This will be my 12th Doctor. I’m a big Doctor Who fan. Happy memories of Sat with my dad watching cyber men and darleks.
But what the hell has happened? I’ve just finished, well I managed 25 mins, before I couldn’t take it anymore the 1st episode with the new Doctor and sidekick. Awful acting with a ludicrous plot (yes I know it’s fantasy) but it’s never been this stupid. Can’t help but think the BBC aren’t bothered and think they can put out anything and we’ll watch. Russell T Davies should have his pens taken off him and spare us anymore pain.

I can’t be the only Doctor Who fan who thinks like this. Absolutely Gutted 😞

This is as late in the series as they could put the last 2 episodes as there are only 3 episodes left.
The final 2 are a double episode being shown in the cinema as well as on tv the same night.

I’ve just googled and it says 21 May?
Legend of Ruby Sunday
and can’t remember title of the other.

8misskitty8 · 02/06/2024 17:35

It’s In the odeon cinemas on the 21st June. At 11pm
Not sure about other cinema groups.

Legend of ruby Sunday and premiere of final episode - Empire of death.

Supersimkin2 · 02/06/2024 17:43

Hey ho, will watch Unleashed. Thanks!

ElleLeopine · 02/06/2024 18:48

The Legend of Ruby Sunday sounds like all will be revealed about her and her origins!

Off to search.

Yes the showing was 11pm. Wonder if the May was a typo.

Yes I get that rtd is probably seeing an opportunity now he has Ncuti.

Were there any sexism / stereotypes for Jodie’s Doctor?

Yes, there was - the episode where they tried to duck her as a witch.

GoodAfternoonGoodEveningAndGoodnight · 02/06/2024 19:54

Just watched, really enjoyed the episode but would have been good to know how the monsters got in?
As for the racism, could feel myself getting angry on the Drs behalf lol
I'd have been like "fine, bollocks to you, stay here and take your chances, you racist twat bags!"
Flicked the V and gone off in the TARDIS without them leaving them mouth flapping when it disappeared 😁

KomproMatilda · 02/06/2024 20:07

Millie Gibson did a great job of portraying just how utterly mortified Ruby felt at the end.

Are we thinking the Twist woman might be inextricably linked to, watching over, or even related to Ruby? (Not quite sure how her role as Ambulance fits!)

OccasionalHope · 02/06/2024 20:11

Being the mum in this episode makes me think she must be a villain of some kind.

BritishBeatleMania · 02/06/2024 20:34

@OccasionalHope shes certainly giving Madame Kovarian through the crack in the wall sort of vibes at times. But then at other times, like as the hiker, she seems nice. But she is all over and appearing everywhere so obviously ties in.

That's late! I'm not sure I'll be able to stay up till 1am if I took DS to the cinema.

@InMySpareTime

Ricky wasn't annoying though - he was thoughtful and intelligent. It was a genocide, the AI decided that extermination was better than picking and choosing.

And on the second point - well, I specialised in studying genocide at university, and mostly they're done pretty brutally when "efficiency" is possible. So I guess even an AI might get brutal, especially as it was driven by hate.

Did you not hear that song??

Lovely bloke, but if I lived inside Spotify and that was the most popular tune on the planet I'd be plotting to kill him before he made more.

Reviewers seem to be raving about Ncuti Gatwa’s closing minutes - but I found it a touch over-theatrical and disproportionate. Which is hardly surprising if those were the first Doctor Who scenes he filmed. (Not quite sure if RTD said first ever or first of proper new season? Can’t be bothered to check.)

Since the AI could kill in any way it wanted, I’m assuming it created (oh hell - were the monsters actually from the wild forest outside or created by the AI?) or allowed the monsters for its own entertainment.

I’m also assuming that at the time the AI became a threat on the Home Planet a decision was made to send the healthy young to a distant, safe place to preserve and continue the human race. But that wasn’t actually an escape - and the young people sent were so very inept it’s doubtful they’d have been able to procreate and bring up children without the AI doing everything anyway.

Given that RTD first pitched this idea during Steven Moffatt’s show runner era, I’m wondering how the ending would have been written for a different Doctor. Or - was the ending tacked on to (thats too derogatory but can’t think of better) and then seeded through a ready made story, just for this Doctor? That seems likely.

But I was right - the man is so beautiful, and the photography / editing people are having so much fun playing with colours and lighting and tears rolling down his face - they’re going to make him cry in every possible episode.

Edited

SO beautiful! Even the ‘tache cannot detract from his beauty.

Perhaps if you need to watch a companion programme from behind the scenes to understand what the story was trying to achieve, then the writing isn’t strong enough 🤷‍♀️

I don’t think there’s an issue with the writing.

it’s very common for people to tie themselves in knots insisting something isn’t racist. As some of these comments show. It’s not a lack of clarity on the part of a script writer that causes this.

InMySpareTime · 03/06/2024 08:36

I get that he was trying to make a point about racism, it's just that it wasn't all that clear.
Racism is definitely a human trait, but alien species aren't the best way to deliver that message. There's no logical reason for humans to discriminate based on skin colour and it would be strange for a totally different humanoid Civilization to do that too.
Several episodes feature alien races without skin tone variation but with no racial connotation.
The Ood, Sontarans and The Silents are all the same skin tone.
The Silurians are a variety of colours and have discriminatory features based on factors other than colour.

SoupDragon · 03/06/2024 09:52

It's hardly a leap to realise that another humanoid species might also have racism. If it's a human trait, it can be a trait for other species too where there are differences in appearance that can be discriminated against.

ABirdsEyeView · 03/06/2024 10:14

I think it would have been better to not have the green blood - for them to be fully human. It muddies the waters if the writer wants us to focus on the racism. In all other respects they were meant to be young vacuous humans with their focus on pop songs, fashion, crushes on celebrities. There was no value in making them alien imo.

I thought this one was good - the heartbreaking dawning realisation by the Dr and Ruby at the end, the cold ruthlessness of Lindy, the unexpected intelligence and kindness of Ricky.

thecatsthecats · 03/06/2024 12:13

I'm not sure that the green stuff was blood. It could easily be an ooze of giant sluggy saliva or poison.

Since there was literally nothing else to say that they weren't human, I'm going to assume that they were.

(Apart from Timelords, are there any other exactly human-like species shown in Who?)

There was an episode where people from UNIT assumed Graham was the Doctor.

And there were a few historic episodes about black and asian characters that addressed racism, in particular the episode 'Rosa' about Rosa Parks, written by Marjorie Blackman.

KomproMatilda · 03/06/2024 12:22

You know, I feel an unexpected wave of sadness when reminded of the egregious retconning that happened during the Jodie era. And now even this Doctor is lumbered with all that indescribable nonsense.

There was just no need …

Could not agree more!!

Just stop it! The time war was a great concept, stop fcuking about a gallifreyan stuff ever since!

thecatsthecats · 03/06/2024 12:37

The end of the 50th anniversary special was so exciting. "I've been heading home, the long way around."

Yay, the Doctor rescued Gallifrey after all and we'll have a new era of Timelord stories again!

Wait no, we did almost fuck all with it before destroying it offscreen again for the lols.

DramaLlamaBangBang · 03/06/2024 13:08

I don't think RTD is a consistently good Who writer. I think he has too many favourite topics and things he wants to shoehorn in over and above writingva good story. Steven Moffatt is far cleverer and can write a layered story that hs a moral or highlight issues in a far more effective way. Rtd also came up with some stupid childish stories even during the Tennant era ( the absorvaloff/ scribble monster) I think both he and David Tennant made a mistake having Tennant back. He should have concentrated on the new Doctor and introduced him properly and Tennant needs to know when it's time to move on.

Especially as Ncuti is an absolute gift of an actor. I loved the DT era but it should have ended when it ended.
