This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

I appear to be a lone voice on Mumsnet. Loved the first two episodes but episode three was very poor.

Not totally lone. I enjoyed the first two. They didn't feel like Dr Who; but I enjoyed them as their own thing anyway.
Actually, I enjoyed aspects of today's one. But, it felt short, and lacked enough substance or something. I don't know. But, anyway, thought I'd keep you company!
I often enjoy things that have had bad reviews! 🤭

Is it me or are the episodes shorter? I thought they were usually an hour but looking at the time on bbc1, it was 6.50pm to 7.35pm

Maybe shorter to make room for commercials?

Binglebong · 18/05/2024 22:00

Mundy has just turned up. I'm bored of the landmine.

Binglebong · 18/05/2024 22:17

Meh.

Binglebong · 18/05/2024 22:18

And what's will this looking into the camera?

You mean on Disney? Are there commercials on there because I don’t have it

JaninaDuszejko · 18/05/2024 23:06

No adverts on Disney.

Loved this episode. A good stand alone tight episode.

Next time we see Susan Twist we'll get more of her plot I'm sure. She said nothing in the anniversary episode, had a single line in the first episode of this season, spoke to the doctor in the second, then as the ambulance had interactions with both Ruby and The Doctor in the third. One of them will remember her next week.

Thinking about the snow, there was malevolent snow in Clara's first episode. The Eleventh Doctor stated that snow could remember, although it existed only as a mirror. Also, we've seen suspended snow before when the Testimony Foundation froze time.

Macbeff · 18/05/2024 23:06

Not an all-time classic but really good story, with a clearly much better script. Felt like Doctor Who.

My only slight criticism is the CGI / effects at times - I was never wholly convinced they weren’t on a set in a studio. However, didn’t detract from the episode.

xsquared · 18/05/2024 23:44

I'm late to the party, and I've only watched the first two episodes of this series.

First episode, I fell asleep half way, amd the second one was just like watching a pantomime performance for me. Granted, it was based on music, but how many episodes are they going to have of villains breaking out in song and dance?

I had high hopes but I'm extremely disappointed ams this whole cringe fest, which has so little to do with Doctor Who.

GwenogJones · 18/05/2024 23:53

I stopped watching after Clara left - but I just started watching An Unearthly Child which was linked earlier in the thread. In Susan's first appearance she is listening to music which is John Smith and the [somethings - I cant work out what she says] and Mr. Chesterton says John Smith is the stage name of the hon Aubrey Waites who started his career as Chris Waites and the [something - he is equally indistinct].

This popped out at me as I had seen people talking about the one who waits and Chris Waites (and Susan) on this thread.

There was too much in Moffat’s episode (or it was too short, one or the other).

Blink and HS and Listen and The Silence in the Library double were good in part because of the sense of being trapped.

With Boom, I guess he wanted similar feelings but the claustrophobia was less as there were too many stories (dad/splice; mundy/splice; ruby/peril; mundy/casto etc)

No, but are they going after any other markets where there are? Or where there are shorter run times for shows?

Other possibilities - cutting costs, or cutting filming time for a given number of episodes.

Or compensating for shorter attention spans. In general now it seems like you have to have much more action packed tv compared even to 25 years ago.

GardenMusings · 19/05/2024 05:28

I do think the girl would be more in shock/unhappy about her dad dying. Rather than happy to continue with the episode....

But Part from that I did rather enjoy it as Proper Dr Who.

KomproMatilda · 19/05/2024 08:40

But it’s a different civilisation to ours, @GardenMusings, even though they’re human. A culture where the merging of military and religious professional hierarchies is culturally fundamental is surely one with a very different theology - and probably epistemology and cosmology as well.

Although I’m not sure that was conveyed logically in the episode! Because Mundy was clearly upset at the death of Canto …

SheilaFentiman · 19/05/2024 08:54

Agree @KomproMatilda - the girl believed her mum and dad were with god. Perhaps as an adult Mundy saw it differently

Yes, that's what I felt. Too many stories in a short time, so it felt rushed.
I still thought it had many good points, but not my favourite episode... or my worst...

I've looked at a few random episodes from prior series on iPlayer and they are all around 45 minutes. (From Eccleston on, I didn't look at original ones)

Specials might have been an hour though.

Edited

Really? Maybe they were all 45 minutes but I never noticed before which is highly likely lol

SoupDragon · 19/05/2024 10:33

I had a feeling they weren't a full hour. I remember them being slightly odd for a BBC programme.

Or Mundy was upset because she missed the chance of the relationship with him. They were in the middle of talking about their feelings and it abruptly ends. It makes sense in that context. Splice was comfortable and content in the love of her dad, he hasn’t gone to her. That didn’t jar for me.

i enjoyed that episode. I want more of the doctor being really doctorey.

KomproMatilda · 19/05/2024 18:04

Yes, I guess that makes sense, @BritishBeatleMania.

I suspect either the make up department or the photography people will be keen to have tears rolling down NG’s beautiful face as often as possible!

Rummikub · 19/05/2024 19:09

I liked boom.

Yes I thought Mundy was upset at what could e been especially as they were just talking about liking each other.

Macbeff · 19/05/2024 20:06

The fact that Mundy is the new companion in the next season completely went over my head.

Rummikub · 19/05/2024 20:20

Ohhh is she?! I did not know that.
