This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

I think these episodes had so much potential but it looked really cheap and the music was dire in ep2. There was so much excellent 60s music they could have used and instead it was like some really dodgy old musical.

Apparently its so there's no music rights problems in the future. Lots of series on netflix etc have the wrong music because they couldn't get the rights, and it doesn't work well unfortunately.

ABirdsEyeView · 15/05/2024 16:00

That makes sense @GoldViper but it was just so bad!

SoupDragon · 15/05/2024 16:13

Wasn't that the whole point though? The music was meant to be dire.

Yes where was the Beatles music

@TryingToSeeTheFunnySide we have watched all of them, in order. Also added in the lost ones they animated with the original sound, and the ones only with TeleSnaps. So seen everything possible!

That's impressive! I think a fair bit of stamina needed to watch them all 😊

The dance but at the end was also horrible - I thought that was meant to be when good music had been restored. I dunno - just thought something with a 60s feel would have fit the story better.

Ellmau · 16/05/2024 01:03

I like Ncuti and Millie, and I do really want to know what Ruby's back story is. (But mysterious foundling/adoptee stories are something that always does it for me, even if the resolution doesn't work. I'm one of the few that actually likes the Doctor's new origin story.)

The babies story was ridiculously unbelievable.

The 60s one had potential as a plot but I didn't like the acting of the Maestro - he came across pervy rather than classic Who villain. The singing was terrible; the episode had a lot of filler; and the song and dance at the end was pointless. I actually missed Shirley and Johannes and only knew they were on bc of comments online.

I think there was a definite attempt at relaunching the story - lots of explanations for new viewers of past events/people. The tone seemed more aimed at children than recent series have been.

I think the point of the bad music, and the winks at the camera, and the doctor talking about non diegetic music is that something has gone wrong with the universe.

The doctor and Donna let the toymaker through by going to the end of the universe in a previous episode and its fucked everything up.

If you’re doing this, I wouldn’t just watch them in order. I’d find out which serials are deemed “classics” and watch those, then work from there.

The biggest difference you’ll notice in the 60s episodes is pacing - they are much slower, as TV was back then. Personally I love them, but I can see why some modern viewers wouldn’t find them entertaining TV.

It’s a shame the first ever episode isn’t on the streaming service because I think it’s a real masterpiece of TV. Barely dated, a brilliant concise intro to the characters.

You can’t go wrong with most of Tom Baker’s first three seasons. “Robots of Death” if you want one recommendation.

Another "Let's save all space and time" thing then?

Seems very plausible. but I really wonder how the universe managed to survive at all, it seems every year there is a new threat to the fabric of space and time.

I wonder if that means musical numbers every episode?

God I hope not!

Treaclewell · 16/05/2024 17:33

I have known three people in education who were (two dead) capable of composing pretty good songs which have stuck in my brain over 50 years, so I think they could have found someone, while not up to Beatles standard, could have got them something better. In Wales, for goodness sake, they couldn't.

Surely that is the very point of Dr Who? Saving all space and time? Every effing week?

Binglebong · 16/05/2024 20:45

I dunno, i tend to enjoy it more when it's saving a few people. Doctor Who is very much "every individual matters" and i like that.

No, not really. A lot of time it was saving certain people, or a situation, or the Earth occasionally, or some alien race. The TARDIS was mainly a vehicle to allow them to arrive at all kinds of new adventures.

TryingToSeeTheFunnySide · 17/05/2024 11:09

Oh wow, amazing! Thank you! 😄

Damnyoureyessir · 18/05/2024 10:54

We have just watched episode 3 and I enjoyed it so much more. we immediately felt the difference between Steven Moffat and RTD. Felt like an old episode ❤️

KomproMatilda · 18/05/2024 11:01

It’s hard to get used to the fact they’ll all be available to stream before the TV broadcast. Stressful having to decide what to do!

But very glad to hear Boom lives up to expectations.

ladyflower23 · 18/05/2024 11:09

We're going to watch it when it's broadcast on BBC tonight. So excited for it!!! Have always loved everything Steve Moffat has written.

Macbeff · 18/05/2024 11:26

Steven Moffat is such a great writer, I can’t think of a duff episode written by him. “Blink” and “Heaven Sent” are the two stand out episodes from post-2005 Doctor Who, IMO.

Rummikub · 18/05/2024 11:41

Was blink the one with the weeping angels? Dd1 is still not over that!

Yes. Absolutely superb episode. I still think of it every time I see an angel in a churchyard etc.

Such a brilliant episode and the scarecrows was also excellent

Foggyfield · 18/05/2024 12:43

Just watched the third episode and it is like night and day between RTD and Moffat. THIS is Doctor Who.

Keeping my fingers crossed that RTD is 'retired' quickly and Moffat takes over, may be able to watch full time again then, as it stands now we will probably just tune in for his episodes (rather than enduring the pain and boredom of RTD's).

Insufferable characters quickly became brilliant with Moffats writing.
