Ding Dong!

This is an odd assignment

Chrysanthemum5 · 17/04/2024 20:55

This makes no sense Finley was asked to tone down the look because she had a little bit of silver on the models eyes and then others had bright green flashes and were praised.

Theendisntnigh · 17/04/2024 20:59

I feel Finley was picked on unfairly. I also don't think he should have been in the bottom 2.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 17/04/2024 21:03

The guy with the upside down look was extremely arrogant about it. It was nowhere near the quality of the others

He was overweeningly arrogant! Plus - I can't see how he thought that it would work. In order to see the opposite face you would have had to turn the model upside down.

The one with the zebra ears didn't need the ears - the face spoke for itself.

The largely grey one with the colours in the centre - when the MUA started it I wasn't impressed, but by the end I thought it was lovely - I liked it better than the one that changed under a filter - I thought that was just gimmicky.

I didn't like Finley's looks but thought she was picked on. Others had put on more colour than that and hadn't been criticised for it. I also thought it was a stupid and pointless assignment - make-up that goes with trainers? 🙄

I was glad George was sent home just because he wasn't as good as his opinion of himself, but I think Finley will struggle - not coping well with the stress of the challenges. This is a very competitive industry, and you have to be tough.

Edit for autocarrot

DuchesseNemours · 18/04/2024 08:46

I've also really enjoyed past series but am finding it more frustrating then enjoyable these days.

I simply could not understand what the trainer assignment was really looking for - they basically just throw out buzz words and then complain when people cannot translate them into clear guidelines. They want a "pop" of colour but two red lines is "too bold". I mean, what the actual does that really mean?

I laughed when they basically slagged off everyone's looks during the judge's private conversation but then came out and told them they'd all done well. Someone should have done one of judges and their two-faces for the opposites round Grin

But I no longer can 'guess' the judging - it just seems so random to me that it no longer appears to be about talent in any way. They may as well roll a dice to decide who stays and goes (imo).

Theendisntnigh · 18/04/2024 08:50

Thin Red lines on the eye lid is too bold but chunky green ones under the eye is fine. It made no sense!

I found last week's lady gaga challenge insulting and her "message" with complete lack of personalisation or care rude. Between that and this week's challenge I'm reading it as advertising on the BBC by stealth.

Also the glitter lashes?! The contestants did them better than the judge!

Yep.

Plus - I think the general standard of talent is noticeably lower this series.

I wish we could have another series of the Irish Glow Up. I really enjoyed that and would like to see if it has kept its zing.

Theendisntnigh · 18/04/2024 08:54

It's just face painting not make up isn't it

Yeah. The faces are just bumpy canvas and completely unrelated to the paint that goes on them.

It's less Glow Up and more, turn your face into a Picasso wannabe.

Theendisntnigh · 18/04/2024 09:05

And the weak links to their sob stories... Zebra girl really wasn't feeling her link and I feel she wanted to say "I'm doing this because it's a good idea" but was forced into linking it back to her personality.

Emotionalsupportviper · 18/04/2024 09:10

I also got the feeling from a couple of the models (particularly in the trainer task) that they were fed up with the whole carry on (or perhaps with their particular make up artist, who knows). Maybe because there was next to nothing that could be done other than a bit of foundation (so they "didn't take the attention off the trainers") and it was boring sitting there for two hours with bugger all happening.

I'm sure that there are occasions where the models are fed up, or they look at the make-up and think "God Almighty! What has s/he done!", but they have never had the discourtesy to show it before.

I'm aware that I might have read them wrongly and be seeing things that aren't there - I'd appreciate other opinions on this.

Theendisntnigh · 18/04/2024 09:11

I agree and the model with the big white splodge and some scribbles on her face really looked like she wanted to be anywhere but there!

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 18/04/2024 09:13

It was a bit unprofessional of the model.

She was on a BBC TV assignment, good for her profile

I hate the background stories.

OK - we need a bit of it - "I live with my boyfriend and we have a cat", "I was brought up by my Nan because my mum was ill and couldn't cope. My nan has been my inspiration". "I found school hard because I was dyslexic/ have ASD, but it made me find creative ways to express myself", "I just love drawing and painting and colour and I found a way to turn it into a living"

That's all we need.

I don't want this angst-competitiveness and misery. I don't doubt many of them have it - we all do. There are things in my past that have affected my psyche/ set me down a road I wouldn't have taken otherwise - even things that keep me awake at night - but I don't inflict them on other people.

And I don't find it entertaining to hear other people's. It turns into a "My life is worse than your life." fest.

Cocolapew · 21/04/2024 16:47

Just caught up, the trainer assignment was ridiculous, agree with pp that the green was perfect but the red stripes weren't, makes no sense 🤷.
I find Finlay incredibly annoying.

AsphaltBeach · 21/04/2024 17:28

Not loving any of them either this season, and I agree it's turned into a kids face painting competition with dislikable, moaning MUA's who are pretty much all arrogant and pushing the stories of their 'journeys'.

I've not seen the Irish one, but on the back of whats been said here I think I might go and have a look.

MagPieWhyPie · 21/04/2024 23:22

The Irish one was really good. Keep looking for another series but doesn’t seem to have been made.

I wonder if the contestants themselves (some) get a bit fed up having to find some personal story or meaning behind their make up looks. Maybe they don’t have a trauma to share, maybe they were never bullied for having big ears, maybe they aren’t struggling with their identify, maybe they don’t have asd, adhd, fasd, xyz, maybe … just maybe (and hold on cos this is quite radical)…maybe they just like DOING MAKE UP and being creative. Maybe it’s as simple as that for some of them. This needing to pigeon hole everything gets so boring.

Agree with others re Findlay the silver wasn’t any bolder than lots of the other looks the “client” just didn’t like it. I think Dom and Val securely though the client was being annoying too with their request for it to be redone!

<SHOCKED GASP! 😧>

I think you could be right.

I don't know why making everyone "interesting" is thought to be good telly.

We've seen it on other shows, too - Bake-off, Sewing Bee, Pottery Throwdown etc - they start off being lovely and all about the craft, then they introduce a couple of "quirky" competitors (fine, as long as they can bake/ sew/ throw a pot) and then suddenly everybody is gay, trans, neurodivergent, foster-parent to 17 various children etc and it seems that the whole point of the programme gets lost.

People are intrinsically interesting. If someone applies and is good enough, it doesn't matter what their background is - they will make the show enjoyable, and people will warm to them (or not) because if their personalities, not because they tick a box.

Edit - usual reasons

DuchesseNemours · 22/04/2024 08:38

Also I watch these shows because I am interested about the craft itself. I want to know about makeup but they literally never tell you anything about it. Not once have they ever given a single tip or explaination, that I can recall.

It's infuriating and was the same problem with the jewellery making competition program. They may as well be doing anything at all, because they never really talk about technique and the judging always seems to entirely subjective.

Yes I liked the idea of the jewellery programme but it was another formulaic bake off programme which is a shame. These shows have the chance to show off crafts that are less well known.

fancyfrogs · 22/04/2024 08:55

Oh I forgot all about this! Off to catch up if I can today. I know nothing about makeup beyond making myself look barely presentable but I love this show!

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 22/04/2024 10:05

It’s my secret self indulgence. Love it. Not warming to many this year and the self diagnosing of issues…
I actually met the MUA from the Crown who was on Glow Up at a dinner party. Fan girled over her a bit. She loved it though s as she has never been recognised before. Has such a great chat. She said the winner that year was clearly so much better than the rest, which was interesting.

Ohh who was that?

bryceQ · 22/04/2024 15:32

I wish the judges and guests were a bit less contrived and weren't constantly doing American accents. But I like seeing the creativity. I think they should give them a bit more advice on the challenges they do with clients in the first round, it's outside the comfort zone for many of them.
