Doctor Who

This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

Ohhh is she?! I did not know that.

Well, it’s the same actor - whether it’s the same character I’m not sure.

Binglebong · 19/05/2024 21:00

It would be nice to have a companion who's not from the here and now.

nocoolnamesleft · 19/05/2024 21:46

Well, it was rather better than the first two.

Rummikub · 19/05/2024 22:10

Susan twist was the ambulance.
I wonder what her part is.
she’s a common thread
as is the snow.

Willmafrockfit · 20/05/2024 09:14

i enjoyed the third one,
although it was strange at the end.

NoOneFellOffTheirChair · 20/05/2024 09:37

I tried Boom after looking at this thread and seeing the more positive opinions. It was more like the Dr Who of yore. There was only one reference to anyone’s sexuality which was a blessed relief, and Ncuti Gatwa is a million times more believable a Dr Who than Jodie Whittaker for me. I liked Ruby too. The plot was poignant and thought provoking without being way too complicated for me. Bit of an overly sentimental ending for my taste, but I really enjoyed the rest of it. Plus a very sophisticated set and FX. Not a wobbly block of styrofoam in sight. Overall, very nicely surprised.

KomproMatilda · 20/05/2024 09:59

Actually, thinking about it - Jodie would have been good in ‘Boom’! (Apart from one or two lines clearly personalised for young Mr Beautiful.) She was so rarely given anything sufficiently intense.

I adore NG as an actor but that hasn’t stopped me missing Matt Smith - who is inexplicably My Doctor even though I’ve been watching since 1963. (Maybe with a little less attention for the first two or three years!) He could have carried off Episodes 1 & 2 of the new series with aplomb - and would have been very different to NG in Boom. He would have been sadder, even without tears.

And it will take a bit of time for Ruby to become someone I actively care about rather than someone I watch the Doctor caring about. (Still completely traumatised by ‘The Girl Who Waited’.)

Still, ‘Boom’ bodes well. Loving the developing snowy story arc! And intrigued by the Twist.

ladyflower23 · 20/05/2024 10:12

@KomproMatilda so intrigued by the Susan Twist thing! Not sure if anyone has already mentioned this but do we think there is a connection between Susan Twist and the "there's always a twist at the end" song at the end of episode 2? Or is that unlikely because Twist is the actual name of the actress not a character? I still can't accept there wasn't a purpose to that musical number. It was so weird and shoe horned in!

Matt Smith is also my Doctor. We've been watching all the old Doctor Who Confidentials on iPlayer and Matt actually seems like the Doctor in Real life as well. Love him!

Anyway thought Boom was a lot better than the first two. Liked the Doctor's speech about how he'd destroy the planet if he got blown up. Moffat's great at the rousing speeches.

Next week's episode looks good from the trailer.

First time I have been able to feel excited about Dr Who since Peter Capaldi left.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/05/2024 11:12

Matt Smith is also MY Doctor though it was Sylvester McCoy when I was a child. Haven't watched Boom yet but probably will today.

Hang on
”the girl who waited”

linked to he who waits?

Even though my era should be Tom baker I loved Matt smith’s doctor and the story arc.

KomproMatilda · 20/05/2024 12:27

🤷🏽‍♀️

Who knows?

ElleLeopine · 20/05/2024 12:50

Has anyone else picked up on the Dad thing? He made such a point of it being one Dad to another. And I'm sure it was mentioned by Ncuti before?

Does this mean that we are going to be introduced to one of his offspring in this series?

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 20/05/2024 12:52

Yes! I just watched it and thought They Are Making A Point That He's A Dad, in a way they haven't before. It was mentioned in Devils Chord too

SheilaFentiman · 20/05/2024 13:04

it was! And I feel like it was in the Xmas special too

TripleDaisySummer · 20/05/2024 13:06

They've mentioned pointedly several times he's a Dad and that he's a grandfather - so I suspect the twist stuff is to do with that - has got mentioned in previous series but very much more in passing.

There's speculation River Song is back as well - so child with her or Susan Dr granddaughter being back as she was mentioned in devil cord or some other child/descendent seems likely.

I hope not, I hated the river song story line

SheilaFentiman · 20/05/2024 16:31

i love river, but The Husbands of River Song was a send off of the kind companions don’t always get, so I would like that to be her last screen time.

<cough> poor Bill <cough>

BatshitCrazyWoman · 20/05/2024 20:10

Boom was so much better than the first two episodes. I'll continue watching. It felt like a proper Dr Who episode to me.

ABirdsEyeView · 21/05/2024 09:18

I could never see River Song being married to Matt Smith's doctor - it just looked all wrong, that didn't suit each other at all.

KomproMatilda · 21/05/2024 09:54

I thought they were perfect together. One has to accept that the broadcast episodes only dealt with various timey whimey adventures, rather than their private, romantic lives together - which we were effectively invited to imagine for ourselves. Or not.

More interestingly I know one or two young adults who say they only learnt about the possibility of such a relationship (in terms of apparent age difference) from watching Matt Smith era Dr Who. And that in fact the show normalised non-conventional partnerships for them.

I’d say that’s a win …

And I think part of the reason I’ve loved Matt Smith’s Doctor so much is his interactions with his companions. His first meeting with Amy - and what transpired for her because of it - is sheer perfection; the best of all the Doctor / companion stories. And then Rory. And the 2000 years, and the crack in the wall … Just. Epic.

SheilaFentiman · 21/05/2024 12:13

But look at the sweet married couple bickering in this Neil Gaiman extra...

This is a nice summary of how I feel about MS too. It was a great Dr Who time, imo.

Really enjoed this 3rd episode - so much better then the preceeding two. If it carries on like this, I'm in. But if it reverts back then I think I'll be giving it a miss. Sadly.

I thought the concept of meeting backwards in time was a great idea, ALbeit stolen directly from The Time Traveller's Wife.

Riversong herself was deeply annoying, and as far as I could see basically was a kind of Moffat fantasy trope.

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 22/05/2024 07:15

Moffat can be brilliant, but too much unchecked Moffat is annoying, overly complicated and a bit twee

Yes, I completely agree with this! The similarities between the two are obvious, though I have never minded, as I love both.

I don't agree that River is annoying, I found her character fascinating, and really enjoyed how her origin was revealed. I thought Let's Kill Hitler was an awesome episode!
