This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Yes. Absolutely superb episode. I still think of it every time I see an angel in a churchyard etc.

I still feel compelled to stand behind dd in a weeping angel stance. Except it didn’t go down too well last time I did it 😬

I used to do that too 😂😂

The worst thing was when I hid the dolls house people in DS2's room ...

My sister and I used to play Weeping Angels, actually we probably still would.

Stand at opposite ends of the corridor and the Weeping Angel has to move every time the other person blinks.

Continue until the other person is sufficiently unnerved that she asks you to stop!

My sister once pretended to be a clockwork droid. I stopped her in her tracks by "taking the batteries out". I got a safe distance away before taking the piss out of her for thinking clockwork droids needed batteries...

I've not watched 3, but am surprised by all the Moffat love. Yes, he had some great episodes, but the show went into real decline under his leadership, not RTDs - the increasing problems in the Matt Smith era, and Carpaldi's largely dire scripts, happened under him. And much the same issues that in the end made much of Sherlock unwatchable.

He's good on single episodes but not whole series. And his women are typically badass sex-boss type.

My inclination is to think that when a show keeps needing to bring back old actors, show runners, and writers, to try and "revive" it, it is a bad sign overall. Something important is missing.

KomproMatilda · 18/05/2024 14:56

Now, that was a different league of episode. That was a proper season opener.

Just watched Ep 3. I am all shaken up and disturbed. And intrigued. And honestly thrilled.

Halleluja!!!

I said the same just today. Although I never got around to watching post-Capaldi Who and probably won't, I do know people who still watch and aren't overly impressed. Maybe the show would benefit from a long hiatus, or even a reboot.

Incidentally, I'd love a rebooted version of Torchwood.

LlamaDuke · 18/05/2024 15:27

I thought the acting was fine, and there were some decent moments in both episodes. I really like the relationship between the Doctor and Ruby, but thought the song and dance routine at the end of episode two was a bit too much.
On the plus side, this coming week's episode has been written by Stephen Moffatt, so I'm hoping for a bit more peril rather than goofiness..

siameselife · 18/05/2024 15:29

This is what 16yr old dd said. She used to like it but struggles to watch it now as she thinks she has missed too much important backstory.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/05/2024 15:43

I'd like another series or to of proper torchwood (not Children of Earth, and that other series... which I thought was good in a doomsday, thriller sort of series way, just not Torchwood)

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/05/2024 16:13

Slow to the party but episode 1 was perfect for an audience who had never watched before - a young Disney audience. It had the jokes, the monster etc.

Episode 2 was much better and Jinkx Monsoon was a brilliant villain. I even quite like the dancing - it's Ncuti Gatwa - it's going to be camp as anything, he's brilliant!

I just hope we get some meatier stories. Hints of the Harbingers return, Mrs Flood and Susan, the twist at the end. There's enough to keep me a little interested

You may be right. I don’t think RTD can write women at all though. And the ones he does write are usually played by men…

Starlight7080 · 18/05/2024 16:38

I managed half an episode . Felt like I was watching one of my kids shows on cbbc .
Also loved the show since I was a child .

AprilPoisson · 18/05/2024 16:55

Episode 3 was much better.

TripleDaisySummer · 18/05/2024 16:59

Third is better - better script better acting mostly - bit over maudlin in places and yes more Dr WHO - still wouldn't say it was great episode but would have been a better season opening than the first two.

It certainly had moments but still felt weak compared to pervious generations (ignore Whittard entriely) - political points aren't subtle and solution to episode bit weak IMO.

Next weeks looks intriguing.

AprilPoisson · 18/05/2024 17:11

Any idea where in Wales they are?

GardenMusings · 18/05/2024 19:06

Wow thought episode 3 was great. Raises issues, made me sad, genuinely wondered where it was going rather and. I actually watched it. Best I've seen in a while.

Ponderingwindow · 18/05/2024 19:19

Loved Boom. The last 2 minutes were a bit cheesy, but I can forgive that.

we had a great family discussion about the role of religion and history after the episode. DD is just starting with this season. She felt intimated by the backlog of episodes so this semi-reboot is perfect. Plus to be honest, the inclusion of characters like Rose helped. Her peer group refuses to watch anything they deem not sufficiently diverse. so she was not familiar with the through line of the religious soldiers in the whoniverse

No Bolllywood for them I guess!

suburburban · 18/05/2024 19:35

Love his Scottish accent, dh said I was imagining it

JewelleryCat · 18/05/2024 19:35

Is it me or are the episodes shorter? I thought they were usually an hour but looking at the time on bbc1, it was 6.50pm to 7.35pm

choirmumoftwo · 18/05/2024 19:37

I appear to be a lone voice on Mumsnet. Loved the first two episodes but episode three was very poor.

Pixiesgirl · 18/05/2024 19:41

I thought the third ep was much better than the first two. Basically a Moffat greatest trope parade, but watchable. Still interested.

InMySpareTime · 18/05/2024 19:51

Susan Twist is listed in next week's episode as "hiker", there must be more to her by the end of the series.

Pieceofpurplesky · 18/05/2024 19:51

There's always a Twist at the end, I find that quite joyful
