2024 00:17

I really wanted Croatia to win but I'm not too unhappy with Switzerland. It would have been highly problematic for organising if Israel had won. I think their song was pretty mediocre and if it had been entered by a country like Slovenia it wouldn't have got many votes at all.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 12/05/2024 00:17

It's fairly easy to see that with up to 20 votes per person with 25 to vote for that everyone could vote for their favourite few and these will be spread across all the contestants as people have different favourites and then if the majority of people give Israel a sympathy vote because they feel sorry for the performer then Israel comes out as the winner. No need for bots or conspiracies.

Crikeyalmighty · 12/05/2024 00:17

@AGovernmentOfLawsNotOfMen and that is totally my point- the contest is no longer about songs- I personally thought they were all dire

FelineGood76 · 12/05/2024 00:18

Yeah, Graham kept trying to insist Olly was brilliant when it was actually out of tune by 1000 miles and crap.

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 00:18

CelesteCunningham · 11/05/2024 23:58

Because in a competition of 15 countries (the semi final) it is very unlikely for any country to receive 40pc of the vote.

Unless people are speaking out against hate and racism. I know people sick of bullying towards Israel who voted For them. I did but I did think she was the best - Croatia a close second. Gutted for Baby Lasagna

Given the Israeli government spent MILLIONS on their Youtube propaganda trying to justify their genocide, I don’t think it’s unthinkable they would spend money on televotes.

YaMuvva · 12/05/2024 00:19

Lonelycrab · 11/05/2024 23:58

It's turned into a load of camp utter baloney- I work in the music business- the songs are in my opinion all shit

This is unfortunately correct. There’s a whole planets worth of good music to be had, but it’s not to be found in this competition. Sure, it’s spectacle, but this really isn’t good music.

So the entire public vote in the uk went to Israel? That tallies with public opinion of course Hmm

Perhaps people don’t equate supporting a 20yo girl with supporting Netenyahu

Perhaps they’re also sick of the sneery comments

I thought the same. Delighted the song won.

CarnDûm · 12/05/2024 00:19

To those that want to remove the jury vote, are you forgetting that once upon a time it was only public voting and everyone was whining and moaning about how political and unfair the system was?! Greece voting for Cyprus, Cyprus voting for Greece and Eastern Europe voting among themselves.

There is a reason Juries were introduced and that's to battle the politics and to try and even the field. You might have disliked the Swiss song but Nemo's performance was amazing and I can see why juries rated it high.

SloaneStreetVandal · 12/05/2024 00:19

You'd never guess from the UK's piss poor record at Eurovision that five out of the top ten best selling music artists of all time are from the UK 😂
Olly has already sold more music than any of the other acts ever will (flummoxed that he even agreed to do Eurovision, and the weird direction he's taken 😕 he did some brilliant tunes as Years and Years, he should've stuck with them. He seems to just be apeing Sam Smith now. Bizarre).

There was no particular connection between Ukraine and all of the countries that awarded them the highest in public votes either was there?

I think a lot of people voted out of sympathy and to show support that year, even ones that didn't usually bother voting.

It was the other way around. It was a jury vote only for decades and then they brought the public vote in.

I'm very glad Israel didn't win as well. Nothing against that young women and the bullying she got was horrible. But can you imagine if Israel had won? And they were hosting in Tel Aviv next year? I think it's highly likely the war in Gaza will still be ongoing or it will be under brutal Israeli occupation. Can you not see how problematic that would be?

Well it wasn’t a reason for Ukraine to not win in 2022
